A Stretchable and Biocompatible Electrode Array-Chip System for Real-Time Hand Gesture Classification.

Human-machine interfaces demand soft bioelectronic systems capable of acquiring high-fidelity electrophysiological signals while maintaining mechanical compliance comparable to human skin. Here, we report a stretchable and conductive electrode array based on a PEDOT:PSS composite modified with Poloxamer and polar solvents. The synergistic doping strategy enhanced mechanical compliance, reduced impedance, and improved conformability, enabling stable acquisition of diverse electrophysiological biosignals. To realize a practical bioelectronic system, the electrode array was integrated with a cust

Fine-grained multi-level gesture recognition based on a stretchable multichannel ultrasonic device.

Discrete gesture recognition provides a direct output form for command-based human-machine interaction, while fine-grained multi-level recognition can expand command capacity by mapping subtle graded finger movements to distinct commands or different levels of the same command, thereby reducing the need for large or repetitive hand gestures. However, reliably distinguishing fine-grained multi-level gestures remains challenging. Here, we present a stretchable multichannel ultrasonic device comprising four functional sites and sixteen piezoelectric modules. Its fan-shaped substrate stretches up

Real-time gesture mapping system for a 15-DOF palm-scale bionic manipulator.

In this paper, a low-cost, high-precision, high-degree-of-freedom intelligent manipulator was developed. Specifically, a 15-DOF palm-scale bionic manipulator integrated with a vision-based gesture mapping framework is presented. The system consists of a power management module, palm module, joint module, and gesture recognition module, and can be controlled via smart devices. Experimental results demonstrate gesture-driven control with an average end-to-end response time of approximately 2s, including perception, communication, and execution delays. In addition, the system is lightweight and c

Wrist-Wearable sEMG Gesture Recognition System Based on ThinNet Lightweight Neural Network.

Wearable surface electromyography (sEMG)-based gesture recognition enables intuitive human-machine interaction, but practical deployment is often limited by hardware constraints, model complexity, and inter-subject variability. In this study, we developed a high-performance wrist-worn sEMG acquisition system and a lightweight neural network, ThinNet, to achieve efficient and accurate gesture recognition. The wristband features a ring-shaped differential electrode array and embedded filtering modules, achieving a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of 66.96 dB, significantly higher than commercial devi

InGesture: An eight-class inertial sensor dataset for fluid intake and hand-gesture recognition.

Recognizing fine-grained hand and arm gestures, especially those that occur naturally in daily activities, remains a challenge in wearable-based human activity recognition. This dataset supports fine-grained gesture recognition using wearable inertial sensors, with a focus on distinguishing subtle daily activities such as liquid ingestion and similar upper-body gestures. Fifty volunteers participated in controlled recording sessions, each performing predefined gestures including answering a phone call, scratching the head, adjusting glasses, passing the hand over the face, holding the chin, an

Planum temporale asymmetry in newborn monkeys predicts the future development of gestural communication's handedness.

The planum temporale (PT), a key language area, is specialized in the left hemisphere in prelinguistic infants and considered as a marker of the pre-wired language-ready brain. However, studies have reported a similar structural PT left-asymmetry not only in various adult non-human primates, but also in newborn baboons. Its shared functional links with language are not fully understood. Here we demonstrate using previously obtained MRI data that early detection of PT left-asymmetry among 27 newborn baboons (Papio anubis, age range of 4 days to 2 months) predicts the future development of right

Hand gesture performance is impaired in major depressive disorder: A matter of working memory performance?

OBJECTIVE: Individuals with depression exhibit numerous interpersonal deficits. As effective use of gestures is critical for social communication, it is possible that depressed individuals' interpersonal deficits may be due to deficits in gesture performance. The present study thus compared gesture performance of depressed patients and controls and examined whether these deficits relate to cognitive and other domains of dysfunction. METHODS: Gesture performance was evaluated in 30 depressed patients and 30 controls using the Test of Upper Limb Apraxia (TULIA). Clinical rating scales were asse

Neuropsychological basis of impaired gesture imitations in patients with Alzheimer's disease and dementia with Lewy bodies.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to examine the neuropsychological factors that may be related to the impaired gesture imitations in patients with dementia. METHODS: The imitation of unilateral finger and bimanual gestures was evaluated in 162 patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and 103 patients with dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB). The relationships of gesture imitation performance to global cognition, semantic fluency, phonemic fluency, figure copying, clock drawing, and trail-making test part A (TMT-A) scores were examined. RESULTS: Mean scores for unilateral finger imitation we

Hybrid-Flexible Bimodal Sensing Wearable Glove System for Complex Hand Gesture Recognition.

As 5G communication technology allows for speedier access to extended information and knowledge, a more sophisticated human-machine interface beyond touchscreens and keyboards is necessary to improve the communication bandwidth and overcome the interfacing barrier. However, the full extent of human interaction beyond operation dexterity, spatial awareness, sensory feedback, and collaborative capability to be replicated completely remains a challenge. Here, we demonstrate a hybrid-flexible wearable system, consisting of simple bimodal capacitive sensors and a customized low power interface circ

Phonological characteristics of novel gesture production in children with developmental language disorder: Longitudinal findings.

Children with developmental language disorder (DLD; aka specific language impairment) are characterized based on deficits in language, especially morphosyntax, in the absence of other explanatory conditions. However, deficits in speech production, as well as fine and gross motor skill, have also been observed, implicating both the linguistic and motor systems. Situated at the intersection of these domains, and providing insight into both, is manual gesture. In the current work, we asked whether children with DLD showed phonological deficits in the production of novel gestures and whether gestu

A Novel Gesture Recognition System Based on CSI Extracted from a Smartphone with Nexmon Firmware.

