[Development of a method for measuring dissolved reactive phosphorus (DRP) and dissolved ferrous iron in large batch in pore water samples of sediments with micro-volumes].

A method was established to measure the concentrations of dissolved reactive phosphate (DRP) and dissolved ferrous iron (Fe) in micro-volume solution samples through colorimetric determination in large batch using a 384-well Microplate Spectrophotometer. Concentrations of DRP and dissolved Fe were determined by the molybdenum blue and phenanthroline colorimetric methods, respectively. The results showed that the sample consumption used for each parameter was between 20 and 50 microL after dilution, and the detection limits for DRP and dissolved Fe were 0.006 mg x L(-1) and 0.010 mg x L(-1) res

Geologic occurrences of erionite in the United States: an emerging national public health concern for respiratory disease.

Erionite, a mineral series within the zeolite group, is classified as a Group 1 known respiratory carcinogen. This designation resulted from extremely high incidences of mesothelioma discovered in three small villages from the Cappadocia region of Turkey, where the disease was linked to environmental exposures to fibrous forms of erionite. Natural deposits of erionite, including fibrous forms, have been identified in the past in the western United States. Until recently, these occurrences have generally been overlooked as a potential hazard. In the last several years, concerns have emerged reg

Glycine betaine is the main organic osmotic solute in a stratified microbial community in a hypersaline evaporitic gypsum crust.

We have examined the organic osmotic solutes content within the stratified microbial communities in an evaporitic gypsum crust found in an evaporation pond (~194 g/l total dissolved salts) of the salterns of the Israel Salt Company, Eilat. We extracted intracellular solutes from the upper three pigmented layers of the crust: a yellow-orange layer dominated by unicellular cyanobacteria, a green layer with filamentous cyanobacteria, and a layer colored red-purple by purple sulfur bacteria; dense communities of heterotrophic bacteria were present in all layers. The solutes were analyzed by Raman

Comparison of mercury speciation and distribution in the water column and sediments between the algal type zone and the macrophytic type zone in a hypereutrophic lake (Dianchi Lake) in Southwestern China.

During a heavy algal bloom in 2009, we collected lake water, surface sediment, sediment cores and porewater samples from Dianchi Lake to investigate the effect of eutrophication and different aquatic habitats (algal and macrophytic) on mercury (Hg) distribution and speciation in hypereutrophic lake. The total Hg (THg) concentration in the sediment and lake water was substantially elevated compared to uncontaminated lakes and reservoirs. The spatial distribution of THg pointed to waste water discharged from Kunming City as the dominant source of Hg in Dianchi Lake. Despite the high concentratio

The impact of biofilm growth on transport of Escherichia coli O157:H7 in sand.

Understanding the transport behavior, survival, and persistence of pathogens such as Escherichia coli O157:H7 in the subsurface is essential to protection of public health. In this study, the transport of E. coli O157:H7 in a two-dimensional bench-scale sand aquifer system, hereafter referred to as the sandbox, was investigated, with a focus on the impact of biofilm development on E. coli retention and survival. Biofilm growth was initiated through flushing with unsterilized groundwater and addition of glucose, nitrate, and phosphate. Retention of E. coli from an injection test in clean sand,

Caution needed in pretreatment of sediments for refining phosphorus-31 nuclear magnetic resonance analysis: results from a comprehensive assessment of pretreatment with ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid.

Pretreatment with chemicals such as ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) is often used to improve the analysis of sediment P with solution P-31 nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (35P-NMR), but there is a lack of a comprehensive assessment of the methodology. In this study, the effects of EDTA pretreatment on sediment P extracted using a mixture of 0.25 mol L(-1) NaOH and 50 mmol L(-1) EDTA (NaOH-EDTA) were examined with 45 different sediments. The results showed that EDTA pre-extraction decreased the amount of P extracted by NaOH-EDTA when the concentration ratio of sediment Ca to the

Monitoring bioaugmenation with single-well push-pull tests in sediment systems contaminated with trichloroethene.

Bioaugmentation to enhance the rate and extent of reductive dechlorination of chlorinated ethenes was investigated in intermediate ( approximately 1 m) scale physical aquifer models (PAMs) designed to simulate the groundwater flow field near an injection well. Push-pull tests were used to quantify the reductive dechlorination of injected trichloroethene (TCE) and trichlorofluoroethene (TCFE) in prepared sediment packs with and without an added dechlorinating culture containing Dehalococcoides spp. Distribution of the added culture throughout the sediment pack was confirmed by microscopic obser

Selective pressurized liquid extraction of polychlorinated biphenyls in sediment.

