Francisella tularensis Subspecies holarctica and Tularemia in Germany.

Tularemia is a zoonotic disease caused by Francisella tularensis a small, pleomorphic, facultative intracellular bacterium. In Europe, infections in animals and humans are caused mainly by Francisella tularensis subspecies holarctica. Humans can be exposed to the pathogen directly and indirectly through contact with sick animals, carcasses, mosquitoes and ticks, environmental sources such as contaminated water or soil, and food. So far, F. tularensis subsp. holarctica is the only Francisella species known to cause tularemia in Germany. On the basis of surveillance data, outbreak investigations…

[Pruritus in Germany-a Google search engine analysis].

BACKGROUND: Because affected persons often do not visit a doctor, the prevalence of chronic and acute pruritus in the general population is difficult to determine. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study is to estimate the frequency and the most common locations of pruritus in German internet users, who-with 62.4 million persons-represent a large majority of the German population, by analysing the Google search volume. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Relevant keywords for the subject "pruritus" were identified and analysed using the Google AdWords Keyword Planner. The assessment period was January 2015 to

Analgesic prescribing patterns of dental practitioners in Germany.

PURPOSE: To analyze the prescribing patterns of analgesics by dentists in Germany during an investigation period of five years in comparison to analgesic prescriptions by physicians and in relation to international prescribing data. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We analyzed nationwide data of all prescriptions of analgesics and antiphlogistics (except strong opioids) on the basis of the annual reports of the German statutory health insurances from 2012 to 2016. The types of analgesics, the number of prescriptions and the prescribed 'defined daily doses' (DDD) itemized by dentists and physicians were…

Multicentre approach to epidemiological aspects of craniosynostosis in Germany.

We know of no current published data on the prevalence of craniosynostosis in Germany, so our objective in this study was to contribute to the limited knowledge of its epidemiology by assessing time trends, the frequency of prenatal diagnosis, and the timing of diagnosis and treatment. Data were collected in Saxony-Anhalt during the period 2000-17, and we designed a retrospective multicentre cohort study. The prevalence was 4.8 cases of craniosynostosis/10 000 births, and did not increase during that time. We compared the data of 91 patients with those of 273 controls. There were 75 boys and 1…

Epidemiology of Adult Soft-Tissue Sarcomas in Germany.

We conducted a retrospective cohort study using data compiled from the regional German cancer registries by the Centre for Cancer Registry Data (ZfKD) at the Robert Koch Institut (RKI) to describe the epidemiology of adult soft-tissue sarcomas (STS) in Germany in 2003-2012, focusing on advanced STS. We identified 33,803 incident adult cases of STS (other than the Kaposi sarcoma and gastrointestinal stromal tumors). The incidence of STS was 6.05 (95% confidence interval (CI), 5.82-6.29) per 100,000 in 2012 (4,079 cases). During 2003-2012, the most common histologic categories were leiomyosarcom…

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) seroprevalence in the adult population of Germany.

BACKGROUND: Infection with cytomegalovirus (CMV) remains asymptomatic in most immunocompetent hosts, but is the leading cause of congenital viral infection worldwide and can be life-threatening in immunocompromised individuals. We aimed to assess CMV seroprevalence in a nationally representative sample of adults in Germany and to identify sociodemographic factors associated with CMV seropositivity. METHODS: Blood samples from 6552 participants (18-79 years) of the "German National Health Interview and Examination Survey 1998", a population-based sample of the adult population in Germany, were…

High probability of comorbidities in bronchial asthma in Germany.

UNLABELLED: Clinical experience has shown that allergic and non-allergic respiratory, metabolic, mental, and cardiovascular disorders sometimes coexist with bronchial asthma. However, no study has been carried out that calculates the chance of manifestation of these disorders with bronchial asthma in Saarland and Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. Using ICD10 diagnoses from health care institutions, the present study systematically analyzed the co-prevalence and odds ratios of comorbidities in the asthma population in Germany. The odds ratios were adjusted for age and sex for all comorbidities for…

The impact of age on psoriasis health care in Germany.