In this paper, we propose a novel gesture recognition system based on a smartphone. Due to the limitation of Channel State Information (CSI) extraction equipment, existing WiFi-based gesture recognition is limited to the microcomputer terminal equipped with Intel 5300 or Atheros 9580 network cards. Therefore, accurate gesture recognition can only be performed in an area relatively fixed to the transceiver link. The new gesture recognition system proposed by us breaks this limitation. First, we use nexmon firmware to obtain 256 CSI subcarriers from the bottom layer of the smartphone in IEEE 802

Effect of body-part specificity and meaning in gesture imitation in left hemisphere stroke patients.

Previous studies showed that imitation of finger and hand/arm gestures could be differentially impaired after brain damage. However, so far, the interaction between gesture meaning and body part in imitation deficits has not been fully assessed. In the present study, we aimed at filling this gap by testing 36 unilateral left brain-damaged patients with and without apraxia (20 apraxics), and 29 healthy controls on an imitation task of either finger or hand/arm meaningful (MF) gestures and meaningless (ML) movements, using a large sample of stimuli and controlling for the composition of the expe

Robot Learning of Assistive Manipulation Tasks by Demonstration via Head Gesture-based Interface.

Assistive robotic manipulators have the potential to support the lives of people suffering from severe motor impairments. They can support individuals with disabilities to independently perform daily living activities, such as drinking, eating, manipulation tasks, and opening doors. An attractive solution is to enable motor impaired users to teach a robot by providing demonstrations of daily living tasks. The user controls the robot 'manually' with an intuitive human-robot interface to provide demonstration, which is followed by the robot learning of the performed task. However, the control of

Improving fine motor function after brain injury using gesture recognition biofeedback.

PURPOSE: We developed a gesture recognition biofeedback (GRB) device for improving fine motor function in persons with brain injury using surface muscle pressures of the forearm to provide real-time visual biofeedback. The GRB apparatus is easy to don by moderately impaired users and does not require precise placement of sensors. METHOD: The efficacy of GRB training with each subject was assessed by comparing its effectiveness against standard repetitive training without feedback. The outcome was measured using a nine-hole peg test (HPT) administered before and after each condition, in a cros

Gesture subtype-dependent left lateralization of praxis planning: an event-related fMRI study.

Ideomotor apraxia is a disorder mainly of praxis planning, and the deficit is typically more evident in pantomiming transitive (tool related) than intransitive (communicative) gestures. The goal of the present study was to assess differential hemispheric lateralization of praxis production using event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging. Voxel-based analysis demonstrated significant activations in posterior parietal cortex (PPC) and premotor cortex (PMC) association areas, which were predominantly left hemispheric, regardless of whether planning occurred for right or left hand transi

A case study of gesturally cued naming in aphasia: dominant versus nondominant hand training.

Gestural plus verbal facilitation of naming was investigated in an aphasic right handed adult with apraxia and hemisensory deficit but no hemiplegia secondary to a left hemisphere lesion. An alternating treatments design was followed in combined gesture/speech training of picture naming to compare speech facilitation with dominant vs. nondominant hand iconic gesturing. A small but consistent facilitation effect was observed for naming associated with verbal plus left hand gestural training over naming of items trained in association with verbal plus right hand gesturing. This same pattern of g

The use of gestures in book reading and play situations related to vocabulary in young children with cochlear implants.

Gestures are essential in early language development. We investigate the use of gestures in children with cochlear implants (CIs), with a particular focus on deictic, iconic, and conventional gestures. The aim is to understand how the use of gestures in everyday interactions relates to age, vocabulary testing results, and language development reported by parents. Seven children with CIs, aged 27-39 months, participated in the study. The children's use of gestures was analysed in caregivers' video recordings of daily life interactions. The Picture Naming Game was used to test vocabulary. The Sw

Recovery of gestures for persons with severe non-fluent aphasia and limb apraxia: A long-term follow-up study.

Persons with severe non-fluent aphasia would benefit from using gestures to substitute for their absent powers of speech. The use of gestures, however, is challenging for persons with aphasia and concomitant limb apraxia. Research on the long-term recovery of gestures is scant, and it is unclear whether gesture performance can show recovery over time. This study evaluated the recovery of emblems and tool use pantomimes of persons with severe non-fluent aphasia and limb apraxia after a left hemisphere stroke. The Florida Apraxia Screening Test-Revised (FAST-R) was used for measurements. The tes

Rate of Communicative Gestures and Developmental Outcomes in Toddlers With and Without Autism Spectrum Disorder During a Home Observation.

Purpose Most toddlers with autism spectrum disorder and other developmental delays receive early intervention at home and may not participate in a clinic-based communication evaluation. However, there is limited research that has prospectively examined communication in very young children with and without autism in a home-based setting. This study used granular observational coding to document the communicative acts performed by toddlers with autism, developmental delay, and typical development in the home environment. Method Children were selected from the archival database of the FIRST WORDS

Comprehension of the communicative intent behind pointing and gazing gestures by young children with Williams syndrome or Down syndrome.

PURPOSE: In this study, the authors examined the ability of preschoolers with Williams syndrome (WS) or Down syndrome (DS) to infer communicative intent as expressed through gestures (pointing and eye-gaze shift). METHOD: Participants were given a communicative or noncommunicative cue involving pointing or gaze shifting in the context of a hiding game. Each child completed 4 conditions formed by crossing Communicative Style (communicative vs. noncommunicative) and Gesture (point vs. gaze shift). RESULTS: At the group level, children in both groups located the toy significantly more often tha
