Guinea pigs are frequently used as models for ventricular tachyarrhythmias, including polymorphic ventricular tachycardia (VT) and ventricular fibrillation. However, applications of the model for short-term therapies are limited because the arrhythmias are transient, typically lasting <5 sec. Thus, spontaneous termination cannot be easily distinguished from effective short-term therapy in standard models. Marburg virus (MV) reproduction in organs, hematological and pathological changes were studied by virological and clinical methods, light and electron microscopy in guinea pigs respiratory challenged by the virus. In this study 302 biopsy-confirmed benign breast lesions in Papua New Guinean (Melanesian) women during a ten-year period were reviewed. Inflammatory breast disease was the most frequent type. Chronic mastitis, chronic suppurative mastitis and abscesses formed 32% of benign breast lesions and 71% of the group of mastitides. 10 cases of tuberculous mastitis were recorded. Q fever is seldom reported in West Africa. The case of a man returning from Guinea Bissau who presented an acute lobar pneumonia with fever, headache, hematuria and hepatitis was confirmed by high titers of antibody in Phase II indirect immuno-fluorescence which appeared on the twelfth day of fever. Treatment with erythromycin was continued by doxycyclin, and complete resolution of all signs was promptly obtained. Coxiella Burnetii might thus be responsible of cases of unexplained fever with respiratory or hepatic manifestations in West Africa.

Data from the Papua New Guinea Tumour Registry and the Central Pathology Department were reviewed in order to document the incidence and pattern of malignancies in children in Papua New Guinea. Altogether, 680 cases of histologically defined childhood malignancies were recorded during the 14.5 years from 1971 to 1985. The frequencies of the various tumours were compared with past data and with published data from other countries. A retrospective survey of burn cases admitted to Alotau Hospital, Papua New Guinea, over a four-year period showed that 48% were due to grass-skirt burns. Most of these occurred in young girls and usually caused full-thickness burns of the buttocks and thigh. The commonest long-term complications were contractures of the hips and knees. The next most common cause of burns was a fall into a fire during an epileptic fit (24%). None of the patients were on anticonvulsants. A retrospective study was carried out, of 48 patients with glaucoma, who presented over a 2 year period at Port Moresby General Hospital. No cases of chronic open angle glaucoma or acute angle closure glaucoma with shallow anterior chamber were found in the 37 Papua New Guinean patients. The effect of hyoscine on the peristaltic activity of the proximal and distal ileum of the guinea-pig was studied. Nine cases of lymphoblastic leukemia were observed in 4,500 guinea pigs from three guinea pig production colonies during a period of 3 years. Seven cases of non-supportive polyarthritis are reported from the Madang General Hospital over a 12 month period from June 1972. The distribution of diagnostic categories is similar to that reported by Maddocks in Port Moresby, with Reiter's disease featuring prominently.
