Information processing in the human brain during cognitively demanding goal-directed tasks is thought to involve several large-scale brain networks, including the anterior cingulate-insula network (aCIN) and the fronto-parietal network (FPN). Recent functional MRI (fMRI) studies have provided clues that the aCIN initiates activity changes in the FPN. However, when and how often these networks interact remains largely unknown to date. Here, we systematically examined the oscillatory interactions between the aCIN and the FPN by using the spectral Granger causality analysis of reconstructed brain

BACKGROUND: Late-life depression (LLD) is the major risk factor for elderly suicide, and suicidal ideation (SI) is a crucial stage for prevention. However, LLD are less likely openly express SI. Gamma oscillations, closely linked to cognition and mental processes, may contribute to the pathophysiology of LLD and suicidal behavior through their dysregulation within large-scale brain networks. The aim of our research was to investigate the cortical functional networks in the gamma band to better understand the neurobiological mechanisms underlying SI in LLD.

N-Methyl-d-aspartate receptors (NMDARs) are a family of ligand-gated ionotropic glutamate receptors that mediate a slow, calcium-permeable component to excitatory neurotransmission. The GluN2D subunit is enriched in GABAergic inhibitory interneurons in cortical tissue. Diminished levels of GABAergic inhibition contribute to multiple neuropsychiatric conditions, suggesting that enhancing inhibition might have therapeutic utility, thus making GluN2D modulation an attractive drug target. Here, we describe the actions of a GluN2C/GluN2D-selective positive allosteric modulator, (+)-EU1180-453, whic

In patients with Parkinson's disease, beta (β) and gamma (γ) oscillations are altered in the basal ganglia, and this abnormality contributes to the pathophysiology of bradykinesia. However, it is unclear whether β and γ rhythms at the primary motor cortex (M1) level influence bradykinesia. Transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) can modulate cortical rhythms by entraining endogenous oscillations. We tested whether β- and γ-tACS on M1 modulate bradykinesia in patients with Parkinson's disease by analysing the kinematic features of repetitive finger tapping, including movement amplit

BACKGROUND: Temporal resolution of cortical, auditory processing mechanisms is suggested to be linked to peak frequency of neuronal gamma oscillations in auditory cortex areas (individual gamma frequency, IGF): Individuals with higher IGF tend to have better temporal resolution.
HYPOTHESIS: Modulating ongoing gamma activity with transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) is expected to improve performance in gap detection (GD) tasks (shorter GD thresholds) if the frequency is higher and to decrease GD performance (longer GD thresholds) if the frequency is lower than IGF.

It has previously been reported that sodium valproate (Epilim) lowers plasma ACTH levels in Nelson's syndrome. This report describes further experience with its use. Ten patients with Nelson's syndrome were treated with sodium valproate (600-1200 mg/day) for 5-32 weeks. Plasma ACTH was measured by cytochemical methods and RIA. Initial treatment for 5-12 weeks significantly (P less than 0.005) lowered plasma ACTH from a pretreatment mean of 2460 +/- 1870 ng/liter to 480 +/- 330 ng/liter, and the ACTH circadian rhythm was restored in two patients. On discontinuing treatment, plasma ACTH levels r

Synaptic dysfunction and loss are central drivers of cognitive decline in Alzheimer's disease (AD), yet current therapeutic approaches targeting amyloid-β or tau pathology have largely failed to rescue synaptic function. Neural oscillations and synaptic plasticity are tightly coupled and underpin functional brain networks, suggesting that modulating oscillatory dynamics may offer new therapeutic avenues. Here, we developed a strategy for precise, non-genetic neuromodulation using focused ultrasound and piezoelectric Ba0.85Ca0.15Zr0.1Ti0.9O3 (BCZT) nanoparticles to generate targeted, gamma-freq

In a previously published study, we found atypical visual cortical laterality patterns during global motion perception in 5-month-old infants who showed high levels of autistic symptoms in toddlerhood. Here, using data from a separate experiment within the same recording session, we examined whether these results could reflect altered visual cortical functional connectivity in theta, alpha, and gamma rhythms. We assessed this in a sample of 5-month- old infants (n = 59; 39 elevated familial likelihood of autism) by means of electroencephalography (EEG) when they were watching videos showing so…

Understanding the effects of radiation and its possible influence on the nervous system are of great clinical interest. However, there have been few electrophysiological studies on brain activity after exposure to ionizing radiation (IR). A new methodological approach regarding the assessment of the possible effects of IR on brain activity is the use of linear and nonlinear mathematical methods in the analysis of complex time series, such as brain oscillations measured using the electrocorticogram (ECoG). The objective of this study was to use linear and nonlinear mathematical methods as bioma

Coordinated activity spanning anatomically distributed neuronal networks underpins cognition and mediates limbic-cortical interactions during learning, memory, and decision-making. We used CP55940, a potent agonist of brain cannabinoid receptors known to disrupt coordinated activity in hippocampus, to investigate the roles of network oscillations during hippocampal and medial prefrontal cortical (mPFC) interactions in rats. During quiet wakefulness and rest, CP55940 dose-dependently reduced 0.1-30 Hz local field potential power in CA1 of the hippocampus while concurrently decreasing 30-100 Hz

