Riemerella anatipestifer is a Gram-negative, rod-shaped bacterium that is flagellated, non-budded, and encapsulated, measuring approximately 0.4 μm × 0.7 μm. After infecting ducklings with R. anatipestifer, the hosts exhibited pathological changes, such as bacterial meningitis, fibrinous pericarditis, and fibrinous peripheral hepatitis. The pathogenesis of meningitis caused by R. anatipestifer has not yet been elucidated. To investigate the key molecules or proteins involved in R. anatipestifer's penetration of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and the subsequent development of duck meningitis, a

Myroides spp. are rare opportunistic pathogens, but they can be life-threatening because of their multidrug-resistant drug properties and their potential to cause outbreaks, especially in immunosuppressed patients. In this study, 33 isolates isolated from intensive care patients with urinary tract infections were examined for drug susceptibility. All isolates except three proved to be resistant to the tested conventional antibiotics. The effects of ceragenins, a class of compounds developed to mimic endogenous antimicrobial peptides, were evaluated against these organisms. The MIC values of ni

Bacterial coldwater disease (BCWD), caused by Flavobacterium psychrophilum, results in significant losses among multiple salmonid (family Salmonidae) species. Molecular epidemiology and serotyping studies have suggested that some variants are host specific; however, these associations have not been evaluated by cross-challenging fish species with putatively host-associated F. psychrophilum isolates via more natural (i.e. immersion) exposure routes. To this end, F. psychrophilum isolates US19-COS, US62-ATS and US87-RBT, each originally recovered from diseased coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch),

A 20-year-old female mute swan (Cygnus olor) originally in a flock of free-living swans on a Long Island, New York, lake, was presented for facial swelling and decreased appetite. An adult male ring-billed gull (Larus delawarensis) was also presented to the same wildlife rescue center for bilateral lameness of 1-week duration. Once referred for veterinary evaluation and care, both species were diagnosed with septic arthritis and osteomyelitis caused by Chryseobacterium indologenes and treated with orbifloxacin until complete recovery. Chryseobacterium indologenes is infrequently diagnosed as a

We report a case of cerebral vasculitis in a 31-year-old woman who presented with chronic kidney disease stage 5, labile hypertension and severe headaches. The diagnosis of cerebral vasculitis made on magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) and late diagnosis of polyarteritis nodosa were made by conventional CT angiography. Immunosuppression was complicated by recurrent septicaemia due to Elizabethkingia meningoseptica Treatment of the vasculitis resulted in marked improvement of MRA appearances, headaches and anxiety and stabilisation of blood pressure. The septicaemia required parenteral quinol

Riemerella anatipestifer (RA) infections cause major economic losses in the duck industry. In this study, we developed an RA vaccine to control virulent serotype 1 and 2 RA, which predominate in worldwide prevalence. We established a strategy for vaccine candidate screening, and selected strains D15-RDA-92 (serotype 1) and D14-RDA-8 (serotype 2). These strains were characterized by ≤50% embryo mortality and <3.0 serum resistance assay values in in vitro screening. We evaluated the protective efficacy of live bivalent RA vaccines against virulent homologous serotype RA. Ducklings received two o

Riemerella anatipestifer (RA) is a widely distributed bacterial pathogen of birds responsible for remarkable losses to poultry production, especially among waterfowl. We characterized the genomic diversity of 166 field isolates of RA, collected from geese and ducks, using enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus (ERIC)-polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The field strains and five reference strains showed 17 distinct patterns consisting of five to 12 bands ranging from approximately 150-1800bp. The majority of the strains belonged to two closely related ERIC-PCR types (A and B), while the

BACKGROUND: We report for the first time a case of community acquired Chryseobacterium indologenes soft tissue infection in an immunocompetent patient.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 11 year female child, from South-Asia of Indian origin presented with fever, pain and swelling in right leg for 3 days with no significant past history. Incision and drainage was done and pus was sent for culture and sensitivity. Radiological investigation showed subtle irregular soft tissue density. Pus culture grew multidrug resistant C. indologenes.
CONCLUSION: Though of low pathogenicity, our case emphasises its unpre

The freshwater trematode Nanophyetus salmincola has been demonstrated to impair salmonid immune function and resistance to the marine pathogen Vibrio anguillarum, potentially resulting in ocean mortality. We examined whether infection by the parasite N. salmincola similarly increases mortality of juvenile Chinook Salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha when they are exposed to the freshwater pathogens Flavobacterium columnare or Aeromonas salmonicida, two bacteria that juvenile salmonids might encounter during their migration to the marine environment. We used a two-part experimental design where juve

