Oncologic Outcomes of Salvage Surgery in Recurrent Oral Tongue Squamous Cell Carcinoma.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine the oncologic outcomes and identify prognostic factors in patients undergoing salvage glossectomy for recurrent oral tongue squamous cell carcinoma (OTSCC). METHODS: A retrospective chart review was conducted encompassing all patients who underwent salvage oral glossectomy out of 259 individuals undergoing oral glossectomy at a tertiary academic center. Inclusion criteria comprised patients who met the following conditions: 1) biopsy-proven oral tongue recurrence, 2) salvage glossectomy performed with curative intent, 3) availability of imaging records…

[Retrospective study on cancer of the base of the tongue].

From Feb. 1962 to Feb. 1982, 54 patients with cancer of the base of tongue were treated in our hospital. There were 44 squamous cell carcino … be carried out. The defect can be repaired using skin or myocutaneous flaps. In extensive lesions, glossectomy plus laryngectomy should be considered. For the healthy and young patients, the lesions of the base of tongue together with a part of the larynx should be extirpated but for the older man, selective glossectomy is advised.

Preoperative plasma fibrinogen predicts cervical metastasis in patients with stage I/II carcinoma of the tongue.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the association of preoperative plasma fibrinogen levels with clinico-pathological parameters and disease-free survival in patients with oral tongue squamous cell carcinoma (OTSCC). We retrospectively studied 76 patients with OTSCC who underwent a partial glossectomy only, at a single centre, between 1996 and 2007. Among the 76 patients, 30 eventually developed cervical metastasis. Preoperative plasma fibrinogen levels were determined and correlated with clinico-pathological findings by t-test or analysis of variance methods. Univariate and multivariate an…

Lingual Malignant Peripheral Nerve Sheath Tumor in a Chinese Pug Dog.

A 9-year-old spayed/female Chinese Pug dog presented for evaluation of a mass located on the rostral aspect of the tongue. An incisional biopsy was acquired, submitted, and interpreted as a possible granular cell tumor based on hematoxylin and eosin, and periodic acid Schiff histopathologic staining characteristics. The diagnosis was supported by immunohistochemical evaluation that was positive for S-100, vimentin, and neuron-specific enolase. Based on the absence of mitotic figures in the incisional biopsy, a partial glossectomy was performed with gross margins of at least 1-cm. The excisiona…

Surgical management of the hypopharyngeal airway in sleep disordered breathing.

The etiology of sleep disordered breathing is collapse or obstruction of the upper airway during sleep. This obstruction may be localized to … tal mandibular osteotomy and gengioglossus advancement, hyoid myotomy and suspension, laser midline glossectomy, lingualplasty, partial glossectomy, and maxillomandibular advancement surgery. The Riley-Powell-Stanford Surgical Protocol has proven to be an effective and safe method for controlling upper airway collapse in sleep disordered breathing.

Rehabilitation of the face in patients with Down's syndrome.

Fifty patients with Down's syndrome underwent surgery for improvement of the facial stigmata. Partial glossectomy, lateral canthoplasty, and nose, cheek, and chin augmentation were the common procedures. With a follow-up of 18 to 24 months, the results were recorded by a multidisciplinary team with similar judgments on the glossectomy, the most satisfactory procedure, and some discrepancy on the other procedures, canthoplasty, and cheek augmentation. There were no infections or extrusion of prostheses, and a rather high incidence of extrusion of prostheses, and a rather high incidence of bone …

Transoral robotic surgery in oral tongue cancer patients with trismus: a retrospective evaluation of feasibility and surgical outcomes.

Transoral robotic surgery (TORS) has transformed the surgical management of head and neck tumors, yet its role in oral tongue cancers with trismus remains underexplored. Traditional open approaches for posterior or extensive tongue lesions are often associated with high morbidity and poor aesthetic outcomes. This study investigates the feasibility, safety, and outcomes of TORS glossectomy in oral tongue cancers, particularly in anatomically challenging cases such as those with trismus or tumor extension to adjacent structures. In this retrospective study, 67 patients with oral tongue cancer un…

Controversies in relation to neck management in N0 early oral tongue cancer.

