(1): Rift Valley Fever (RVF) is a zoonotic disease of significant international health concern and considered as an emerging risk to Europe, where no RVF outbreaks in humans or animals have been reported so far. (2): Using a stochastic approach, we estimated the risk of RVF virus (RVFV) introduction during the period of May to October (the period when mosquito populations, including RVFV potential vectors, are present in European countries), into previously unaffected areas (e.g., United Kingdom, UK) via virus-carrying vectors traveling in commercial aircraft from RVF-affected countries (e.g.,

BACKGROUND: Pilots often face and need to overcome a diverse range of unfavorable conditions, of which hypoxic exposure is the most common. Studies have reported that hypoxia can induce a decrease in cerebral blood flow (CBF) in the brains of both humans and animals. Hypoxia and the associated cerebral hemodynamic changes can contribute to cognitive performance deficits that may endanger flight safety and increase the risk of accidents.
AIM: In this study, we aimed to identify region-specific alterations in CBF in male pilots after exposure to hypoxia.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We used 3D pseudo

Changes in flight direction in flying insects are largely due to roll, yaw and pitch rotations of their body. Head orientation is stabilized for most of the time by counter rotation. Here, we use high-speed video to analyse head- and body-movements of the bumblebee Bombus terrestris while approaching and departing from a food source located between three landmarks in an indoor flight-arena. The flight paths consist of almost straight flight segments that are interspersed with rapid turns. These short and fast yaw turns ("saccades") are usually accompanied by even faster head yaw turns that cha

In some wilderness areas, wildlife encounter vehicles disrupt their behaviour and habitat use. Changing driver behaviour has been proposed where bans on vehicle use are politically unpalatable, but the efficacy of vehicle setbacks and reduced speeds remains largely untested. We characterised bird-vehicle encounters in terms of driver behaviour and the disturbance caused to birds, and tested whether spatial buffers or lower speeds reduced bird escape responses on open beaches. Focal observations showed that: i) most drivers did not create sizeable buffers between their vehicles and birds; ii) b

The origin and early diversification of birds remain highly debated in vertebrate evolution. Although estimates of the evolutionary timescales suggest a Jurassic period radiation1,2, a profound scarcity of fossils from this period has hampered how the distinctive bird bauplan was assembled3-5. Selection for powered flight has been viewed as the primary driver of early avialan skeletal modifications3,6,7, attesting to the independent occurrences of aerodynamic features among paravian lineages8. Here we report on the discovery of a Late Jurassic avialan, Yuezhuornis yangyuanensis, gen. et sp. no

Power required to fly for a bird generally follows a U-shaped function of airspeed, with higher cost at both low and high speeds. Because power required increases with body mass faster than power available from flight muscles, larger birds may experience restricted flight speed ranges and climbing capabilities. Previous studies found limited flight performance in cormorants. Adapted for both flight and sub-surface swimming, they trade off larger flight muscles for powerful leg muscles used for diving. Our study tested whether the flight performance of greater cormorants is constrained by measu

Flying endothermic insects thermoregulate, likely to improve flight performance. Males of the Sonoran Desert bee, Centris caesalpiniae, seek females at aggregations beginning at sunrise and cease flight near midday when the air temperature peaks. To identify the thermoregulatory mechanisms for C. caesalpiniae males, we measured tagma temperature, wingbeat frequency, water loss rate, metabolic rate and tagma mass of flying bees across shaded air temperatures of 19-38°C. Surface area, wet mass and dry mass declined with air temperature, suggesting that individual bees do not persist for the enti

The growing availability of virtual cranial endocasts of extinct and extant vertebrates has fueled the quest for endocranial characters that discriminate between phylogenetic groups and resolve their neural significances. We used geometric morphometrics to compare a phylogenetically and ecologically comprehensive data set of archosaurian endocasts along the deep evolutionary history of modern birds and found that this lineage experienced progressive elevation of encephalisation through several chapters of increased endocranial doming that we demonstrate to result from progenetic developments.

BACKGROUND: Predation is one of the most important natural selection forces. Prey species can optimize feeding behavior and escape from predators based on mobility conditioned by body proportions. With age, mobility capacity increases and individuals are more efficient in finding resources and safety (e.g., food and refuge). Birds' mobility is driven by the dimensions, of the head and torso, as well as the extremities and flight feathers. To assess the relationship between body traits and to understand how body proportions are organized in wild Red-legged partridges (Alectoris rufa), we used b

Bumblebees tend to face their nest over a limited range of compass directions when learning the nest's location on departure and finding it on their approach after foraging. They thus obtain similar views of the nest and its surroundings on their learning and return flights. How do bees coordinate their flights relative to nest-based and compass-based reference frames to get such similar views? We show, first, that learning and return flights contain straight segments that are directed along particular compass bearings, which are independent of the orientation of a bee's body. Bees are thus fr

