Impact of the force feedback feature on transoral robotic surgery.

Transoral robotic surgery (TORS) has become an established minimally invasive approach for treating head and neck cancer. However, the absence of haptic feedback constrains surgeons to rely almost exclusively on visual cues, which may compromise tissue handling and resection accuracy. This study evaluated the effect of force feedback on surgical performance using a robotic system equipped with haptic feedback in a simulated TORS model. Fifteen head and neck surgeons, categorized as experienced or trainees, performed simulated transoral tumor resection using a plant-derived soft tissue phantom.

Modeling Lanthanide Ions in Solution: A Versatile Force Field in Aqueous and Organic Solvents.

In this paper, we propose a new nonpolarizable force field for describing the Ln3+ (Ln = lanthanide) series based on a 12-6-4 Lennard-Jones potential. The development of the force field was performed in pure water by adjusting both the ion-oxygen distance and the hydration free energy. This force field accurately reproduces the Ln3+ hydration properties through the series, especially the coordination number that is hardly accessible using a nonpolarizable force field. Then, the validity and the transferability of the current force field were evaluated for two different systems containing Ln3+

The relationship of the angle of immobilisation of the knee to the force applied to the extensor mechanism when partially weight-bearing. A gait-analysis study in normal volunteers.

We describe the influence of the angle of immobilisation during partial weight-bearing on the forces across the extensor mechanism of the knee. Gait analysis was performed on eight healthy male subjects with the right knee in an orthotic brace locked at 0 degree, 10 degrees, 20 degrees and 30 degrees, with the brace unlocked and also without a brace. The ground reaction force, the angle of the knee and the net external flexion movement about the knee were measured and the extensor mechanism force was calculated. The results showed a direct non-linear relationship between the angle of knee flex

Three-dimensional force analysis of surgical manipulations at the long process of the incus.

PURPOSE: Surgical manipulation with application of inappropriate force may damage middle ear structures leading to hearing loss. This work analyzes the forces applied in simulated otosurgical exercises in a laboratory set-up by measuring the spatial components of applied forces with objective assessment criteria. With these criteria, the individual force characteristics applied by the surgeon can be quantified and an objective feedback can be given about their surgical maneuvers. METHODS: A natural size model of the human incus was mounted on a load cell to measure the spatial forces in all t

Agreement between force and deceleration measures during backward somersault landings.

This study examined the agreement between force platform and inertial measurement unit (IMU) measures of backward somersault landings. Seven female gymnasts performed three trials, taking off from a 90 cm vaulting box and using competition landing technique. Two force platforms (1000 Hz) covered with a 6.4 cm thick carpeted landing surface measured the ground reaction forces. One inertial measurement unit (500 Hz) fixed on the second thoracic vertebra measured peak resultant deceleration of the gymnast. Measurement agreement between vertical and resultant peak force measures, and resultant pea

Analysis of particle-wall interactions during particle free fall.

In this study, the vertical motion of a particle in a quiescent fluid falling toward a horizontal plane wall is analyzed, based on simplified models. Using the distance between the particle and wall as a parameter, the effects of various forces acting on the particle and the particle motion are examined. Without the colloidal and Brownian forces being included, the velocity of small particles is found to be approximately equal to the inverse of the drag force correction function used in this study as the particle approaches the near-wall region. Colloidal force is added to the particle equatio

Store-operated Ca²⁺ entry and depolarization explain the anomalous behaviour of myometrial SR: effects of SERCA inhibition on electrical activity, Ca²⁺ and force.

In the myometrium SR Ca(2+) depletion promotes an increase in force but unlike several other smooth muscles, there is no Ca(2+) sparks-STOCs coupling mechanism to explain this. Given the importance of the control of contractility for successful parturition, we have examined, in pregnant rat myometrium, the effects of SR Ca(2+)-ATPase (SERCA) inhibition on the temporal relationship between action potentials, Ca(2+) transients and force. Simultaneous recording of electrical activity, calcium and force showed that SERCA inhibition, by cyclopiazonic acid (CPA 20 μM), caused time-dependent changes

The impact of cerebellar transcranial direct current stimulation on isometric bench press performance in trained athletes.

Athletic development centers on optimizing performance, including technical skills and fundamental motor abilities such as strength and speed. Parameters such as maximum contraction force and rate of force development, influence athletic success, although performance gains become harder to achieve as athletic abilities increase. Non-invasive transcranial direct current stimulation of the cerebellum (CB-tDCS) has been used successfully to increase force production in novices, although the potential effects in athletes remain unexplored. The present study examined the effects of CB-tDCS on maxim

Effects of bench press technique variations on musculoskeletal shoulder loads and potential injury risk.

While shoulder injuries resulting from the bench press exercise are commonly reported, no biomechanical evidence for lowering injury risk is currently available. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to compare musculoskeletal shoulder loads and potential injury risk during several bench press variations. Ten experienced strength athletes performed 21 technical variations of the barbell bench press, including variations in grip width of 1,1.5 and 2 bi-acromial widths (BAW), shoulder abduction angles of 45°, 70° and 90°, and scapula poses including neutral, retracted, and released conditi

The role of skin mechanics in contact force variation under different friction conditions.

