INTRODUCTION: Research related to the result of patients with mild traumatic brain injury and the role of percutaneous oxygen saturation (SpO2) level is rarely reported. Our study investigated the relationship between SpO2 and the 30- and 90-day mortality among patients with mild TBI.
METHODS: A total of 1027 patients with mild TBI [Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) > 12] were enrolled from the Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care (MIMIC-III) database. The patients were classified into low-SpO2 (< 95%), moderate-SpO2 (95-98%), and high-SpO2 groups (> 98%). With 30- and 90-day mortality rates as…

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) represents a heterogenous spectrum of disease. It is essential to rapidly assess a patient's neurologic status and implement measures to prevent secondary brain injury. Intracranial hypertension, a common sequela of TBI, is managed in a tiered and systematic fashion, starting with the least invasive and moving toward the most invasive. TBI has long-lasting effects on patients and their families and represents a substantial financial and social influence on society. Research regarding the prognosis and treatment of TBI is essential to limit the influence of this wid

BACKGROUND: The rates of emergency neurosurgery in traumatic brain injury (TBI) patients vary between populations and trauma centers. In planning acute TBI treatment, knowledge about rates and incidence of emergency neurosurgery at the population level is of importance for organization and planning of specialized health care services. This study aimed to present incidence rates and patient characteristics for the most common TBI-related emergency neurosurgical procedures.
METHODS: Oslo University Hospital is the only trauma center with neurosurgical services in Southeast Norway, which has a p

Moderate traumatic brain injury (mTBI) is a heterogeneous entity that is poorly defined in the literature. Patients with mTBI have a high ra … f contusion (frontal and temporal contusions), Injury Severity Score >13, D-dimer level >11.4 mg/L, Glasgow Coma Scale score ≤10, and platelet count ≤152 × 109/L. A prediction model was established and was shown as a nomogram. Using bootstrapping, internal validation showed that the C-statistic of the prediction model was 0.881 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.849-0 …

BACKGROUND: Apoptotic cell death leads to secondary brain injury after spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage (SIH). There is an association between serum caspase-3 levels and late mortality (at 6 months) in patients with SIH in basal ganglia. The new objective of this study was to determine whether there exists an association between serum caspase-3 levels and early mortality (at 30 days) in patients with SIH at different sites and not only in basal ganglia.
METHODS: Patients with severe supratentorial SIH (defined as Glasgow Coma Scale < 9) admitted in 6 Spanish hospitals were included in thi…

PURPOSE: Apoptotic changes in brain samples have been found in haematoma areas of patients with spontaneous intracerebral haemorrhage (SIH) undergoing surgical haematoma evacuation. However, circulating caspase-8 concentrations in SIH patients have not been described. Thus, we carried out this study with the aim to explore whether there is an association of circulating caspase-8 concentrations and mortality in patients with SIH.
METHODS: We included patients with severe and supratentorial SIH. We established that the SIH was severe if Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) was lower than 9. Intensive Care …

Parkinson's disease (PD) is the most common cause of parkinsonism, a clinical syndrome that includes bradykinesia, tremor, and postural inst … tremor. Seven days after the onset of symptoms, because of the persistence of mandibular tremor and Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) score of 4, therapy with L-DOPA/benserazide was started, which resulted in gradual reduction of symptoms and complete recovery of consciousness. This could be the first report of PD appearing only 12 days after an SCI in the acute stage. Early …

PURPOSE: The aim of the current study was to investigate the risk factors for post-traumatic epilepsy (PTE) in a large cohort of patients after severe non-penetrating civilian traumatic brain injury (TBI).
METHODS: This was a longitudinal study. All patients with a severe non-penetrating TBI, who were admitted at the neuro-intensive care unit of Shahid Rajaee Trauma Hospital, affiliated with Shiraz University of Medical Sciences, Shiraz, Iran, from 2015 until 2019, were studied. Severe TBI was defined as a Glasgow Coma Scale-Motor score below six. Post-traumatic epilepsy was defined as any se…

OBJECTIVES: To determine the predicting demographic, clinical and radiological factors for neurosurgical intervention in complicated mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) patients.
METHODS: Design: retrospective multicenter cohort study. Accidental hanging in children, although uncommon, has been reported worldwide. We report a case of a toddler who was brought to our hospital with an alleged history of hanging with his head trapped in-between the railings of a balcony. He became unconscious and developed seizures secondary to asphyxial injury and survived. Hanging is an important cause of homicidal and suicidal injury in adults, but in children, it is usually accidental, leading to death because of asphyxia as a result of partial or complete hanging. There is paucity of data in Indian literature regarding accidental hanging i

Capabilities and limitations of ASV mode in TBI patients are studied. 12 patients with severe TBI were enrolled in the study. ICP, MAP, CPP were monitored in all the patients. Cerebral regional blood flow was monitored by thermal diffusion in four patients. Hamilton G5 ventilator was used for mechanical ventilation and respiratory monitoring in all cases. Starting mode of mechanical ventilation was ASV with 100% mechanical substitution. The patient was regarded as ASV-nonresponder and switched to another mode when normoventilation was not possible with any percent of respiratory substitution.

AIM OF THE STUDY: The purpose of this retrospective study was to review and discuss the outcome of surgical management and other clinical predictors influencing the prognosis of war missile penetrating brain injuries.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: To determine clinical predictors that influence the prognosis of war missile penetrating brain injury, 126 surgically treated patients who had sustained such an injury during the two-year period of war in Croatia (1991-1993) were retrospectively analyzed. Investigated clinical features were: Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) score on admission; extent of brain injur…
