Standardized Evaluation of Cord Gases in Neonates at Risk for Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy.

BACKGROUND: Umbilical-cord acidemia may indicate perinatal asphyxia and places a neonate at increased risk for hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE). Our specific aim was to develop a standardized clinical care pathway, ensuring timely identification and evaluation of neonates with umbilical-cord acidemia at risk for HIE. METHODS: A standardized clinical care pathway to screen inborn neonates ≥36 weeks with abnormal cord blood gases (a pH of ≤7.0 or base deficit of ≥10) for HIE was implemented in January 2016. Abnormal cord blood gases resulted in a direct notification from the laboratory to

Therapeutic Gases and Inhaled Anesthetics as Adjunctive Therapies in Critically Ill Patients.

The administration of exogenous oxygen to support adequate gas exchange is the cornerstone of respiratory care. In the past few years, other gaseous molecules have been introduced in clinical practice to treat the wide variety of physiological derangement seen in critical care patients.Inhaled nitric oxide (NO) is used for its unique selective pulmonary vasodilator effect. Recent studies showed that NO plays a pivotal role in regulating ischemia-reperfusion injury and it has antibacterial and antiviral activity.Helium, due to its low density, is used in patients with upper airway obstruction a

Characterization of a NAPL-contaminated site using the partitioning behavior of noble gases.

Noble gases have been used for oil field exploration due to their partitioning behavior in oil-water systems. However, their application to study sites contaminated with non-aqueous phase liquids (NAPL) has been limited, except for 222Rn, which has been traditionally used as a partitioning tracer for contaminated sites. This study applied natural noble gas components such as 222Rn, He, Ne, Ar, Kr, and Xe to the characterization of a field site contaminated with trichloroethylene (TCE) located in Wonju, Korea. Groundwater at the site showed a maximum level of TCE that exceeded 1000 μg/L, with a

Sensing and capture of toxic and hazardous gases and vapors by metal-organic frameworks.

Toxic and hazardous chemical species are ubiquitous, predominantly emitted by anthropogenic activities, and pose serious risks to human health and the environment. Thus, the sensing and subsequent capture of these chemicals, especially in the gas or vapor phase, are of extreme importance. To this end, metal-organic frameworks have attracted significant interest, as their high porosity and wide tunability make them ideal for both applications. These tailorable framework materials are particularly promising for the specific sensing and capture of targeted chemicals, as they can be designed to fi

[What you should know of the arterial blood gases during the watch].

Gasometry is the measurement of dissolved gases in the blood, by measuring pH, carbon dioxide pressure (pCO(2)), serum bicarbonate (HCO(3-)), and lactate and serum electrolytes: sodium, potassium and chlorine you can make a diagnosis, etiology and treatment in the critically ill patient. The aim is to provide five steps for the interpretation of blood gases by: 1. The definition of acidemia or acidosis, or alkalemia or alkalosis. 2. Defining the metabolic component or respiratory. 3. To determine the anion gap; levels above 15 ± 2 determine other likely causes of excess anions (methanol, uremi

Measured concentrations of combustion gases from the use of unvented gas fireplaces.

UNLABELLED: Measurements of combustion product concentrations were taken in 30 homes where unvented gas fireplaces were used. Measurements of CO, CO(2), NO(x), NO(2) , O(2) (depletion), and water vapor were taken at 1-min interval. The analyzers were calibrated with certified calibration gases for each placement and were in operation for 3-4 days at each home. Measured concentrations were compared to published health-based standards and guidelines. The two combustion gases that exceeded published values were NO(2) and CO. For NO(2) , the Health Canada guideline of 250 ppb (1-h average) was exc

Effects of intermittent hypoxia on blood gases plasma catecholamine and blood pressure.

Obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS) is a disorder characterized by repetitive episodes of complete (apnoea) or partial (hypopnoea) obstruction of airflow during sleep. The severity of OSAS is defined by the apnoea hypopnoea index (AHI) or number of obstructive episodes. An AHI greater than 30 is considered severe, but it can reach values higher than 100 in some patients. Associated to the OSA there is high incidence of cardiovascular and neuro-psychiatric pathologies including systemic hypertension, stroke, cardiac arrhythmias and atherosclerosis, diurnal somnolence, anxiety and depressio

Respiratory health effects of air pollution gases: modification by education and income.

The authors' purpose was to determine whether community income and education modify the effect of gaseous air pollution on respiratory hospitalizations. The authors used daily time-series analyses to test the association between daily respiratory hospitalizations and daily concentrations of ozone, carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, and nitrogen dioxide in 10 large Canadian cities. They calculated the percentage increase in hospitalizations for an increase in each air pollutant that was equivalent in magnitude to its mean value. The effect of nitrogen dioxide was stronger with decreasing levels o

Effects of feeding on arterial blood gases in the American alligator Alligator mississippiensis.

