A 3.7-kg, 3-year-old intact female domestic shorthaired cat was presented with the chief complaint of anorexia and lethargy of 3 days duration with a noticeable decrease in body condition and a large open wound on her ventral caudal abdomen. A diagnosis of acute mastitis with gland abscessation was made. The patient was successfully treated with oral antibiotics and open wound management using surgical debridement and lavage followed by wound dressings using honey.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the clinical course of a cat diagnosed with Fournier's gangrene.
CASE SUMMARY: A 2-year-old castrated male cat was presented to an emergency hospital for evaluation of acute onset of lethargy, mucoid anal discharge, and fever. During hospitalization, with provision of supportive care, an area of necrotizing fasciitis around the prepuce and anus developed and surgical debridement was performed. Severe sepsis developed secondary to the necrotizing fasciitis and the cat was eventually euthanized.

METHODS: From January 1992 to September 2004, 15 patients with scrotum gangrene were treated and their clinical data were analysed. Their ages ranged from 23 to 80 years. Pyoderma gangrenosum is a distinctive, uncommon, ulcerative condition with an associated systemic disease in most cases. The causative mechanism of this disease is still unknown. In this article, we review the pathogenesis of pyoderma gangrenosum, its clinicopathologic picture and the currently available therapeutic alternatives. Associations with systemic disease are also reviewed.

Gangrene of an extremity is very uncommon in measles, but we have encountered 3 cases. One patient had a peripheral variety with gangrene of the toes, while the other 2 had major vessel thrombosis. Evidence from the literature is advanced to support the hypothesis that disseminated intravascular coagulation on an immunological basis may be an important precipitating factor. Treatment is briefly discussed.