The standard local treatment for early-stage tongue cancer with no clinical lymph node metastases is partial glossectomy. The frequency of occult lymph node metastasis is ~20-30%. Thus, whether prophylactic neck dissection with glossectomy or glossectomy alone should be performed has been a controversial issue since the 1980s. Both treatments have advantages and disadvantages; however, especially in cases involving prophylactic neck dissection, surgical invasion and complications including the cosmetic disadvantage caused by neck skin incision, accessory nerve paralysis or facial nerve (mandib…

Benign symmetric lipomatosis with lingual involvement: Case report and literature review.

Benign symmetrical lipomatosis (BSL) is a rare disorder characterized by diffuse, multiple, symmetric and non-encapsulated fat masses generally localized in the face, neck and upper trunk. An uncommon case of lingual affliction in BSL, presented with macroglossia, sleep apnea, dysphagia and dysartria is described. Bilateral partial glossectomy was performed, with an improvement in initial symptoms one year after surgery. Only seven other BSL cases with lingual involvement have been reported in the literature. This case report and literature review highlights that BSL with lingual affliction is…

Outcomes of Tongue Reduction Surgery in Beckwith-Wiedemann Syndrome: A Systematic Review.

INTRODUCTION: Macroglossia is a frequent clinical feature of Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome (BWS), a congenital overgrowth disorder. Macroglossia can lead to abnormal breathing, feeding, speech, and dentoskeletal development. Partial glossectomy is a common intervention aimed at reducing these abnormalities. The optimal timing of partial glossectomy remains controversial due to the potential need for secondary surgery and the ongoing growth of the tongue in early childhood. MATERIALS AND METHODS: After PRISMA-ScR and PRISMA-S reporting standards, this systematic review included English language …

Profunda Artery Perforator Flap Tongue Reconstruction: An Effective and Safe Alternative to the Anterolateral Thigh Flap.

BACKGROUND: The anterolateral thigh (ALT) perforator flap is a workhorse flap for tongue reconstruction. The authors present an alternative option using the profunda artery perforator (PAP) flap for glossectomy reconstruction compared with the ALT flap. METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted of 65 patients who underwent subtotal or total glossectomy reconstruction between 2016 and 2020 (46 ALT versus 19 PAP flaps). Flap volume was assessed using computed tomography scans at two different time points. Quality of life and functional outcomes were measured using the MD Anderson Symptom In…

Risk factors for gastric-tube dependence following tongue reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative dysphagia is not uncommon following significant glossectomy with laryngeal preservation. To develop effective treatments for this patient population, risk factors for postoperative dysphagia must be accurately identified. The objective of this retrospective study was to identify independent risk factors for dysphagia following microvascular tongue reconstruction. METHODS: We performed a retrospective chart review of 222 patients who had undergone microvascular tongue reconstruction after significant glossectomy with laryngeal preservation. The variables examined were…

[Results of surgical treatment of tongue cancer].

Fourty-four patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue have been treated by surgery. Twenty-two out of 44 patients were treated by a glossectomy alone and the remaining 22 by en bloc dissection with a glossectomy and neck dissection. The 5-year cumulative survival rate of these 44 cases was 86.1%, broken down as follows: stage I (20 cases), 100%; stage II (9 cases), 88.9%; stage III (11 cases), 72.7%; and, stage IV (4 cases), 50%. Four cases had a recurrence in the primary site, and 6 in the cervical region. Five out of 44 cases died (4 from tongue cancer, and one from other causes). …

Correlation during the extent of surgical resection, oral function and quality of life after tongue cancer surgery: Single-institution study.

INTRODUCTION: The extent of surgical resection for tongue tumors is determined by tumor size, potentially affecting oral function and quality of life (QoL). However, the relationship between oral dysfunction and QoL decline due to glossectomy extent remains unexplored. Therefore, these correlations and their predictive value for postoperative QoL decline were elucidated. METHODS: Patients treated for tongue cancer at our hospital between 2018 and 2022 were categorized by partial, hemi, or subtotal/total glossectomy. Assessments included swallowing function (RSST), articulation (Oral Diadochok…
