Nitrous oxide (N2O) is a greenhouse gas (GHG) with ozone-depleting effects. It is a relatively minor, but important, measurable, and remediable part of healthcare's contribution to global warming. Anaesthetists became aware of the GHG emissions associated with their daily work practices, particularly inhalation agents including N2O, well before other clinicians. However, only relatively recent research indicates that a significant amount of N2O is leaked before patient care, representing a much larger proportion of associated GHG emissions than clinical use. In addition, there are other source…

Terrestrial ecosystem respiration increases exponentially with temperature, constituting a positive feedback loop accelerating global warming. However, the response of ecosystem respiration to temperature strongly depends on water availability, yet where and when the water effects are important, is presently poorly constrained, introducing uncertainties in climate-carbon cycle feedback projections. Here, we disentangle the effects of temperature and precipitation (a proxy for water availability) on ecosystem respiration by analysing eddy covariance CO2 flux measurements across 212 globally dis…

In the past decades, nocturnal temperatures have been playing a disproportionate role in the global warming of the planet. Yet, they remain a neglected factor in studies assessing the impact of global warming on natural populations. Here, we question whether an intense augmentation of nocturnal temperatures is beneficial or deleterious to ectotherms. Physiological performance is influenced by thermal conditions in ectotherms and an increase in temperature by only 2°C is sufficient to induce a disproportionate increase in metabolic expenditure. Warmer nights may expand ectotherms' species therm…

Polymorphisms for melanic form of insects may provide various selective advantages. However, melanic alleles may have significant/subtle pleiotrophic "costs." Several potential pleiotrophic effects of the W (=Y)-linked melanism gene in Papilio glaucus L. (Lepidoptera) showed no costs for melanic versus yellow in adult size, oviposition preferences, fecundity, egg viability, larval survival/growth rates, cold stress tolerance, or postdiapause emergence times. Sexual selection (males choosing yellow rather than mimetic dark females) had been suggested to provide a balanced polymorphism in P. gla

The rate of global warming has accelerated over the past 50 years. Increasing surface temperature is melting glaciers and raising the sea level. More flooding, droughts, hurricanes, and heat waves are being reported. Accelerated changes in climate are already affecting human health, in part by altering the epidemiology of climate-sensitive pathogens. In particular, climate change may alter the incidence and severity of respiratory infections by affecting vectors and host immune responses. Certain respiratory infections, such as avian influenza and coccidioidomycosis, are occurring in locations…

Modern industrial societies have profoundly transformed our environment. Climate change - particularly global warming - and pollution, whether atmospheric or chemical and present in water and food, exert detrimental effects on both human and animal health. In particular, alterations in endocrine function have been reported. This narrative review summarizes current knowledge on the effects of global warming and environmental pollution on the function of three glands under hypothalamic-pituitary control: the adrenal cortex, the thyroid gland, and the gonads.

Boreal peatlands are increasingly vulnerable to wildfires as climate change continues accelerating. Fires consume substantial quantities of organic soils and rapidly transfer large stocks of terrestrial carbon to the atmosphere. Herein, we quantify the minimum environmental temperature from -45 °C to 45 °C that allows the moist peat to smolder, as the fire threshold of peatlands. We then apply a typical vertical soil temperature profile to estimate the future depth of burn and carbon emissions from boreal peatland fires under the impact of global warming. If the boreal region continues warming…

Seagrass meadows play vital ecological roles in the marine ecosystem. Global climate change poses considerable threats to seagrass survival. However, it is unclear how seagrass and its associated bacteria will respond under future complex climate change scenarios. This study explored the effects of ocean warming (+2 °C) and ocean acidification (-0.4 units) on seagrass physiological indexes and bacterial communities (sediment and rhizosphere bacteria) of the seagrass Thalassia hemprichii during an experimental exposure of 30 days. Results demonstrated that the synergistic effect of ocean warmin

