The median effective doses (ED(50)) of 28 lots of killed Pasteurella pestis strain 195/P vaccine were determined in mice and guinea pigs. Mice were injected with vaccine alone, whereas guinea pigs received vaccine suspended in incomplete Freund's adjuvant. Potency ratios of vaccines were obtained by comparing the ED(50) of the test with that of a reference vaccine. Cytophilic antibody has been demonstrated in the serum of guinea-pigs injected with sheep red cells mixed with Freund's complete adjuvant. Sheep red cells adhered, in the absence of serum, to normal guinea-pig macrophages which had been treated in vitro with such serum. We examined aspects of husbandry, health and welfare of pet guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus, GP) in Norway. An online questionnaire (with 100 questions) was completed by 284 GP owners. Crossbreeds were the most common (36.6%). Most GPs were between one and four years of age (67.2%). The sex ratio was about 50-50%. Animals were mainly housed indoors (64.1%) and only nine GPs had less space than 0.72 m2. The incidence of stereotypic or negative behaviours was low.