When grasping objects, humans actively adjust grip force in response to surface slipperiness and motion. Previous studies have showed that corrective actions occur after tactile afferents signal surface friction or slip events. However, the influence of the mechanical behavior of the skin on the development of contact forces is poorly understood. In this study, using contact kinematics derived from a natural reach-and-grasp task, we applied a glass surface onto restrained fingers via a robotic manipulator under low- and high-friction conditions. Contact forces were measured with a force sensor

Personalized Robotic Training on a Planar Reaching Task.

Based on recent advancements in neuro-adaptive control, we evaluated a novel iterative algorithm for generating customized training forces. The objective was to study the motor adaptation required to compensate for robot-generated perturbations during an upper-limb reaching task. We hypothesized that the adaptation process would induce changes in the brain's feed-forward command, dynamically reshaping the neuromuscular system to refine movement patterns and result in trajectory alterations. The results indicate that after a training period with these robot-generated forces, trajectories underg

Experiences of forced sex among female patrons of alcohol-serving venues in a South African township.

South Africa has among the highest rates of forced sex worldwide, and alcohol use has consistently been associated with risk of forced sex in South Africa. However, methodological challenges affect the accuracy of forced sex measurements. This study explored the assessment of forced sex among South African women attending alcohol-serving venues and identified factors associated with reporting recent forced sex. Women (n = 785) were recruited from 12 alcohol-serving venues in a peri-urban township in Cape Town. Brief self-administered surveys included questions about lifetime and recent experie

Mechanisms of mechanical force in periodontal homeostasis: a review.

Mechanical forces affect periodontal health through multiple mechanisms. Normally, mechanical forces can boost soft and hard tissue metabolism. However, excessive forces may damage the periodontium or result in irreversible inflammation, whereas absence of occlusion forces also leads to tissue atrophy and bone resorption. We systemically searched the PubMed and Web of Science databases and found certain mechanisms of mechanical forces on immune defence, extracellular matrix (ECM) metabolism, specific proteins, bone metabolism, characteristic periodontal ligament stem cells (PDLSCs) and non-cod

A Forefoot Strike Requires the Highest Forces Applied to the Foot Among Foot Strike Patterns.

Ground reaction force is often used to predict the potential risk of injuries but may not coincide with the forces applied to commonly injured regions of the foot. This study examined the forces applied to the foot, and the associated moment arms made by three foot strike patterns. 10 male runners ran barefoot along a runway at 3.3 m/s using forefoot, midfoot, and rearfoot strikes. The Achilles tendon and ground reaction force moment arms represented the shortest distance between the ankle joint axis and the line of action of each force. The Achilles tendon and joint reaction forces were calcu

Baseball hardness as a risk factor for eye injuries.

BACKGROUND: Baseball is the leading cause of sports-related eye injuries in young persons. It is known that softer baseballs reduce the potential for brain and cardiac injury, but it has been speculated that softer baseballs may increase eye injuries by intruding more into the orbit. It also has been claimed that softer baseballs would change the "feel" of the game. OBJECTIVES: To determine the orbital intrusion and eye injury potential of baseballs of varying hardness, and whether a player can feel the difference between these different baseballs. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Orbital force and pe

Higher Force Metrics Associated With Known Risk Factors for Difficult Laryngeal Exposure.

OBJECTIVE: Several factors are reported as predictors of difficult laryngeal exposure (DLE). This study investigates force metrics associated with predictive factors of DLE during suspension microlaryngoscopy (SML) utilizing data recorded by the laryngeal force sensor (LFS). We hypothesize that patient factors associated with DLE will record higher forces during laryngeal surgery. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective observational cohort clinical trial data examining secondary endpoints. SETTING: Tertiary medical center. METHODS: The LFS recorded maximum force and average force during SML in 214 laryn

Non-knee-spanning muscles contribute to tibiofemoral shear as well as valgus and rotational joint reaction moments during unanticipated sidestep cutting.

Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries are a burdensome condition due to potential surgical requirements and increased risk of long term debilitation. Previous studies indicate that muscle forces play an important role in the development of ligamentous loading, yet these studies have typically used cadaveric models considering only the knee-spanning quadriceps, hamstrings and gastrocnemius muscle groups. Using a musculoskeletal modelling approach, we investigated how lower-limb muscles produce and oppose key tibiofemoral reaction forces and moments during the weight acceptance phase of unan

Effect of power-assisted hand-rim wheelchair propulsion on shoulder load in experienced wheelchair users: A pilot study with an instrumented wheelchair.

This study aims to compare hand-rim and power-assisted hand-rim propulsion on potential risk factors for shoulder overuse injuries: intensity and repetition of shoulder loading and force generation in the extremes of shoulder motion. Eleven experienced hand-rim wheelchair users propelled an instrumented wheelchair on a treadmill while upper-extremity kinematic, kinetic and surface electromyographical data was collected during propulsion with and without power-assist. As a result during power-assisted propulsion the peak resultant force exerted at the hand-rim decreased and was performed with s