Aging adults typically show reduced ability to ignore task-irrelevant information, an essential skill for optimal performance in many cognitive operations, including those requiring working memory (WM) resources. In a first experiment, young and elderly human participants of both genders performed an established WM paradigm probing inhibitory abilities by means of valid, invalid, and neutral retro-cues. Elderly participants showed an overall cost, especially in performing invalid trials, whereas younger participants' general performance was comparatively higher, as expected.Inhibitory abilitie

The sensory/neural Temporal Sampling (TS) theory of developmental language disorder (DLD) is based on the sensory and linguistic impairments in rhythm processing that are found in children with both developmental dyslexia (DD) and DLD. These sensory/linguistic impairments include decreased sensitivity to amplitude rise times (ARTs, the sensory triggers related to automatic cortical speech tracking), syllable stress patterns and speech rhythm. At the neural level TS theory predicts impairments in the cortical tracking of different rates of amplitude modulation (AM) in the speech signal <10 Hz.

Substance abuse disorders are linked to alteration of circadian rhythms, although the molecular and neuronal pathways implicated have not been fully elucidated. Addictive drugs, such as cocaine, induce a rapid increase of dopamine levels in the brain. Here, we show that acute administration of cocaine triggers reprogramming in circadian gene expression in the striatum, an area involved in psychomotor and rewarding effects of drugs. This process involves the activation of peroxisome protein activator receptor gamma (PPARγ), a nuclear receptor involved in inflammatory responses. PPARγ reprogramm

In a recent study, analyzing the modulation of γ-band oscillations, Naro and colleagues demonstrated that transcranial alternating current stimulation could drive the gamma rhythms in the human EEG in cognitive healthy elderly subjects but not in mild cognitive impairment (MCI) prodromal to Alzheimer's disease (AD) and in early AD patients. Therefore, this method is proposed to intercept early in the disease course those MCI subjects who are in a pre-symptomatic stage of an already established AD. This prediction index may help the clinician to adopt a better prevention/follow-up strategy. In …

The clinical manifestations of mood and psychotic disorders encompass phasic and transdiagnostic features. The complexity of these symptoms may hamper the development of biomarkers for these diagnostic categories. In the present study, machine learning was employed to cluster their transdiagnostic clinical manifestations as a means of developing state-dependent biomarkers with electroencephalography (EEG). This data-driven clustering classified the items of multiple symptom scales into three symptom domains, which subsequently stratified patients with major depressive, bipolar, and schizophren

Long-term potentiation (LTP)-like plasticity in primary motor cortex (M1) induced by intermittent theta burst stimulation (iTBS) can be enhanced by transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) at a gamma frequency of 70 Hz. Recent evidence suggests that there is some frequency specificity in the effects of tACS on motor function within the midgamma band (60-90 Hz). The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of different tACS frequencies within the gamma band on the neuroplastic response to iTBS. Seventeen healthy young adults performed four experimental sessions, where iTBS was

High-definition transcranial alternating current stimulation (HD-tACS) targeting the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) holds promise for pain management, though its neurobiological mechanisms remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate whether alpha HD-tACS applied to the left DLPFC modulates gamma oscillations to sustain analgesia during capsaicin-induced experimental pain (0.1% Capsaicin cream). Forty-five healthy participants underwent a single-blind, within-subject, sham-controlled protocol. EEG recordings were taken at three key time points: baseline (resting state), 5 minutes po

Alzheimer's disease (AD) imposes a heavy burden on families and society. Rhythmic magnetic stimulation has emerged as a promising non-invasive therapy to mitigate AD-related cognitive decline. In this study, we applied a rhythmic unipolar compound pulsed magnetic field (cPMF; carrier frequency: 40 Hz, repetition rate: 5 Hz, magnetic flux density: 0-20 mT) incorporating both theta and gamma rhythms to evaluate its effects on behavior and neural oscillations in AD mice and to explore the underlying mechanisms. 5xFAD mice received unipolar cPMF stimulation for 1 h/d over 8 consecutive weeks. Indicators for a decrement in vigilance are a slowdown in reaction times and an increase in alpha power in the electroencephalogram in posterior regions of the brain. Transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) is a neuropsychological technique that has been found to interact with intrinsic brain oscillations and is able to enhance cognitive and behavioral performance. Recent studies show that tACS in the gamma frequency range (30-80 Hz) is able to downregulate amplitudes in the alpha frequency range (8-12 Hz), in accordance to the effect referred to as cross-frequency coupling, where

Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) has been suggested as a therapeutic technique for treating patients with disorder of consciousness (DOC). Although studies have reported its benefits for patients, the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms remain unclear. The aim of this study was to measure the effects of SCS on the EEG of patients in a minimally conscious state (MCS), which would allow us to explore the possible workings underpinning of the approach. Resting state EEG was recorded before and immediately after SCS, using various frequencies (5Hz, 20Hz, 50Hz, 70Hz and 100Hz), for 11 patients in
