The hyoid bone, well protected under the protruding chin, seldom sustains fractures in road traffic accidents. We report such a case and review 14 cases found in the world literature.

Linear elastic fracture mechanics predicts that the fracture stress of precracked materials is dependent on the length of the initial crack tip radius of curvature, as supported by the Griffith and Inglis equations. In order to determine the applicability of these equations and the effects of other variables, tensile specimens of bovine tibia were produced with edge cracks of known dimensions and tested to fracture. In 123 cancer patients with metastatic disease, 129 pathologic fractures of long bones were assessed to determine the rate of osseous union. Bony healing was observed in 67% of malignant fractures from multiple myeloma, in 44% of fractures secondary to metastatic hypernephroma, and in 37% of neoplastic fractures from breast carcinoma. No patient with a pathologic fracture secondary to lung carcinoma demonstrated bony repair, and none of these patients lived for more than six months after fracture. The results of treatment of 158 patients with open fractures of bones were analyzed. They depended on different factors: time of admission of the patient, the degree of the injury (according to Kaplan--Markova), choice of the radical surgical treatment of the wound, rational application of antibiotics, intraosseous perfusion, enzymotherapy etc. Treatment of the wound after Syzganov--Tkachenko has been shown to be very effective.
