Up in the air: the efficacy of weighted gloves in figure skating jumps.

Successful performance of difficult, multi-revolution jumps is a critical aspect of singles and pairs figure skating. Key determinants of quality jumps include jump height, angular momentum at takeoff (L_BodyTO) and total body moment of inertia (I_Body). The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of weighted gloves on L_BodyTO of figure skating jumps. Kinematic data was collected from thirteen skaters during on-ice testing sessions conducted before and after one week of training with weighted gloves. A one-way repeated measures ANOVA was used to compare metrics from jumps performed

Dyschromia of hands and bronchial asthma caused by sooty molds.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) infects cervical epithelial cells through cellular membrane receptors, and then induces the initiation and progression of cervical cancer. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) may impact the susceptibility and outcome of diseases, but it's still unknown whether variant in HPV receptor and associated genes is associated with type-specific HPV infection and cervical lesion progression. We examined 96 SNPs in 8 genes which may participate in the HPV infection process in 875 samples with HPV negative or single HPV16, 18, 52, 58 positive from 3299 cervical exfoliated ce

The Effects of Mixed Martial Arts Gloves on Grip Strength.

Peveler, WW, Schoffstall, J, Kilian, J, Glauser, J, Coots, J, and Peveler, R. The effects of mixed martial arts gloves on grip strength in trained fighters. J Strength Cond Res 39(8): 890-892, 2025-Grip strength is a key component during grappling segments of a mixed martial arts (MMA) competition. Gloves are worn during MMA competitions to reduce damage to the striker and the opponent during contact. Fighters often complain that MMA gloves reduce the ability to grip an opponent effectively. However, the reported decrease in grip strength has yet to be examined. The purpose of this study was t

Hand eczema in glove-wearing patients.

BACKGROUND: Allergic contact dermatitis to gloves is mostly induced by rubber accelerators. The European baseline series (EBS) appears insufficient to detect glove allergy. Since 2017, it is recommended to use the European rubber series (ERS) and to test the patients' own gloves. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the clinical profile of glove-wearing patients with hand eczema (HE) and to evaluate their sensitisation profile to glove allergens and the value of testing the patients' own gloves. METHODS: We conducted a French multicentre study of patients evaluated for HE between 2018 and 2020 and tes

[Acrometastasis from breast cancer after the use of frozen gloves by adjuvant chemotherapy].

A woman was referred to adjuvant chemotherapy after radical mastectomy. Frozen gloves were used to prevent onycholysis and neurotoxicity. Because of rapid progression of the cancer she received palliative chemotherapy. Shortly after she presented with growing subungual inflammation, first suspected to be a felon, but later diagnosed as a metastasis. Acrometastasis is very rare and is often mistaken for infection. The learning point is to consider acrometastasis when treatment for felon fails in patients with a history of cancer. A possible relationship between frozen gloves and acrometastasis

Knowledge and practice of personal protective measures during the COVID-19 pandemic: A cross-sectional study in Saudi Arabia.

The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) is an emergent infectious pathogen causing an acute respiratory disease called corona virus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Virus transmission may occur by contact, droplet, airborne or via contaminated surfaces. In efforts to effectively control the COVID-19 outbreak, the world health organization (WHO) and the Saudi Ministry of Health (MOH) have advised the public to practice protective measures to reduce transmission of the virus and reduce incidence of infection. These measures include hand washing, wearing masks and gloves and avoi

Risk Factors and Predictive Model for Occupational Contact Dermatitis Among Nurses in Hefei, China: A Cross-sectional Study.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the prevalence, risk factors, and protective measures of occupational contact dermatitis (OCD) among nurses in Hefei, China; create a predictive model for nurses' experiencing contact dermatitis; and assess the model's effectiveness. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey using the Nordic Occupational Skin Questionnaire 2002 was conducted among 273 nurses at a hospital in Hefei, China, from December 2022 to February 2023. Predictive factors for nurses' contact dermatitis were identified through regression analyses. A predictive model, represented by a nomogram, was establ

Occupational dermatitis from a one-component naphthalene type epoxy adhesive.

In an electronics plant, a new one-component naphthalene type epoxy resin was used as an adhesive for reinforcing a circuit board. The resinous part of the adhesive consisted of diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) and 1,6-bis(2,3-epoxypropoxy)naphthalene type epoxy resins. The hardener was methylhexahydrophthalic anhydride (MHHPA). Of 54 workers, 15 (27.8%) were diagnosed to have work-related dermatitis but were not patch tested. Therefore, it was impossible to determine the specific agent responsible for the worker's symptoms or to distinguish between allergic and irritant contact dermati

Transfer of pathogens to and from patients, healthcare providers, and medical devices during care activity-a systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: The transfer of pathogens may spread antimicrobial resistance and lead to healthcare-acquired infections. We performed a systematic literature review to generate estimates of pathogen transfer in relation to healthcare provider (HCP) activities. METHODS: For this systematic review and meta-analysis, Medline/Ovid, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library were searched for studies published before July 7, 2017. We reviewed the literature, examining transfer of pathogens associated with HCP activities. We included studies that (1) quantified transfer of pathogens from a defined origin to a de

Personal protective equipment for preventing highly infectious diseases due to exposure to contaminated body fluids in healthcare staff.

BACKGROUND: In epidemics of highly infectious diseases, such as Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) or SARS, healthcare workers (HCW) are at much greater risk of infection than the general population, due to their contact with patients' contaminated body fluids. Contact precautions by means of personal protective equipment (PPE) can reduce the risk. It is unclear which type of PPE protects best, what is the best way to remove PPE, and how to make sure HCWs use PPE as instructed. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate which type or component of full-body PPE and which method of donning or removing (doffing) PPE have t

[Allergic sensitization and latex-associated symptoms in a group of health workers].

The presence of symptoms connected with the use of latex rubber gloves and sensitization to this allergen was studied in a group of 660 hospital workers who regularly used gloves as a means of protection. Symptoms connected with the use of gloves were reported by 153 subjects (23.2%) and were significantly associated with female subjects length of use and type of medical care. The majority of cases reported irritative symptoms (13.2%) whereas contact dermatitis and rash were reported by 3.6% and 5.5% of cases respectively. Systemic reactions (asthma and/or rhinitis) were reported by 5 subjects

A prospective service evaluation of sterile gloves alone versus sterile gloves and gowns in elective skin surgery.

Personal protective equipment (PPE) protects the patient from contamination of the surgical site and operating team from potential infection arising from the blood and body fluids of the patient. National guidelines in England recommend that operative teams wear sterile gloves and gowns during surgery. However, PPE is known to be associated with increased cost and carbon footprint. The aim of this study was to determine whether omitting sterile gowns during skin surgery affected surgical site infection (SSI), cost and carbon footprint. A prospective service evaluation was performed at the Frim
