[Two atypical courses of bronchial foreign body in children].

The long-term course of bronchial foreign body retention is unknown. This article reports 2 cases with late diagnosis and their progression. In the first case, a transcutaneous eviction of the foreign body occurred. Migration through the lung and the muscular wall might have been facilitated by cough and the elongated shape of the foreign body. In the second case, retention of the foreign body produced bronchiectasis. Given the impossibility of extraction and the localized, symptomatic, and invalidating lung complications, lobectomy was performed. Surgical indications after foreign body inhala

Prevertebral Abscess Revealing a Rare Foreign Body: A Case Report.

Background: Migrated foreign bodies in the prevertebral region represent a rare but potentially serious condition. This case underscores the importance of thorough visual and digital intraoperative exploration for successful foreign body retrieval and highlights the potential diagnostic and surgical challenges associated with migrated foreign bodies in the cervical region. Case report: A 77-year-old female patient presented with dysphagia following the intake of an Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme (ACE) inhibitor. Due to hemodynamic instability and laboratory findings that indicated multiple orga

Late migration of a toothpick into the bladder: initial presentation with urosepsis and hydronephrosis.

OBJECTIVE: Migration of objects into the urinary tract from the digestive tract has been described. Our objective is to report the case of a patient with urosepsis and late migration of toothpick from the gastrointestinal tract into the bladder. METHODS: A 78 y/o male patient with uro-sepsis and hydronephrosis was admitted. The initial suspected etiological cause was obstructive ureteral lithiasis. CT scan showed hydronephrosis and a possible ureteral stone. However, a femoral catheter was in place near the toothpick location, which jeopardized the detection of the foreign body. Antibiotic th

Ophthalmomyiasis treated by argon-laser photocoagulation.

A live, subretinal fly larva was observed in a 16-year-old Caucasian female. Argon-laser photocoagulation killed the larva without a destructive inflammatory response. The patient's vision improved from 20/200 to 20/20 as the eye recovered. Clinical photographs demonstrate the larva and the acute and later healed pathopneumonic subretinal tracks. The laser photocoagulation technique is described.

Lost and found: surgical adventures in migratory foreign body cases.

OBJECTIVE: This observational study investigates migratory foreign bodies in the upper aerodigestive tract, emphasising clinical presentation, assessment and factors contributing to extraluminal migration. METHODS: Conducted across multiple medical centres in India, the study included 15 patients aged 11 to 70 years. Detailed observations, demographic information, clinical history, radiological findings and intra-operative outcomes were compiled. RESULTS: Fifteen patients presented with varied symptoms. Fish and chicken bones, along with metal wires, were common foreign bodies. Computed tomo

Ventriculoperitoneal shunt migration into the pulmonary artery.

BACKGROUND: Ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunting is the most common form of treatment for hydrocephalus. Complications of VP shunts may occur anywhere along their course from the cerebral ventricle to the peritoneal cavity. Rare complications such as migration of the peritoneal catheter into the stomach, gallbladder, urinary bladder, vagina, liver, bowel, colon, and diaphragm have been described in the literature. METHODS: In this review of the literature we discuss the rare but serious event of migration of the distal catheter of a ventriculoperitoneal shunt (VP shunt) into the pulmonary arter

Intrapulmonary migration of a fractured acupuncture needle: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Acupuncture, a traditional Chinese medical treatment, has been gaining popularity over the years. However, it also presents certain risks. We report a case of a patient who discovered a foreign body in their lung several years after undergoing acupuncture. CASE PRESENTATION: A middle-aged woman presented to our hospital with chest pain. An X-ray revealed a needle-like foreign body in the middle lobe of her right lung. The patient had previously undergone acupuncture treatment for local pain in her lower back and lower extremities many years prior. Based on the imaging findings and

[Two children with severe complications following incomplete removal of a percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) catheter].

A 6-year-old boy with multiple severe disabilities was admitted with acute and progressive dyspnoea. A new percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) catheter had been placed 2 weeks earlier, during which the old catheter was cut and left in the stomach. Radiological assessment revealed pneumonia and a traumatic fistula between the oesophagus and the left main bronchus. Respiratory support was required. The patient recovered after oesophagoscopic removal of the remaining portion of the PEG catheter. A 7-year-old boy with multiple severe disabilities presented with an acutely reduced level of co

[Diagnosis and treatment of an occult intrauterine device].

Between February 1978 and December 1985 53 women with lost intrauterine devices (IUD) were treated. To exclude unrecognized expulsion and to locate the device sonography was primarily employed. In 90.6% of cases a correct diagnosis was established. Only in 9.4% of cases a plain X-ray of the abdomen was necessary because sonography was not diagnostic. In 47 patients (88.7%) the IUD could be located by hysteroscopy and was removed. Using biopsy forceps or curette. Of the remaining 6 cases there were 4 with perforation and intraabdominal dislocation, 1 spontaneous expulsion in the interval betwee

Delayed staple penetration of the heart: transthoracic migration with late tamponade.

Most foreign bodies in the chest do their damage at the time of injury. While needle-like objects may migrate (6), delayed intrathoracic injury is rare. Delayed transthoracic penetration of the heart by a staple is reported, and is felt to be unique because acute hemopericardium resulted 30 days after the time of initial injury. The principles of recognition of pericardial tamponade, initial stabilization with periocardiocentesis, and immediate exploration are emphasized.

Migration of Kirschner pin from clavicle into ascending aorta.

Kirschner pins are widely used for fixation of bone, with few and very rarely serious complications. A case is described in which a Kirschner pin migrated in 10 days from the sternal end of the left clavicle into the lumen of the ascending aorta. The exact location of the pin remained unknown until right thoracotomy, during which X-ray examination revealed the unexpected situation. The pin was simply extracted by pushing it through the vessel wall. The patient recovered uneventfully. The complication could have been prevented by bending the outer part of the pins. The possible route of migrati

Hepatic abscess secondary to a rosemary twig migrating from the stomach into the liver.

The ingestion of a foreign body that penetrates the gastric wall and migrates to the liver, where it causes an abscess is uncommon. A case of an ingested rosemary twig perforating the gastric antrum, then migrating to the liver, complicated by hepatic abscess and Staphylococcus aureus sepsis is reported. A 59-year-old man without a history of foreign body ingestion was admitted to our hospital because of sepsis and epigastralgia, which had progressively worsened. No foreign body was identified at preoperative imaging, but a rosemary twig was discovered during laparotomy. The liver abscess and
