Enteric outbreak surveillance in British Columbia, 2009-2013.

BACKGROUND: Understanding enteric disease outbreak sources, burden of illness, mode of transmission and use of interventions informs planning, policy development and prevention programs. OBJECTIVE: To describe trends in enteric disease outbreaks investigated in British Columbia (BC) between 2009 and 2013. METHODS: An analysis was conducted of enteric disease outbreaks that had been entered into a national, secure web-enabled outbreak reporting system using the Canadian Network for Public Health Intelligence (CNPHI) and investigated in BC between January 1, 2009 and December 31, 2013. [Protozoal antigen positivity in diarrheal patients admitted to emergency service: a point prevalence study].

Intestinal parasites are the important etiological agents of water and food related diarrhea cases which are frequently seen during summer/early autumn seasons in developing countries. This point prevalence study was aimed to determine the protozoal antigen positivity rate in diarrhea cases admitted to the emergency service in one single day. A total of 198 diarrheal patients (90 male, 108 female; age range: 1-82 years, mean age: 29 years) who were admitted to the emergency service of Ankara Training and Research Hospital were included in the study. Macroscopic and direct microscopic examinati

A summary of surveillance, morbidity and microbiology of laboratory-confirmed cases of infant botulism in Canada, 1979-2019.

BACKGROUND: Infant botulism is a rare toxicoinfectious disease caused by colonization of the infant's intestine with botulinum neurotoxin-producing clostridia (i.e. Clostridium botulinum or neurotoxigenic strains of C. butyricum or C. baratii). Our goal was to examine data from laboratory-confirmed cases of infant botulism reported in Canada to summarize incidence over time, over geographic distribution by province or territory, and by sex, and to compare these parameters with data from the Canadian Notifiable Disease Surveillance System (CNDSS). The average age of onset, serotype of botulinum

The Harris Center: Expanding Integrated Care with Partnerships Beyond Traditional Clinic Walls.

Integrated behavioral health care has advanced from simple service colocation to a coordinated, system-wide approach that connects behavioral health, primary care, emergency medicine, social services, and community support. Health systems increasingly rely on partnerships to address the complex medical and social needs driving population health outcomes. The Harris Center for Mental Health and IDD (The Harris Center) illustrates this evolution, operating as a comprehensive population health partner that serves nearly 90,000 individuals annually across Harris County. Through deep integration wi

Primary health care challenges: insights from older people with multimorbidity in Malawi - a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: The global population is undergoing a significant surge in aging leading to increased susceptibility to various forms of progressive illnesses. This phenomenon significantly impacts both individual health and healthcare systems. Low and Middle Income Countries face particular challenges, as their Primary Health Care (PHC) settings often lack the necessary human and material resources to effectively address the escalating healthcare demands of the older people. This study set out to explore the experiences of older people living with progressive multimorbidity in accessing PHC servi

Parenteral nutrition in the critically ill patient.

A 67-year-old woman with type 2 diabetes mellitus undergoes extensive resection of the small bowel and right colon with a jejunostomy and colostomy because of mesenteric ischemia. In the surgical intensive care unit, severe systemic inflammatory response syndrome with possible sepsis develops. The patient is treated with volume resuscitation, vasopressor support, mechanical ventilation, broad-spectrum antibiotics, and intravenous insulin infusion. Low-dose tube feedings are initiated postoperatively through a nasogastric tube. However, these feedings are discontinued after the development of e

[Internal diseases with special emphasis on endocrine disorders during war conditions].

Presented here is our own experience acquired in the course of one war-year in the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovnia. Numerous factors that have altered the picture of a number of diseases, their frequency, character and intensity, and as a result, their diagnostica and therapy, have been noticed. Most frequent factors are the following: poorer personal and general states of hygiene, lower standard of living with general lack of food of all kinds, physical strains, exposure to psychotraumas, temperature and climatic changes, life in collective centres and siege, constant migrations of the pop

Prolonged length of stays and its associated factors among pediatric surgical patients in Oromia, Central part of Ethiopia: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric surgical diseases are conditions that require surgery in children to save lives, prevent disability, or provide palliative care. Surgeries can be major or minor based on factors like severity, and complexity. Prolonged hospital stay could significantly affect the limited resources of the hospital, and further lead to post-operative complications, and poor surgical outcome. Identifying the factors that contribute to longer hospital stays could improve quality of patient care and service delivery. However, there is limited evidence in Ethiopia, particularly among paediatric

Estimating facility-level greenhouse gas emissions in U.S. hospitals with machine learning imputation of incomplete self-reported data.

The U.S. healthcare industry has the largest per-capita carbon footprint compared with those of other countries. Despite growing commitments and efforts to decarbonization hospitals face challenges in reducing emissions in part because hospital-level estimates of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are limited or unavailable. This study estimates hospital-level GHG emissions from 38 sources across seven operational sectors for 283 hospitals, representing approximately 4% of U.S. hospitals in 2020, that voluntarily participated in the Practice Greenhealth Environmental Excellence Award program. Predictors of self-reported general health status in people experiencing homelessness with serious mental illness.

PURPOSE: The growing homeless population in the U.S.A. is disproportionately impacted by poor mental and physical health status, including a higher incidence of acute and chronic health problems, increased hospitalizations, and premature mortality compared to the general population. This study examined the association between demographic, social, and clinical factors and perceptions of general health status among the homeless population during admission to an integrated behavioral health treatment program. METHODS: The study sample included 331 adults experiencing homelessness with a serious

Schools at the center of a public health emergency: leveraging schools for pediatric COVID-19 vaccination.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration's expansion of COVID-19 vaccine eligibility in 2021 to include children presented opportunities and challenges to ensure widespread access. Children, and especially adolescents, were a crucial target population to reduce community positivity rates and support a resumption of in-person academics. Though existing school-based vaccination programs have demonstrated success in improving vaccination rates on an individual school level, best practice strategies for employing mass vaccination programs quickly in response to public health emergencies have yet to b

Botulism Outbreak in a Regional Community Hospital: Lessons Learned in Transfer and Transport Considerations.

Botulism is a potentially lethal disease caused by a toxin released by Clostridium botulinum. Outbreaks of botulism from food sources can lead to a Mass Casualty Incident (MCI) involving sometimes hundreds of individuals. We report on a recent outbreak of botulism treated at a regional community hospital with a focus on emergency medical services (EMS) response and transport considerations. Case Presentation: There were 53 patient evaluated for botulism at the sending facility. In total, 11 botulism exposures required intubation at the sending facility. Twenty-four patients were ultimately tra
