BK-SWMM flood simulation framework is being proposed for urban storm flood modeling based on uncertainty parameter crowdsourcing data from a single functional region.

In recent years, urban flood disasters caused by sudden heavy rains have become increasingly severe, posing a serious threat to urban public infrastructure and the life and property safety of residents. Rapid simulation and prediction of urban rain-flood events can provide timely decision-making reference for urban flood control and disaster reduction. The complex and arduous calibration process of urban rain-flood models has been identified as a major obstacle affecting the efficiency and accuracy of simulation and prediction. This study proposes a multi-scale urban rain-flood model rapid con

Outpatient opioid dispensing during the 2024 floods in Southern Brazil: a population-based ecological time-series analysis.

BACKGROUND: Climate-related disasters can disrupt health-care delivery and treatment continuity. Evidence on their effects on opioid dispensing in middle-income countries remains scarce. We assessed whether the May 2024 floods were associated with changes in outpatient opioid dispensing in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective ecological time-series study using official Brazilian Ministry of Health data on codeine, morphine, and methadone dispensations from 2015 to 2025. Monthly rates per 10,000 inhabitants were modelled with quadratic secular and seasonal terms, mo

Respond to urban floods and groundwater depletion: A managed aquifer recharge approach to alleviate urban water challenges.

Climate change, rapid urbanization and increasing impervious surfaces influence urban flooding and groundwater depletion in developing cities, leading to chronic water scarcity and posing a severe threat to urban water security. These challenges can be addressed through integrated water management strategies that enhance infiltration and aquifer recharge. This study evaluates the application of Aquifer Storage Transfer and Recovery (ASTR) as a Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR) approach by repurposing 23 abandoned wells to inject stormwater during peak rainfall events. A 5-year, 6-h design storm,

Revealing the mobilization and age of estuarine dissolved organic matter during floods using radiocarbon and molecular fingerprints.

Estuaries significantly affect the transport of dissolved organic matter (DOM) from land to ocean. While the transport and composition of estuarine DOM have been extensively studied, the direct link between DOM chemistry and its age remains unclear, limiting a comprehensive understanding of the dynamics and fate of estuarine DOM under severe conditions (e.g., floods). This study applied radiocarbon and ultrahigh-resolution mass spectrometry analysis to investigate the correlation between DOM chemistry and apparent radiocarbon age of 102 samples collected from the Yangtze River Estuary during b

The 2016 Severe Floods and Incidence of Hemorrhagic Fever With Renal Syndrome in the Yangtze River Basin.

IMPORTANCE: Hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS), a neglected zoonotic disease, has received only short-term attention in postflood prevention and control initiatives, possibly because of a lack of evidence regarding the long-term association of flooding with HFRS. OBJECTIVES: To quantify the association between severe floods and long-term incidence of HFRS in the Yangtze River basin and to examine the modifying role of geographical factors in this association. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cross-sectional study collected data on HFRS cases between July 1, 2013, and June 30

First-order assessment of flood vulnerability in the Chignecto Isthmus, Atlantic Canada.

The Chignecto Isthmus is the sole land connection between Nova Scotia and mainland Canada, supporting national trade, agriculture and transportation. Much of this low-lying corridor is protected by aging dikes that are increasingly vulnerable to compound flooding from tides, storm surges and sea-level rise. This study combines static flood modeling and GIS-based land use classification to evaluate the elevation-based flood exposure of infrastructure and agricultural land. A planar water surface modeling approach validated with differential GPS measurements was applied to a 1-m-resolution digit

Research on Low-Damage CO2 Foam Flooding System: Review and Outlook.

Tight oil reservoirs are widely recognized as a critical successor in global unconventional energy development and are generally characterized by distinct geological features, including fine pore throats, pronounced heterogeneity, and a high concentration of clay minerals (e.g., montmorillonite and mixed-layer illite/smectite). Severe hydration, swelling, and fines migration are readily induced during water injection or conventional water-based fluid operations, thereby resulting in irreversible impairment of reservoir permeability. Despite the excellent injectivity and capacity for viscosity

Flood risk to population in Italy: a synoptic overview based on fatality data.

Floods continue to pose a threat to human life despite the major advances in managing flood risk. To quantitatively assess potential loss of life, we present a statistical approach to model societal flood risk from sparse, point information on fatal floods in Italy. At this end, the Zipf distribution and its parameters were estimated over a regular grid covering the national territory. Despite the difficulties in modelling sparse data, we tested the approach using a detailed record of 667 fatal floods at 652 different sites for 345 major or minor meteorological events during the 78-year period

Impact of flooding events on waterborne and vector-borne infections: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Flooding from natural disasters has become increasingly common worldwide, increasing the risk of infectious disease transmission, particularly waterborne and vector-borne infections. Although many studies report outbreaks following floods, the evidence remains fragmented across regions and pathogens. A comprehensive review is needed to clarify these associations and inform effective prevention and response strategies. METHODS: A systematic search of PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Library was conducted between November 2024 and January 2025, identifying studies published from Jan

Limited long-term cooling effects of Pangaean flood basalt weathering.

The emplacement of large igneous provinces (LIPs) is known to be a driver of climate change in Earth's past. However, the balance of climate warming through CO2 emission and cooling through weathering is poorly understood. To better understand the role of LIP emplacement on long-term climate change, here we utilize the SCION coupled climate-biogeochemical model which considers the impact of LIPs through degassing of CO2 and enhancement of local continental weathering rates. This approach results in better correspondence between the modelled output and proxy reconstructions of the period (espec

Numerical modelling of the impact of drainage system clogging on urban flood processes.

Drainage systems are an important infrastructure for reducing the degree of urban flooding, and clogging of street inlets or pipes is one of the important factors to influence the urban drainage capacity. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate the effect of drainage system clogging on urban flood processes. This study proposed a coupled 1D/2D hydrodynamic model to comprehensively analyze the response mechanisms of urban flooding to varying degrees and locations of drainage system clogging. First, the hydrodynamic model was constructed by integrating the 1D pipe network module of Storm Water
