Hypertrophy of the small intestinal tissue evolved during the initial 9 days in rats fed pectin or guar gum. Hypertrophy of the caecal and colonic tissue continued beyond day 9. Caecal hypertrophy was observed in rats fed pectin, guar gum or resistant starch, while colonic hypertrophy was observed only in rats fed pectin or resistant starch. There is a time lag in the adaptive response of the caecum and colon as compared with the small intestine, at least for dietary polysaccharides. This time lag is suggested to be related to the time required for the microflora to adapt to the dietary PS.

Guar gum is a high-molecular-weight agent that can cause occupational rhinitis and asthma. We surveyed the employees at a carpet-manufacturing plant in which guar gum is used to adhere the dye to the fiber; 162/177 of the employees (92%) participated in the first part of the survey that included a questionnaire and skin prick tests with common allergens and guar gum (1 mg/ml). The effect of 13 weeks of guar gum or cellulose diet consumption upon metabolic parameters was examined in diabetic and control adult Chinese hamsters. The influence of guar gum on gastric emptying of liquids in healthy volunteers and on mouth-to-caecum transit time in controls and partially gastrectomized patients has been studied. The effect of guar gum in lowering urinary glucose excretion and plasma cholesterol was studied in ten sulphonylurea-treated non-insulin dependent diabetic patients during a four week treatment period. The 24-hour urinary glucose excretion fell gradually and increased again to pretreatment value after withdrawal of guar. The glucose output dropped by 33 and 51% in the 3rd and 4th week of the guar treatment period (p less than 0.01) compared to the mean of the pre-plus postguar level. The plasma cholesterol concentration also fell significantly during treatment with guar (p less than 0.01).
