Avulsion fracture of the supinator crest of the proximal ulna in the context of elbow joint injuries.

PURPOSE: While performing CT examinations of the elbow, we frequently observed a previously undescribed fracture fragment of the supinator crest of the ulna. According to the anatomy of the lateral collateral ligament complex, this fracture might be an avulsion fracture of the annular ligament and/or the lateral ulnar collateral ligament. The aim of this study was to further characterize these fragments and document their associated injuries. METHODS: Retrospective evaluation of CT scans of the elbow was performed. Conventional X-ray and CT diagnoses were used to systematically document any a

Non-surgical management of an avulsion fracture injury of extensor carpi radialis brevis.

Avulsion fractures at the base of the index finger or long finger metacarpals are rare. We found six cases in the English language of a similar injury involving the extensor carpi radialis brevis. All were treated surgically. We describe an isolated avulsion fracture injury of extensor carpi radialis brevis insertion treated satisfactorily without surgery. The patient healed uneventfully and returned to normal pain free activity.

Reduction and fixation of the avulsion fracture of the tibial eminence using mini-open technique.

The purpose of this prospective study is to present and evaluate a new technique using suture anchors for the treatment of the avulsion fractures of the tibial eminence. Twenty-three consecutive patients with the displaced avulsion fracture of the tibial attachment of anterior cruciate ligament were treated using mini-open technique with suture anchors between 2005 and 2008. According to the classification of Meyers and McKeever, there were 5 type II, 13 type III, and 5 type IV fractures. The median follow-up period was 18 months (range, 12-32 months). The patient assessment included Lysholm s

[Tibial tubercle avulsion fracture - an original method of fragment fixation by K-wires].

An original arthroscopic method of osteosynthesis for treatment of tibial tubercle avulsion is presented and documented on the histories of four patients. The avulsed portion of the tibial tubercle was fixed with two Kirschner wires bent intra-articularly to create hooks for fragment fixation. The K-wires were drilled with the use of a tibial aimer for anterior cruciate ligaments. A brace was applied for 1 to 6 weeks. The implants were removed at 8 to 13 weeks by arthroscopy. During their extraction carried out under anesthesia, one patient had a positive Lachmann test of 5 mm. All patients re

Avulsion fracture of the extensor carpi radialis longus in a rugby player: a case report.

Avulsion fracture of the base of the second metacarpal is an unusual injury, and the cause in the few cases reported in the literature was a fall on a volarly flexed wrist. A case of this rare injury suffered in a sport related accident by a semiprofessional rugby player is reported. It was treated with open reduction and internal fixation after failure of conservative management.

Outcome of avulsion fractures of the ulnar base of the proximal phalanx of the thumb treated nonsurgically.

We report a retrospective study of avulsion fractures of the ulnar collateral ligament of the thumb metacarpophalangeal joint that were treated nonsurgically. The study included 30 patients who answered a questionnaire. None of the patients underwent surgery after treatment. The average follow-up interval was 3.1 years (range, 1-5.2 years). All 30 patients were satisfied with the treatment and outcome. No patient had a permanent job change or inability to participate in recreational activities. Nineteen patients had no pain on motion of the thumb. Of the 20 patients (67%) who agreed to a follo

Avulsion fracture of the sublime tubercle of the ulna: a newly recognized injury in the throwing athlete.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this report is to describe the imaging features in three cases of avulsion injury of the sublime tubercle of the ulna that occurred in throwing athletes. CONCLUSION: Avulsion fracture of the sublime tubercle of the ulna is a potential cause of chronic medial elbow pain in the throwing athlete. This entity is best evaluated with a combination of plain radiographs and coronal MR images, particularly gradient-echo images that show the continuity of the avulsed fragment with the ulnar collateral ligament.

The Segond fracture of the proximal tibia: a small avulsion that reflects major ligamentous damage.

The Segond fracture is a small vertical avulsion injury of the lateral aspect of the proximal tibia just distal to the plateau. It results from excessive internal rotation and varus stress. The plain film and arthrographic findings were studied in nine patients with the fracture. Although previous publications have relied primarily on the anteroposterior projection for diagnosis, the injury was apparent only on the tunnel view in two of our cases. The arthrogram was particularly important in identifying abnormalities of the anterior cruciate ligament (nine of nine cases) and/or meniscal tears

Closed Flexor Tendon Avulsions Associated With a Distal Radius Fracture: A Case Report.

