[A food poisoning outbreak caused by purple Washington clam contaminated with norovirus (Norwalk-like virus) and hepatitis A virus].

A party of 57 people dined together in a restaurant in Hamamatsu City on December 11, 2001. The next day, 22 of them developed symptoms of acute gastroenteritis, such as diarrhea, vomiting, and fever. Examination of 4 fecal specimens from these patients by ELISA for Norovirus (Norwalk-like virus, NV) detected both genogroup I (GI) and genogroup II (GII) NV in all the 4 specimens. In addition, RT-PCR and real-time PCR methods for NV detected the NV gene. Approximately one month after the outbreak of the food poisoning (acute gastroenteritis) by NV, 4 individuals in the same party developed type

Chronic ingestion of a potential food contaminant induces gastrointestinal inflammation in rats: role of nitric oxide and mast cells.

Chronic ingestion of xenobiotics could be pathogenic in the gastrointestinal tract. Recently, we showed that acute low administration of a food contaminant (diquat) induced intestinal secretion involving mast cells and nitric oxide. This work aimed to determine in rats: (1) the influence of a low level (0.1 mg/kg/day per os) chronic ingestion of diquat on gastrointestinal immune cells, and (2) the participation of nitric oxide synthases (NOS) in these effects. Diquat increased both gastric and jejunal myeloperoxidase activities, tissue histamine in vitro release after stimulation by 48/80, and

[Food poisoning in cattle caused by ingestion of brewers' grains contaminated with Clostridium botulinum type B (author's transl)].

In 1977, outbreaks of disease associated with serious losses occurred on twenty cattle farms. This disease was due to the fact that the animals had been fed brewers' grains. The clinical picture was marked by anorexia, profuse salivation, regurgitation and dehydration. The course of the disease varied with the severity of the attack. Toxicological tests were negative. Cl. botulinum type B as well as toxin type B were found to be present in the brewers' grains fairly often. As a rule, Cl. botulinum was also detected in the rumen contents and faeces. The treatment of the animals is described; th

Emerging strategies for food contaminant detection via DNAzyme-driven DNA walker platforms: Strategies, applications, and future perspectives.

DNA walkers are a type of programmable, dynamic DNA nanomachine composed of synthetic oligonucleotides that move in a controlled manner along specific nucleic acid tracks through strand displacement or catalytic cleavage reactions. Among the various methods used to power them, DNAzyme-driven DNA walkers have attracted increasing interest because they combine enzyme-like catalytic functions with the inherent advantages of DNA materials. DNAzymes are single-stranded DNA molecules capable of catalyzing precise cleavage of DNA or RNA substrates in the presence of metal ion cofactors. They offer be

Balancing benefits and risks in food waste biochar: Pyrolysis severity effects on contaminant fate, nutrient leaching, and biological safety.

Thermochemical conversion of food waste into biochar offers a compelling circular economy pathway for soil amendment, yet comprehensive safety assessments remain limited. This study assessed the stability, contaminant fate, nutrient leaching, and microbial compatibility of bone and mixed vegetable biochars pyrolyzed at 300-600 °C. Feedstock identity dominated variance in yield, ash, and carbon (η2 = 0.73-0.91), whereas temperature governed the volatile heteroatoms H, O and N (η2 = 0.44-0.74; all p < 0.001). At 600 °C, bone retained higher yield (60.3 ± 0.7 % vs 34.4 ± 0.7 %) and appreciable po

Holistic food safety evaluation of herbs: methods for the determination of organic and inorganic trace contaminants in Moringa stenopetala as a case study.

Moringa stenopetala is considered a superfood due to the many bioactive compounds that it provides to the diet. However, like all edible plants, it is mandatory to guarantee food safety. Thus it is necessary to develop analytical methods that can rapidly and accurately determine hazardous pollutants, to evaluate compliance with food regulations. In this regard, two multi-component procedures were developed trying to cover some of the main organic and inorganic potential contaminants. A microwave-assisted digestion followed by electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry was used for arsenic,

Screening and identification of unknown chemical contaminants in food based on liquid chromatography-high-resolution mass spectrometry and machine learning.

Unknown or unexpected chemical contaminants and/or their transformation products in food that may be harmful to humans need to be discovered for comprehensive safety evaluation. Liquid chromatography-high-resolution mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS) is a powerful tool for detecting chemical contaminants in food samples. However, identifying all of peaks in LC-HRMS is not possible, but if class information is known in advance, further identification will become easier. In this work, a novel MS2 spectra classification-driven screening strategy was constructed based on LC-HRMS and machine learning. Fir

Application of In Vitro Models for Studying the Mechanisms Underlying the Obesogenic Action of Endocrine-Disrupting Chemicals (EDCs) as Food Contaminants-A Review.

Obesogenic endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) belong to the group of environmental contaminants, which can adversely affect human health. A growing body of evidence supports that chronic exposure to EDCs can contribute to a rapid increase in obesity among adults and children, especially in wealthy industrialized countries with a high production of widely used industrial chemicals such as plasticizers (bisphenols and phthalates), parabens, flame retardants, and pesticides. The main source of human exposure to obesogenic EDCs is through diet, particularly with the consumption of contaminated

Identification of barley-specific peptide markers that persist in processed foods and are capable of detecting barley contamination by LC-MS/MS.

UNLABELLED: Consumers, especially those with allergies and/or intolerances, should have confidence in two critical areas of food safety: foods should be correctly labelled and free from contamination. To this end, global proteomic analysis employing LC-MS/MS of gluten-enriched extracts derived from 12 barley cultivars was undertaken, providing a foundation for the development of MS-based quantitative methodologies that would enable the detection of barley contamination in foods. Subsequently, a number of candidate barley-specific peptide markers were evaluated by multiple-reaction monitoring M

A low-cost and simple paper-based microfluidic device for simultaneous multiplex determination of different types of chemical contaminants in food.

It is difficult to carry out multiple detection of different type of chemicals because of the different chemical microenvironment requirements. Herein, a low-cost and simple paper-based microfluidic device integrated with fluorescence labeled single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) functionalized graphene oxide sensor was developed for the multiplex determination of different types of chemical contaminants in food. In this work, Cy5 labeled corresponding functional ssDNA for different analytes associated with graphene oxide (ssDNA-GO) were employed as core detection sensors to sensitively report the prese

Adherence to the EAT-Lancet diet in relation to mortality and exposure to food contaminants in population-based cohorts of Swedish men and women.

BACKGROUND: The EAT-Lancet diet was created to support dietary transition towards sustainable diets. Current evidence indicates that adherence to the EAT-Lancet diet may reduce mortality risk, yet how adherence may impact dietary exposure to food contaminants remains unexplored. We aimed to estimate the association between adherence to the EAT-Lancet diet and i) all-cause, cardiovascular-, and cancer-mortality and ii) predicted dietary exposure to the following food contaminants: cadmium, methylmercury, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and pesticide residues. METHODS: We used self-reported d
