An Examination of Charitable Meal Programs in Five Canadian cities.

While there has recently been considerable research and public investment in strategies to address homelessness in Canada, food charity remains the primary response to hunger, with little evaluation of current efforts and no initiatives to develop more effective approaches. Using data from a 2010-2011 survey of charitable food assistance in five Canadian cities, this study was undertaken to describe charitable meal provisioning in each city and to compare the relative roles of emergency programs and multi-service agencies and their capacity to meet food needs. Most meals were provided by multi…

Helping smokers quit improves health and budgets.

(1) Treatment of smoking-related illnesses accounts for about 11 percent of Medicaid expenditures. (2) As of 2014, seven states provide comprehensive tobacco-cessation coverage to Medicaid enrollees, including individual counseling, group counseling, and seven types of U.S. Food and Drug Administration-approved medications. (3) Without assistance from medication or other forms of help, around 4 percent to 7 percent of quit attempts are successful; with tobacco-cessation medication use, the success rate is 25 percent.

Insurance coverage of special foods needed in the treatment of phenylketonuria.

Optimal medical management of phenylketonuria (PKU) requires the use of special low-phenylalanine foods for many years. For women with PKU, elevated maternal blood levels of phenylalanine even at conception can lead to fetal damage. Despite this need, private health insurance, Medicaid, and other public health programs often exclude the cost of these foods from their benefits. The New York State Department of Health conducted a survey of metabolic disorders treatment centers to elucidate the problems PKU patients have obtaining and paying for the special foods essential to their care. Payment

A novel patient support program to address isotretinoin adherence: proof-of-concept analysis.

The iPLEDGE protocol for isotretinoin treatment requires multiple steps to be completed within strict timing windows, resulting in many interruptions or discontinuations of treatment. The US Food and Drug Administration has indicated that approximately 40% of isotretinoin prescriptions written over the course of one year of the iPLEDGE program were denied due to failure to comply with iPLEDGE. Insurance restrictions add to the likelihood of prescriptions not being filled. Here, we describe a novel program implemented specifically to assist patients and providers with improving isotretinoin the

Childhood Adversity and Adult Reports of Food Insecurity Among Households With Children.

INTRODUCTION: Exposure to childhood adversity, including abuse, neglect, and household dysfunction, is associated with negative long-term health and economic outcomes. Little is known about how adversity exposure in parents' early lives may be related to later food insecurity for parents and their children. This study investigated the association between female caregivers' adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and household and child food insecurity, taking into account depressive symptoms. METHODS: This study used cross-sectional data from 1,255 female caregivers of children aged <4 years sur

The Direct and Moderating Effect of Food Insecurity on Obesity-A Cross-Sectional Study.

Although a substantial body of evidence indicates that food insecurity is positively associated with obesity, the underlying mechanisms of this relationship remain unclear. This cross-sectional study, conducted on 859 individuals, aimed to examine the association between food insecurity and obesity. Food insecurity was assessed using the Household Food Insecurity Access Scale (HFIAS), which was developed by the Food and Nutrition Technical Assistance (FANTA) project under the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). Factors influencing food insecurity and the role of food in

The sources, properties, extraction, biosynthesis, pharmacology, and application of lycopene.

Lycopene is an important pigment with an alkene skeleton from Lycopersicon esculentum, which is also obtained from some red fruits and vegetables. Lycopene is used in the food field with rich functions and serves in the medical field with multiple clinical values because it has dual functions of both medicine and food. It was found that lycopene was mainly isolated by solvent extraction, ultrasonic-assisted extraction, supercritical fluid extraction, high-intensity pulsed electric field-assisted extraction, enzymatic-assisted extraction, and microwave-assisted extraction. Meanwhile, it was als

Control of the transmission of Vibrio cholerae and other enteropathogens by foods originating from endemic areas in South America and elsewhere as a model situation.

The cholera-pandemic raging in South and Middle America and endemic cholera in other countries call for measures of health protection of the local population, but particularly with respect to the young, old, pregnant and immunocompromised citizens of countries importing food from the areas where the disease has struck. Instead of harshly barring importation, a more humanitarian policy is recommended, relying on assistance of areas presenting risks, with the introduction of and adherence to rigorous measures of longitudinally integrated microbiological safety assurance. This model is equally ap

Screening for marginal food security in young children in primary care.

BACKGROUND: Household food insecurity (FI), even at marginal levels, is associated with poor child health outcomes. The Nutrition Screening Tool for Every Preschooler (NutriSTEP®) is a valid and reliable 17-item parent-completed measure of nutrition risk and includes a single item addressing FI which may be a useful child-specific screening tool. We evaluated the diagnostic test properties of the single NutriSTEP® FI question using the 2-item Hunger Vital Sign™ as the criterion measure in a primary care population of healthy children ages 18 months to 5 years. RESULTS: The sample included 117

Relative food abundance predicts greater binge-eating symptoms in subsequent hours among young adults experiencing food insecurity: Support for the "feast-or-famine" cycle hypothesis from an ecological momentary assessment study.

Food insecurity (FI) may increase risk for binge eating through a "feast-or-famine" cycle, where fluctuations in food availability correspon … ion analyses revealed that this association was significant only among individuals reporting use of food assistance programs, high engagement in resource trade-off coping strategies (e.g., skipping bill payments to buy food), or low food security-related self-efficacy.
