Development differs between independently evolved staminode whorls in the same flower.

PREMISE: Staminodes are commonly studied in hermaphroditic flowers, in which a fraction of the androecium evolves into infertile structures, but few studies have addressed the evolution of staminodes as they occur through the loss of stamen function in carpellate flowers. Plants of Paronychia (Caryophyllaceae) are monoecious with hermaphroditic flowers with one staminodial whorl, except for the dioecious P. chartacea and P. minima. Dioecious species have carpellate flowers that evolved an additional whorl of staminodes, providing an exceptional opportunity to study a second origin of staminode…

Flower-like Thiourea-Formaldehyde Resin Microspheres for the Adsorption of Silver Ions.

Around a quarter of annual worldwide silver consumption comes from recycling. It remains a primary target for researchers to increase the silver ion adsorption capacity of the chelate resin. Herein, a series of flower-like thiourea-formaldehyde microspheres (FTFM) possessing diameters of 15-20 μm were prepared via a one-step reaction under acidic conditions, and the effects of the monomer molar ratio and reaction time on the micro-flower morphology, specific surface area, and silver ion adsorption performance were explored. The nanoflower-like microstructure showed the maximum specific surface

Altering potato isoprenoid metabolism increases biomass and induces early flowering.

Isoprenoids constitute the largest class of plant natural products and have diverse biological functions including in plant growth and development. In potato (Solanum tuberosum), the regulatory mechanism underlying the biosynthesis of isoprenoids through the mevalonate pathway is unclear. We assessed the role of 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-CoA reductase (HMGR) homologs in potato development and in the metabolic regulation of isoprenoid biosynthesis by generating transgenic lines with down-regulated expression (RNAi-hmgr) or overexpression (OE) of one (StHMGR1 or StHMGR3) or two genes, HMGR and

Biosynthesis of flower-shaped Au nanoclusters with EGCG and their application for drug delivery.

BACKGROUND: In the last decade, the biosynthesis of metal nanoparticles using organisms have received more and more considerations. However, the complex composition of organisms adds up to a great barrier for the characterization of biomolecules involved in the synthesis process and their biological mechanisms. RESULTS: In this research, we biosynthesized a kind of flower-shaped Au nanoclusters (Au NCs) using one definite component-epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), which was the main biomolecules of green tea polyphenols. Possessing good stability for 6 weeks and a size of 50 nm, the Au NCs mi

Assessing degree of flowering implicates multiple Chenopodiaceae/Amaranthaceae species in allergy.

BACKGROUND: IgE-mediated sensitization to the Chenopodiaceae/Amaranthaceae families is a cause of allergic symptoms in arid areas. Salsola kali and Chenopodium album are considered the main species responsible; however, there is a discrepancy between the pollination period of these two plants and clinical symptoms. The objectives of this study were to identify new Chenopodiaceae/Amaranthaceae members with sensitization capacity and to correlate symptoms, pollen counts and degree of flowering of different species. METHODS: A total of 37 individuals monosensitized to S. kali and C. album were i

Cellular localization of ROS and NO in olive reproductive tissues during flower development.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies have shown that reactive oxygen species (ROS) and nitric oxide (NO) are involved in the signalling processes taking place during the interactions pollen-pistil in several plants. The olive tree (Olea europaea L.) is an important crop in Mediterranean countries. It is a dicotyledonous species, with a certain level of self-incompatibility, fertilisation preferentially allogamous, and with an incompatibility system of the gametophytic type not well determined yet. The purpose of the present study was to determine whether relevant ROS and NO are present in the stigmatic

Antinociceptive and gastroprotective effects of diterpenes from the flower buds of Egletes viscosa.

Centipedic acid and 12-acetoxy-hawtriwaic acid lactone, diterpenes isolated from the flower buds of Egletes viscosa (Asteraceae) were assayed for antinociceptive and gastroprotective activities in animal models of nociception and gastric ulcer. In the chemical nociception induced in mice by intraperitoneal acetic acid and subplantar formalin injections, both diterpenes (25 and 50 mg/kg, p. o.) exerted potent antinociception in a manner similar to indomethacin (5 mg/kg, p. o.). In the formalin test, only the late phase nociceptive response (20 - 25 min) and not the early phase response (0 - 5 m

Cytokinin regulates flowering time in Arabidopsis thaliana through the gibberellin pathway.

Cytokinin and gibberellin are two plant hormones promoting flowering in Arabidopsis thaliana grown under short-day conditions. The activities of both hormones depend on similar signaling components, including several elements of the age pathway. However, to date, the interaction between cytokinin and gibberellin in regulating the transition to flowering remains unknown. In this work, we show that exogenous treatment of late-flowering or non-flowering cytokinin mutants by gibberellin restores their ability to flower. In contrast, the promotion of flowering by cytokinin is suppressed by mutation