A selective pressurized liquid extraction procedure (SPLE) was developed for a fast determination of polychlorinated biphenyls in sediment. The final method was performed at 100 degrees C with heptane/dichloromethane (90:10, v/v) as extraction solvent for 2x5 min. Sulfuric acid impregnated silica was placed downstream of the sample in the extraction cell to remove interfering components. This simultaneous extraction/clean-up was performed in 20 min, with an average congener recovery of 92% compared to a classical 24 h Soxhlet methodology and 2 h of external manual clean-up.

The competitive role of organic carbon and dissolved sulfide in controlling the distribution of mercury in freshwater lake sediments.

The detailed distribution of mercury was studied in sediments and porewaters of two freshwater lakes, which were selected because of the contrasting conditions they present at their respective sediment-water interface (SWI). One lake is characterized by a SWI that remains oxic all year long whereas the other one shows a clear seasonal variation with the evolution of strongly anoxic conditions through the summer season. The results of the study clearly identify the importance of redox conditions on the geochemical behaviour of Hg at the SWI of both lakes but a very limited influence of an oxidi

Land-sea mercury transport through a modified watershed, SE Brazil.

River management has altered the land-sea transport of water, sediments, and chemical compounds with profound impacts on the structure of continental and costal ecosystems. Understanding riverine transport across modified watersheds allow for better assessment of the influence of river management on material fluxes to coastal waters. Here, we assess the quantitative and qualitative aspects of mercury (Hg) transport across a modified watershed by diversion of Paraíba do Sul River waters into Sepetiba Bay, Brazil. We measured concentrations and speciation of Hg in water samples collected at site

A reevaluation of the cultural eutrophication of Lake Okeechobee using multiproxy sediment records.

Lake Okeechobee, the hydrological lynchpin of the Everglades ecosystem, is the subject of an ambitious, multiagency restoration effort aimed at reducing phosphorus inputs and resulting algal blooms and impaired water clarity. This restoration is predicated on returning the lake to something closer to its predisturbance condition, but that goal has been challenged on the premise that the lake has always been eutrophic. The resolution of this debate and the appropriateness of the nutrient reduction goals thus depend on obtaining a reliable sediment record of past limnological conditions--the aim

Flushing submarine canyons.

The continental slope is a steep, narrow fringe separating the coastal zone from the deep ocean. During low sea-level stands, slides and dense, sediment-laden flows erode the outer continental shelf and the continental slope, leading to the formation of submarine canyons that funnel large volumes of sediment and organic matter from shallow regions to the deep ocean(1). During high sea-level stands, such as at present, these canyons still experience occasional sediment gravity flows(2-5), which are usually thought to be triggered by sediment failure or river flooding. Here we present observatio

The geochemistry of mercury in central Amazonian soils developed on the Alter-do-Chão formation of the lower Tapajós River Valley, Pará state, Brazil.

In an oxisol-spodosol system developed on the terrestrial surface of the lower Tapajós Valley, the determination of total mercury (Hg), organic carbon (C), iron and aluminum oxy-hydroxide (Fe(cdb) and Al(cdb)) concentrations in the surface soil horizons are used to characterise the geochemical processes controlling the accumulation of Hg in soils under natural vegetation cover and in deforested and cultivated sites. Oxisols from the plateau have homogeneous and relatively high background Hg contents and burdens constituting an important natural reservoir of Hg for the region (90-210 ng/g dry w

Removal of tetrachloroethylene in an anaerobic column bioreactor.

Removal of tetrachloroethylene (perchloroethylene; C2Cl4) by microbial consortia from two sites with different C2Cl4 exposure histories was examined in a bench-scale anaerobic column bioreactor. It was hypothesized that optimal removal would be observed in the reactor packed with sediments having an extensive exposure history. Microbial consortia were enriched from hyporheic-zone (HZ) sediments from the Portneuf aquifer near Pocatello, Idaho, and from industrial-zone (IZ) sediments from a highly contaminated aquifer in Portland, Oregon. Lactate and acetate were the electron donors during exper

[Mechanisms underlying the regulations of wetland vegetation on phosphorus migration and transformation at the sediment-water interface:A review.].

The sediment-water interface is a key zone for the release, retention, and transformation of internal phosphorus (P) in wetlands. Wetland vegetation can alter the source-sink status of P at this interface by modifying hydrodynamic conditions, rhizosphere redox environments, plant uptake, and microbial processes. We synthesized the mechanisms by which wetland vegetation regulates P transport and transformation across the sediment-water interface, including physical sediment stabilization, radial oxygen loss, and iron-phosphorus coupling, plant-microbe interactions, and litter decomposition feed