Flexor tendon injuries have been reported in association with distal radius fractures. These are usually chronic in nature, and acute flexor tendon injuries are rare. When these do occur, they tend to be at the level of the fracture and are thought to be caused by direct laceration from the sharp bone edges of the fracture site. There are no reports of injuries more proximal to the fracture site at the musculotendinous junction. We present a patient who sustained a distal radius fracture with associated complete avulsions of the flexor digitorum superficialis tendons to the middle and ring fin

Imaging and management of posterior cruciate ligament avulsion fracture pseudoarthrosis: A case report.

Tibial avulsion fractures of the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) are rare, and chronic cases progressing to non-union or pseudoarthrosis are exceptionally uncommon. We present the case of a 40-year-old woman with posterior knee instability caused by an 8-month-old pseudoarthrosis of the tibial insertion of the PCL. Surgical fixation was performed with a favorable clinical outcome. This case highlights the diagnostic challenges and imaging features of chronic PCL avulsion injuries and underscores the importance of surgical management in achieving joint stability.

Chronic Ischial Avulsion Fracture Excision With Primary Proximal Hamstring Repair: A Technique.

Ischial avulsion fractures classically occur in the pediatric population and are relatively uncommon. These injuries are treated conservatively; however, in cases where there is greater than 2 cm of displacement, surgical intervention is recommended. In some cases, displaced fractures are either misdiagnosed or proper treatment is neglected, and patients who transition into adulthood are left with chronic nonunions that can become a source of pain and disability. Here we present a surgical technique for a chronic ischial avulsion fracture nonunion that is excised, and the hamstring tendons are

Avulsion fracture of the ischial tuberosity treated with the suture bridge technique: a case report.

BACKGROUND: In cases of avulsion fracture of the ischial tuberosity in which the bone fragments are substantially displaced, nonunion may cause pain in the ischial area. Various surgical procedures have been reported, but achieving sufficient fixation strength is difficult. CASE PRESENTATION: We treated a 12-year-old male track-and-field athlete with avulsion fracture of the ischial tuberosity by suture anchor fixation using the suture bridge technique. The boy felt pain in the left gluteal area while running. Radiography showed a left avulsion fracture of the ischial tuberosity with approxim

Tibial Tubercle Avulsion Fracture with Multiple Concomitant Injuries in an Adolescent Male Athlete.

Tibial tubercle avulsion fractures are an uncommon injury occurring due to strong contraction of the quadriceps femoris muscle during leg extension, ultimately causing failure of the physis at the patellar tendon insertion. This injury has been previously reported with various concomitant injuries, such as compartment syndrome from bleeding into the anterior compartment, vascular injury, patellar tendon avulsion, and meniscal injury-exhibited only with fracture types that extend intra-articularly. We report the case of a 14-year-old healthy adolescent male basketball player who sustained this

Insufficiency avulsion fracture of the femoral attachment of the posterior cruciate ligament of the knee joint.

Multiple ligaments are involved in avulsion injuries of the knee joint, including both anterior and posterior cruciate ligaments; however, avulsion injury of the posterior cruciate ligament is less frequently encountered than the anterior counterpart. Furthermore, avulsion of the femoral side of the posterior cruciate ligament is far less common than the tibial one.Femoral attachment avulsion fracture of the posterior cruciate ligaments has been reported in literature in adolescents, rarely in adulthood, and never before in elderly patients, showing an inverse relationship with advancement in

Avulsion fracture of an ossified pes anserinus tendon post-lateral patellar dislocation.

The pes anserinus is a common tendon comprising the tendinous insertions of the sartorius, gracilis, and semitendinosus muscles. It inserts at the anteromedial aspect of the tibia and plays a significant role in stabilization of the medial side of the knee joint. The current article presents a case with recurrent lateral patellar dislocations causing chronic stress along the medial knee stabilizers and consecutive enthesophyte formation at the insertion of the pes anserinus tendon that showed a transverse fracture upon a subsequent incident of traumatic lateral patellar dislocation. Avulsion i