Tropical cyclone (TC) stalling refers to a storm wandering within a relatively small region. When TC stalling occurs, localized accumulated damage can increase substantially. However, the understanding of this special behavior globally, especially its response to climate warming, remains limited. Here, we provide a comprehensive global analysis of TC stalling and its response to climate warming, utilizing both observational data and climate model simulations. Our results reveal a distinct hemispheric asymmetry, showing that basins in the Southern Hemisphere are more prone to TC stalling than t

Warming and elevated CO2 (eCO2) are two potentially opposing climate-carbon (C) feedback mechanisms that modulate the magnitude of the land C sink, with warming decreasing and eCO2 increasing C sequestration. However, their net effect on soil organic C (SOC)-the largest terrestrial C stock-remains uncertain. Here, we quantify how warming, eCO2, and their interactions influence SOC by using 5558 paired observations from 1392 global studies across ecosystem types. Our study shows that warming reduces SOC by 8.0%, primarily by suppressing aboveground C inputs (-1.0%) and decreasing microbial C us

Globally, under a scenario assuming a fixed baseline, MHWs' additional biomass decline increases with GWL at a rate ranging from 1.3% to 6.7% biomass loss per Celsius degree of warming, according to best-to-wors …

Thermal performance curves are widely used to predict ectothermic responses to climate warming but are less effective for predicting endotherm performance across environmental conditions because thermoregulation often decouples body temperature from ambient temperature. We develop theory and provide empirical evidence for performance curves in endotherms structured by net sensible heat flux (Q), an integrative index of thermoregulatory imbalance. Using biophysical simulations in tree swallows, we show that performance varies predictably with Q (which we term "QPCs"), thereby explaining variati

BACKGROUND: Climate warming can strongly influence alpine plant physiology, but the leaf-level responses of dominant alpine meadow species to warming may vary across elevation and growing-season stages. These spatial and seasonal patterns remain insufficiently known.
RESULTS: We examined the physiological responses of Kobresia pygmaea on the northeastern Qinghai-Tibet Plateau to long-term passive open-top chamber (OTC) warming across four elevations (3691, 3786, 3981, and 4131 m a.s.l.) from July to September. Across all sites and months, OTC warming increased mean near-surface air temperatur

Lyme disease, the most common vector-borne illness in the United States, is increasingly affecting regions beyond historically endemic areas. Warming temperatures and evolving ecosystems have contributed to the expansion of tick populations and altered seasonal activity, raising the likelihood of human exposure in areas previously considered low-risk. Clinicians must maintain a high index of suspicion for Lyme disease, even in patients without traditional geographic exposure. This article reviews the impact of environmental changes on the distribution and epidemiology of Lyme disease. It also

INTRODUCTION: Heat exposure and heatwaves are becoming more frequent and prolonged due to global warming. Heat exposure poses a significant potential risk for respiratory diseases. However, a comprehensive synthesis of existing evidence on the health impacts of heat exposure on respiratory diseases is lacking. This review aims to address this knowledge gap.
METHODS: The PubMed, Scopus, Embase, and Web of Science databases were searched for reviews examining the impact of heat exposure on respiratory-related mortality and morbidity, as well as on respiratory diseases such as asthma, pneumonia,…

Globally, more than 100 countries have adopted net-zero targets. Most studies agree on how this increases the chance of keeping end-of-century global warming below 2°C. However, they typically make assumptions about net-zero targets that do not capture uncertainties related to gas coverage, sector coverage, sinks, and removals. This study aims to analyze the impact of many uncertainty factors on the projected greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050 for major emitting countries following their net-zero pathways, and their aggregate impact on global GHG emissions. Global emission projections rang…

The Permian-Triassic Mass Extinction (PTME), the most severe crisis of the Phanerozoic, has been attributed to intense global warming triggered by Siberian Traps volcanism. However, it remains unclear why super-greenhouse conditions persisted for around five million years after the volcanic episode, with one possibility being that the slow recovery of plants limited carbon sequestration. Here we use fossil occurrences and lithological indicators of climate to reconstruct spatio-temporal maps of plant productivity changes through the PTME and employ climate-biogeochemical modelling to investiga…
