OBJECTIVE: Huntington's disease (HD) is characterized by motor, cognitive, and neuropsychiatric symptoms. Oculomotor impairments and gait variability have been independently considered as potential markers in HD. However, an integrated analysis of eye movement and gait is lacking. We performed multiple examinations of eye movement and gait variability in HTT mutation carriers, analyzed the consistency between these parameters and clinical severity, and then examined the associations between oculomotor impairments and gait deficits.
METHODS: We included 7 patients with pre-HD, 30 patients with

BACKGROUND: Assessing the effect of insoles on gait biomechanics and foot comfort remains challenging. Our novel in-insole-type wearable sensor device (smart insole) enables accurate quantitative evaluation of gait parameters without affecting the subject's foot comfort.
RESEARCH QUESTION: What are the effects of insoles on gait biomechanics and foot comfort in patients with flatfoot, as evaluated using a novel smart insole?
METHODS: Thirty-three subjects with 61 flatfeet were recruited. Three different types of prefabricated insoles were tested: a control insole as an experimental control,

BACKGROUND: Individuals with Down syndrome (DS) walk with altered gait patterns compared to their typically developing (TD) peers. While walking at faster speeds and with external ankle load, preadolescents with DS demonstrate spatiotemporal and kinetic improvements. However, evidence of joint kinematic adjustments is unknown, which is imperative for targeted rehabilitation design.
RESEARCH QUESTION: How does increasing walking speed and adding ankle load affect the joint kinematics of children with and without DS during overground walking?
METHODS: In this cross-sectional observational stud

BACKGROUND: Evidence exists demonstrating the negative impacts of chronic musculoskeletal pain on key measures of gait. Despite neck pain being the second most common musculoskeletal pain condition, there is a paucity of evidence exploring the impacts of neck pain specifically on these outcomes. The aims of this work were to systematically review the current evidence of the associations between chronic neck pain and measures of gait health and to conduct meta-analysis for quantitative assessment of the effect sizes under different walking conditions.
METHODS: Systematic review was conducted f

Currently, depression has become a common mental disorder, especially among postgraduates. It is reported that postgraduates have a higher risk of depression than the general public, and they are more sensitive to contact with others. Thus, a non-contact and effective method for detecting people at risk of depression becomes an urgent demand. In order to make the recognition of depression more reliable and convenient, we propose a multi-modal gait analysis-based depression detection method that combines skeleton modality and silhouette modality. Firstly, we propose a skeleton feature set to de…

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Gait impairment is a hallmark of cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM). It has been shown to affect quality of life but has not been well defined. Further electromyographic (EMG) characterization of the gait cycle may help elucidate the true neuromuscular pathology with implications on prognosis and rehabilitation techniques.
PURPOSE: This study compares neuromuscular activity in patients with CSM to that of healthy age-matched controls.
STUDY DESIGN: Nonrandomized, prospective, concurrent control cohort study.
METHODS: Neuromuscular activity was measured in 40 patients

BACKGROUND: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a disease of the central nervous system probably based on the autoimmune mechanism against myelin and the action of lymphocyte T. In the last 50 years, more than 150 descriptive studies regarding MS have focused on the etiopathogeny, treatment, diagnosis and prevention of the progressive evolution of MS. Most recently, studies in the field of rehabilitation and diagnosis have tried to present the postural aspects of control/foot and ankle control and gait pattern in MS. The aim of this study is focused on biomechanical foot analyses of MS patients.

INTRODUCTION: In rheumatoid arthritis (RA), signs and symptoms of feet and ankle are common. To evaluate the dynamic function of feet and ankles, namely walking, a variety of gait studies have been published. In this systematic review, we provide a systematic overview of the available gait studies in RA, give a clinimetrical assignment, and review the general conclusions regarding gait in RA.
METHODS: A systematic literature search within the databases PubMed, CINAHL, sportdiscus, Embase, and Scopus was described and performed and delivered 78 original gait studies that were included for furt

Disability and movement-related pain are major symptoms of joint disease, motivating the development of methods to quantify motor behaviour in rodent joint pain models. We used observational scoring and automated methods to compare weight bearing during locomotion and during standing after single joint inflammation induced by Freund's complete adjuvant (0.12-8.0 mg/mL) or carrageenan (0.47-30 mg/mL). Automated gait analysis was based on video capture of prints generated by light projected into the long edge of the floor of a walkway, producing an illuminated image of the contact area of each p…

BACKGROUND: Central cord syndrome (CCS) is considered the most common incomplete spinal cord injury (SCI). Independent ambulation was achieved in 87-97% in young patients with CCS but no gait analysis studies have been reported before in such pathology. The aim of this study was to analyze the gait characteristics of subjects with CCS and to compare the findings with a healthy age, sex and anthropomorphically matched control group (CG), walking both at a self-selected speed and at the same speed.
METHODS: Twelve CCS patients and a CG of twenty subjects were analyzed. Kinematic data were obtai…

Relative movement of skin markers to underlying bone limits a valid interpretation of axial femorotibial rotation in noninvasive optoelectronic gait analysis. A distal femoral clamp is a practical solution for thigh marker placement, however, existing devices are still susceptible to measurement errors at increased angles of knee flexion. We developed the Femoral Epicondylar Frame (FEF), which should result in less femoral rotational measurement error due to its anatomic fitting and controlled pressure adjustment. Seven subjects with a total knee replacement in situ, mean age 71 years, mean bo…

We used a gait analysis system (GAS) to measure the changes in locomotion parameters of adult Sprague-Dawley rats after neuromuscular injury, induced by repeated large-strain lengthening contractions of the dorsiflexors muscles. We developed a logistic regression model from test runs of control and permanently impaired (denervation of the dorsiflexor muscles) rats and used this model to predict the probabilities of locomotory impairment in rats injured by lengthening contractions. The data showed that GAS predicts the probability of locomotory impairment with very high reliability, with values…

Twenty-one patients (23 feet) treated nonsurgically for severely comminuted intraarticular fractures of the calcaneus were evaluated prospectively with a clinical scoring scale and computerized gait analysis. All patients had Sanders type III and type IV fractures. The treatment protocol consisted of no closed reduction, immobilization in removable splint, physiotherapy after edema subsided, and weightbearing after 8 weeks. All patients had a minimum follow-up of 2 years (mean, 38 months). Clinical results were good in 2 patients, fair in 3 patients, and poor in 16 patients. Gait analysis show…

Clinical and functional gait analysis is used widely by different professionals dealing with patients with hemiplegia. The aim of this study was to examine the gait analysis strategies of neurologists, specialists in physical and rehabilitation medicine (physiatrists) and physiotherapists. Differences in global analysis strategy and choice of indicators between different clinicians have not previously been studied precisely, and we believe that a standardized approach would enhance the training of young practitioners. The knowledge acquisition phase (specialists' expertise identification) was …

Incomplete spinal cord injury at ASIA (D) level often leads to major gait re-education attempts for patients and staff. Walking prognosis usually depends upon muscle power loss, degree of spasticity present, type of lower limb joint deformity developing and availability of treatment. As an adjunct to physical examination and observation, instrumented gait analysis can inform treatment, since three-dimensional dynamic joint range motion (kinematics) and estimation of joint forces occurring at the hip, knee and especially ankle/foot (kinetics) can be combined with walking EMG and energy cost tes…