Autophagy is a catabolic process that provides cells with energy and molecular building blocks during nutritional stress. Autophagy also removes misfolded proteins and damaged organelles, a critical mechanism for cellular repair. Earlier work demonstrated that heparan sulfate proteoglycans, an abundant class of carbohydrate-modified proteins found on cell surfaces and in the extracellular matrix, suppress basal levels of autophagy in several cell types during development in Drosophila melanogaster In studies reported here, we examined the capacity of heparan sulfate synthesis to influence even

BACKGROUND: Mental mechanisms have evolved to enable animals (and humans) to be able to function in various social roles. It is suggested that the nature and functions of the mental mechanisms that enable animals to act as a hostile-dominant or threatened-subordinate can be distinguished. It is further suggested these can be internally activated and 'play off' against each other, such that a person 'attacks' themselves and then responds to their own internal attacks with subordinate defences. Hence, a depressed person can submit, feel defeated, belittled, beaten down, or want to run away (esca

Malignancy is considered to be a particular risk associated with exposure to the types of ionizing radiation encountered during extended space flight. In the present study, two dietary preparations were evaluated for their ability to prevent carcinogenesis in CBA mice exposed to different forms of space radiation: protons and highly energetic heavy particles (HZE particles). One preparation contained a mixture of antioxidant agents. The other contained the soybean-derived Bowman-Birk protease inhibitor (BBI), used in the form of BBI Concentrate (BBIC). The major finding was that there was a re

It remains unknown whether dairy cows with more reactive temperament produce more enteric methane (CH4) and are less bioenergetically efficient than the calmer ones. The objectives of this study were (a) to evaluate the relationship between cattle temperament assessed by traditionally used tests with energetic metabolism and enteric CH4 emissions by crossbred dairy cows; (b) to assess how cows' restlessness in respiration chambers affects energetic metabolism and enteric CH4 emissions. Temperament indicators were evaluated for 28 primiparous F1 Holstein-Gyr cows tested singly in the handling c

BACKGROUND: Pasteurella multocida meningitis in an immunocompetent patient is rare and commonly occurs after animal bite. To our knowledge, only 48 cases have been reported in the literature since 1989. P. multocida meningitis is commonly linked to animal contagion. Here we report on a new case of P. multocida meningitis in an immunocompetent patient who is a dog owner without a dog bite. We used the matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization-time of flight (MALDI-TOF) mass spectrometry to investigate the clonal lineage between animal and human isolates.

Behavioural displays are a common feature of animal courtship. Just as female preferences can generate exaggerated male ornaments, female preferences for dynamic behaviours may cause males to perform courtship displays near intrinsic performance limits. I provide an example of an extreme display, the courtship dive of Anna's hummingbird (Calypte anna). Diving male Anna's hummingbirds were filmed with a combination of high-speed and conventional video cameras. After powering the initial stage of the dive by flapping, males folded their wings by their sides, at which point they reached an averag

Spaceflight presents unique gravitational, radiation, and isolation hazards for human exploration of the Moon, Mars, and beyond, yet its impact on the female reproductive system and successive generations has been largely unassessed. In the NASA Rodent Research 20 mission, we examined the impact of a 42-d spaceflight on the female reproductive axis including ovulatory capacity, implantation rate, and fecundity as well as behavioral, metabolic, and functional outcomes in F1 and F2 offspring. Females bred 5 d after return to Earth became pregnant but only exhibited a slight decline in fecundity

Microbiome-integrated Caenorhabditis elegans cultivation methods enable investigation of host-microbiome interactions in the context of space-relevant stresses using three key innovations: introduction of live bacterial communities replacing chemically defined media, implementation of auxin-inducible degradation systems to prevent progeny production, and development of complementary hardware platforms. Polyethylene bags provide gas-permeable cultivation environments for large populations with complex microbiomes supporting downstream molecular analyses, while NemaCapsules with micropillar arra

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review synthesizes evidence from diverse experimental platforms and proposes the Osteocyte Mechanobiology Unit (OMU), a conceptual framework integrating the mechanical and biochemical processes underlying microgravity-induced alterations in osteocytes and their surrounding microenvironment.
RECENT FINDINGS: Current evidence indicates that microgravity disrupts two interconnected OMU domains: the Mechanical Sensing Domain, through alterations in the local mechanical microenvironment and mechanosensory structures, and the Biochemical Signaling Domain, through dysregulate

Crewed interplanetary return missions that are on the planning horizon will take years, more than enough time for initiation and completion of a pregnancy. Pregnancy is viewed as a sequence of processes - fertilization, blastocyst formation, implantation, gastrulation, placentation, organogenesis, gross morphogenesis, birth and neonatal development - each of which needs to be completed successfully, and each of which has a probability of success. The effects of the environment of interplanetary flight - microgravity and galactic cosmic rays (GCR) - on these probabilities are inferred from Eart