INTRODUCTION: Inequality between age groups has been demonstrated in the prescription of biologics, yet systematic real-world data about age-related differences in psoriasis care are missing. OBJECTIVE: To investigate disparities in psoriasis characteristics by age groups and to identify potential impact on psoriasis health care. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Data analysis included 3615 patients from the German psoriasis registry PsoBest, which observes adult patients with moderate-to-severe psoriasis or psoriatic arthritis (PsA) on systemic treatment over a time period of 10 years. RESULTS: With 2

[Quality improvement in acute pain management in Germany].

In Germany, different quality management approaches in postoperative pain management have been established. In this context, quality is distinguished into structure quality (e.g. personnel and equipment resources), process quality (e. g. standardized treatment schemes) and outcome quality (e.g. pain intensity, side effects, satisfaction). While guidelines and recommendations help to set up evidence based structures and processes and offer support for decision making, benchmark projects offer insights in real life conditions. By use of feedback and benchmarking tools, they can be used for outco…

Fertility and Pregnancy in Primary Adrenal Insufficiency in Germany.

Autoimmune adrenalitis (AA) and congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) are the most common reasons for acquired and monogenetic primary adrenal insufficiency. Both concern women in their fertile years. The aim of the work was to examine fertility rates, pregnancy outcome, and children's characteristics in AA and CAH patients in 2 German endocrine centers. One hundred and fifty-eight women were contacted. Thirty-nine patients with CAH due to 21-hydroxlase deficiency and 54 AA patients agreed and were included. Information about course and outcome of pregnancies was obtained by questionnaire and t

Host-feeding patterns of mosquito species in Germany.

BACKGROUND: Mosquito-borne pathogens are of growing importance in many countries of Europe including Germany. At the same time, the transmission cycles of most mosquito-borne pathogens (e.g. viruses or filarial parasites) are not completely understood. There is especially a lack of knowledge about the vector capacity of the different mosquito species, which is strongly influenced by their host-feeding patterns. While this kind of information is important to identify the relevant vector species, e.g. to direct efficient control measures, studies about the host-feeding patterns of mosquito speci…

The paradigm shift in cervical cancer screening in Germany.

With the adoption of the Cancer Screening and Registration Law (KFRG, 2013) based on the National Cancer Plan, the so far opportunistic cervical cancer screening in Germany is to be converted to an organized screening program. This decision in Germany is consistent with the new EU Guidelines and, in anticipation of the upcoming German S3 guideline for cervical cancer screening.

Fascioloides magna--epizootiology in a deer farm in Germany.

After initial observations of suspicious cases in 2009, the occurrence of Fascioloides (F.) magna in deer of a deer farm located in northeastern Bavaria, Germany, at the border to the Czech Republic was confirmed in autumn 2011. In March 2012, the deer were treated for fascioloidosis with triclabendazole. To monitor the epizootiology of fascioloidosis in the farm, 80-100 faecal samples were examined for Fascioloides eggs at monthly intervals from June 2012 to June 2013 inclusive. In addition, livers of 27 red deer and one sika deer collected during winter 2012/2013 were examined for gross lesi…

[Vesicovaginal fistula. Incidence, etiology and phenomenology in Germany].

BACKGROUND: Vesicovaginal fistulae are much more common in developing countries along the equatorial fistula belt than in industrialized countries. However, although the classical obstetric fistula caused by lack of medical support through pregnancy and delivery in adolescent primiparae has almost vanished in Germany, we are now facing new and predominantly iatrogenic variants. Increasing frequency of gynecological surgery as well as pelvic radiation, forgotten vaginal foreign bodies, or uninhibited cancer growth are the modern causes for vesicovaginal fistula in elderly patients. Comorbiditie…