Reptiles habitually ingest large meals at infrequent intervals, leading to changes in acid-base status as the net secretion of acid to the stomach causes a metabolic alkalosis (the alkaline tide). In chronically cannulated and undisturbed amphibians and reptiles, the pH changes in arterial blood are, nevertheless, reduced by a concomitant respiratory acidosis (increased P(CO2) caused by a relative hypoventilation). Alligators (Alligator mississippiensis) have been reported to exhibit exceptionally large increases in plasma [HCO3(-)] following feeding, but these studies were based on blood samp

Persistent asthma after repeated exposure to high concentrations of gases in pulpmills.

This is a clinicopathologic study of three subjects with irritant-induced asthma. They were pulpmill workers who had a history of multiple "gassing" episodes that occurred over a period of years. Persistent symptoms of asthma and nonspecific bronchial hyperresponsiveness and/or variable airflow obstruction occurred after at least one episode of "gassing," resulting in symptoms severe enough to require emergency room treatment. One of the three subjects had normal spirometry values before he entered the pulpmill. Bronchial biopsy done on these subjects showed changes compatible with asthma, inc

Effect of routine fiberoptic bronchoscopy and bronchoalveolar lavage on arterial blood gases.

Effect of conventional fiberoptic bronchoscopy (FOB) procedure (Group A, n = 10) and bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) (Group B, n = 11) on arterial blood gases was studied in 21 patients. A significant fall in arterial oxygen tension (PaO2) with widening of alveolar arterial oxygen gradient D(A-a)O2 was observed during FOB (p < 0.001) and 30 minutes following the procedure (p < 0.001). Bronchoalveolar lavage was also associated with significant fall (p < 0.001) in PaO2 with increased D(A-a)O2 and this fall in PaO2 persisted for 30 minutes after the procedure (p < 0.01). None of the patients receiv

Serum electrolytes and capillary blood gases in the management of hypertrophic pyloric stenosis.

The purpose of this study was to assess whether the concentration of serum chloride and other variables, namely serum sodium, potassium and bicarbonate, can be used to predict metabolic acid-base status in infants with hypertrophic pyloric stenosis (HPS) and to assess whether such a prediction is influenced by the state of hydration. One hundred and sixty-three infants with HPS who had at least one set of serum electrolyte and capillary blood gas estimations performed after admission were studied retrospectively. A further 25 infants who had their electrolyte and blood gases measured after at

Photochemical oxidant pollution and vegetation: effects of mixtures of gases, fog and particles.

Photochemical 'smog' contains mixtures of gases (e.g. ozone, nitrogen dioxide), and dry particles (e.g. nitrates). Intermittent fog in the same geographical area can be acidic with high concentrations of nitric acid. Results from recent field studies in the Los Angeles Basin have emphasized the relative toxicity of these components of photochemical air pollution. Studies have focused on gaseous+fog or gaseous+dry particulate effects on conifers, gaseous+fog effects on crops, and the effects of trace pollutants produced during generation of ozone on crops. Data from these studies indicate that

Cuprophan reuse and intradialytic changes of lung diffusion capacity and blood gases.

The changes in arterial blood gas, pulmonary function tests, leukocyte counts and complement activation were evaluated during first use and subsequent reuse of cuprophan dialyzers. The dialysate buffer was bicarbonate. Reuse of cuprophan dialyzers significantly attenuated the fall in leukocyte counts and the rise in C3a des Arg seen during first use dialysis. First use dialysis also caused a drop in arterial paO2 from 93.0 +/- 12.4 mm Hg to a nadir of 82.8 +/- 12.6 mm Hg at 60 minutes (P less than 0.01). PaO2 levels did not change when reused dialyzers were employed (93.7 +/- 12.2 before dialy

[Contamination of foodstuff by gases from tetrachloroethene emissions from a dry cleaners].

Tetrachloroethene (perchloroethylene) and other volatile organic compounds may contaminate the surroundings of dry-cleaning units. Increased concentrations of tetrachloroethene were found in food, human hair, textiles and dust from a vacuum cleaner in a home situated above a dry-cleaning unit. The concentrations were found to be extremely high in food rich in fat. The analytical procedure for the above-mentioned samples is described.

The influence of heparin on haemodynamics and blood gases during abdominal aortic surgery.

Central haemodynamics and blood gases were measured in 26 patients undergoing elective aortic surgery for atherosclerotic or aneurysmal disease. Recordings were made at seven defined time points, starting before anaesthesia and ending 30 min after declamping of the aorta. The patients were randomly divided into two groups, one receiving heparin at an early stage and the other at a late stage of the operative procedure. A declamping shock phenomenon could be prevented by thorough blood and fluid replacement. After removal of the aortic clamp the cardiac output increased, except in a few patient
