Researchers describe hardships experienced by abortion patients, examining administrative health cases from 2010 to 2015 in the United States. All patients received financial assistance from an abortion fund to help pay for abortion. Case data were analyzed to assess types and numbers of hardships experienced by age, race, and geographic origin. Hardships ranged from homelessness to parenting multiple children. Patients from the geographic South experienced the most hardships, followed by those from the Midwest. Hardships experienced by abortion fund patients are like those reported in other s

In Lao PDR, investment by the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria has played an important role in scaling up the response to HIV and tuberculosis (TB). As part of a series of case studies on how Global Fund-supported programmes interact with national health systems, we assessed the nature and extent of integration of the Global Fund portfolios within the national HIV and TB programmes, the integration of the HIV and TB programmes within the general health system, and system-wide effects of Global Fund support in Lao PDR. The study relied on a literature review and 35 interviews

A resilient health system necessitates strong governance, political commitment, effective administrative entities and inter-organisational collaboration. This paper examines India's current health policy landscape and explores the analytical and operational capacities required to establish a robust post-pandemic health system using the policy capacity framework described by Wu et al. (2015). We emphasised the need for a coordinated policy response to strengthen health information systems, health service management, human resource management and healthcare financing. Before World War II, Czechoslovakia was among the most developed European countries with an excellent health care system. After the Communist coup d'etat in 1948, the country was forced to adapt its existing health care system to the Soviet model. It was planned and managed by the government, financed by general tax money, operated in a highly centralized, bureaucratic fashion, and provided service at no direct charge at the time of service. In recent years, the health care system had been deteriorating as the health of the people had also been declining. Life expectancy, infant mortality rate

Supporting functional ability in everyday life is essential for advancing toward universal health coverage (UHC). However, of the estimated 2.5 billion people in need of assistive technology (AT) globally, the vast majority do not have access. The main reason for this is financial barriers, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. This study aims to identify financing policy options for increasing access to affordable AT. The UHC concept, more specifically the three coverage dimensions-population, interventions (products and services), and costs, is used to descriptively analyze gaps

Social norms, institutional weaknesses, and gaps between policy commitments and implementation in Malawi continue to pose significant barriers to adolescents' realisation of their sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR). Early marriage, gender-based violence, and limited access to contraception and comprehensive sexuality education (CSE) undermine adolescents' wellbeing and future opportunities. This qualitative study examines how actor interests, institutional arrangements, and normative contexts shape the delivery of and access to adolescent-friendly health and education services in

BACKGROUND: To lessen the burden of cervical cancer, Nigeria introduced the HPV vaccine to its national immunization program, but the program has faced operational and contextual problems during its early rollout. This study explored the systemic and community-level barriers affecting HPV vaccine delivery across selected Nigerian states.
METHOD: This exploratory qualitative study employed key informant interviews with policymakers, immunization officers, government agencies, community-based organizations, and implementing partners across three states: Kaduna, Kano, and Lagos, from April 2025

The COVID-19 pandemic triggered an economic shock just ten years after the shock of the 2008 global financial crisis. Economic shocks are a challenge for health systems because they reduce government revenue at the same time as they increase the need for publicly financed health care. This article explores the resilience of health financing policy to economic shocks by reviewing policy responses to the financial crisis and COVID-19 in Europe. It finds that some health systems were weakened by responses to the 2008 crisis. Responses to the pandemic show evidence of lessons learnt from the earli

At the 2026 World Economic Forum (WEF) Annual Meeting in Davos, health was positioned as central to economic resilience, productivity, and geopolitical stability. Four themes dominated the global health agenda: artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled health systems, investible health system resilience, women's health as an economic investment opportunity, and mental health as a macroeconomic priority. While these agendas reflect important global concerns, they are being advanced during a period characterised by shrinking development assistance, fiscal stress, debt pressures, and uneven institutio

BACKGROUND: Health system resilience is often described through the World Health Organization building blocks, yet in protracted crises it depends on whether governance, financing, workforce, information systems, service delivery, and accountability can convert crisis response into institutional reform.
OBJECTIVE(S): This study examines how far Yemen's health system responses to prolonged conflict, economic decline, disease outbreaks, and COVID-19 progressed beyond absorptive and adaptive resilience toward transformative resilience, and how strategic health policy across the building blocks s

BACKGROUND: As the core providers of medical and health services, public hospitals play an irreplaceable role in ensuring basic medical care, safeguarding health equity, and fulfilling social responsibilities. Their operational efficiency and institutional design not only influence the national health status but also relate to the stability and development of the entire healthcare system. Therefore, continuously optimizing support policies and management mechanisms for public hospitals has become a crucial issue for governments worldwide in advancing healthcare system reforms.

To determine if the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (PEI) affected financing of routine immunization programmes, we compared sources and uses of funds for routine immunization programmes and PEI activities in Bangladesh, C te d'Ivoire, and Morocco for the years 1993-98. We also examined funding trends for these years in these countries and assessed the effect of the initiative on the availability of specific resources in national immunization programmes, such as cold-chain equipment and personnel time spent on activities related to national immunization days and surveillance of poliomyelit

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated: (i) changes in the incidence of acute otitis media (AOM) following introduction of public funding for free inoculation with 7- and 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCV7 and PCV13, respectively) and (ii) changes in the rate of myringotomies for AOM (MyfA) in children 1year following the publication of the first edition of the clinical practice guidelines for the diagnosis and management of AOM in children in Japan.
METHODS: PCV7 was launched on the Japanese market in 2010 and gained public funding in 2011. PCV7 was replaced with PCV13 in November 2

INTRODUCTION: The transition of voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC), an HIV prevention service, in Zimbabwe from a donor-funded to a government-owned programme involves the collective efforts and alignment of national and subnational government leaders, managers, healthcare providers, village health workers, community members, donors and implementing partners. We sought to understand stakeholders' perspectives on barriers, facilitators and recommendations as a vertical HIV prevention programme transitioned to an integrated, government-led model.
METHODS: We conducted 54 semistructured