OBJECTIVE: To present a case of bacterial keratitis caused by Elizabethkingia meningosepticum in an eye after trauma.
METHOD: Case report.
RESULT: A 45-year-old woman was referred to our cornea clinic for keratitis, which had developed following nonpenetrating eye trauma from a tree branch. Cultures from a corneal smear demonstrated heavy growth of E. meningosepticum. Treatment with a combination of topical moxifloxacin and topical trimethoprim/polymyxin B effectively controlled the corneal ulcer. Corneal infection resolved within 2 months, but a central corneal scar and vascularization rema

Bacterial meningitis is a major cause of morbidity and mortality. Despite advances in antimicrobial chemotherapy, the disease remains detrimental to humans, livestock, and poultry. Riemerella anatipestifer is a gram-negative bacterium causing duckling serositis and meningitis. However, the virulence factors contributing to its binding and invasion of duck brain microvascular endothelial cells (DBMECs) and penetration of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) have never been reported. In this study, immortalized DBMECs were successfully generated and used as an in vitro-model of duck BBB. Furthermore, o

In salmonids, stress responses increase cortisol levels and disease susceptibility, including to Flavobacterium psychrophilum (Fp), the causative agent of BCWD. A BCWD-resistant line (R-line) of rainbow trout was used here to investigate potential differences in immunoglobulin response after a combined treatment of cortisol and Fp, as compared to a susceptible (S-line) control line. Expression of membrane and secreted immunoglobulin heavy chains mu and tau were determined by RT-qPCR in spleen and anterior kidney. Cortisol treatment did not affect B cell development in the anterior kidney, but

Elizabethkingia meningoseptica is an opportunistic pathogen with a high mortality and an increasing incidence in the intensive care units. We present a 4-year-old patient with a history of atresia of the biliary tract and a liver transplant at 11 months of age, who was admitted for acute respiratory infection with hypoxemia. During the hospitalization, she required mechanical ventilation. Due to persistent fever and hypoxemia, mini bronchoalveolar lavage was performed with a positive culture for Elizabethkingia meningoseptica. She received vancomycin, trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole and ciproflo

BACKGROUND: Heterotrophic microbes in the Southern Ocean are challenged by the double constraint of low concentrations of organic carbon (C) and iron (Fe). These essential elements are tightly coupled in cellular processes; however, the prokaryotic requirements of C and Fe under varying environmental settings remain poorly studied. Here, we used a combination of metatranscriptomics and metaproteomics to identify prokaryotic membrane transporters for organic substrates and Fe in naturally iron-fertilized and high-nutrient, low-chlorophyll waters of the Southern Ocean during spring and late summ

Riemerella anatipestifer (RA) causes infectious serositis in poultry, leading to high mortality. ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters participate in diverse biological processes, but the role of the ABC transporter YbiT in RA remains unclear. Using the goose-derived RA strain CL-1 as the wild-type strain, we constructed a ybiT deletion mutant to investigate its biological functions and pathogenicity. Deletion of ybiT significantly impaired the growth of RA in TSB. Growth assays using DIP (2,2'-Dipyridyl) and various metal ions suggested a potential role for YbiT in Fe²⁺ transport. The mutan

Flavobacterium columnare is an important pathogen causing columnaris disease, which can result in high mortality in freshwater fish worldwide. Understanding the immune response in infection status of fish may be essential for developing effective prevention and treatment strategies. In this study, transcriptomes of liver and head kidney tissues in grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) were compared under symptomatic and asymptomatic statuses following the immersion infection of F. columnare. Significant differences in expression of genes were observed between fish showing disease symptoms and t

Zinc (Zn2+) is essential for all bacteria, but excessive Zn2+ levels are toxic. Bacteria maintain zinc homeostasis through regulators, such as Zur, AdcR, and ZntR. Riemerella anatipestifer is a significant Flavobacteriales pathogen causing acute serositis in ducks and other birds. In this study, we identified a homolog of ZntR, a regulator for zinc homeostasis, and demonstrated its contribution to the pathogenicity of R. anatipestifer. Deletion of zntR makes the bacteria hypersensitive to excess Zn2+ but not to other metals like manganese (Mn2+), copper (Cu2+), cobalt (Co2+), and nickel (Ni2+)

Antibiotic resistance has become a global public health problem, which is closely related to humans, animals and the environment. Riemerella anatipestifer (R. anatipestifer, RA) is a Gram-negative, multi-resistant bacterium that infects ducks and other birds. However, the mechanisms underlying R. anatipestifer's resistance to antibiotics aren't fully to be understood. Here, we show that the R. anatipestifer dnaK-deficient strain (∆dnaK) is more sensitive than the wild type to various tested antibacterial agents. DnaK is important for alleviating oxidative stress damage, which has been shown to
