Affective lability predicts decreased habituation in posttraumatic stress symptom responding during a single laboratory session of imaginal exposure.

Affective lability, or the instability of emotional states, is associated with heightened levels of trauma-related emotional responding and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms. However, the impact of affective lability, specifically on habituation to idiographic trauma cues, has yet to be examined among trauma-exposed individuals. The current study examined differential response trajectories to trauma-related imaginal exposure as a function of affective lability. Specifically, 72 women with a history of sexual victimization participated in a laboratory-based study involving a single

Reduced habituation of the retinal ganglion cell response to sustained pattern stimulation in multiple sclerosis patients.

OBJECTIVE: Sustained pattern stimulation in normal subjects induces adaptive changes in pattern electroretinogram (PERG), an effect that has been interpreted as a response of glial cells and retinal ganglion cells (RGC). The aim of this study was to compare the effect in normal subjects and in multiple sclerosis patients without previous optic neuritis. METHODS: PERGs were elicited by a 7.5 Hz pattern stimulus, presented continuously over 152 s. Response cycles were averaged in 20 packets of 60 events each and amplitude and phase of the 2nd harmonic response was measured. Adaptive changes are

Slow rates of habituation predict greater zBMI gains over 12 months in lean children.

Slow rates of habituation are cross-sectionally related to greater energy intake and body weight. The present study is designed to assess whether slow rates of habituation are prospectively related to zBMI change over a 12 month period in 66 lean 8-12 year-old children, and whether the rate of habituation is a stable behavioral phenotype. Results showed that slower rates of habituation predicted greater zBMI change, controlling for child sex, age, initial zBMI, dietary awareness and minority status. In addition, the rate of habituation was stable over the year of observation. These data sugges

Synapsin is selectively required for anesthesia-sensitive memory.

Odor-shock memory in Drosophila melanogaster consists of heterogeneous components each with different dynamics. We report that a null mutant for the evolutionarily conserved synaptic protein Synapsin entails a memory deficit selectively in early memory, leaving later memory as well as sensory motor function unaffected. Notably, a consolidated memory component remaining after cold-anesthesia is not impaired, suggesting that only anesthesia-sensitive memory [ASM] depends on Synapsin. The lack of Synapsin does not further impair the memory deficit of mutants for the rutabaga gene encoding the typ

A model for the perception of environmental sound based on notice-events.

An approach is proposed to shed light on the mechanisms underlying human perception of environmental sound that intrudes in everyday living. Most research on exposure-effect relationships aims at relating overall effects to overall exposure indicators in an epidemiological fashion, without including available knowledge on the possible underlying mechanisms. Here, it is proposed to start from available knowledge on audition and perception to construct a computational framework for the effect of environmental sound on individuals. Obviously, at the individual level additional mechanisms (inter-s

Simple behavioral assessment of mouse olfaction.

This unit presents two basic protocols that offer rapid assessments of anosmia (the absence of a sense of smell) in mice. The buried food test is used to check for the ability to smell volatile odors. The olfactory habituation/dishabituation test is used to test whether the animal can detect and differentiate different odors, including both nonsocial and social odors. A non-contact method of odor presentation, along with a general method for collecting urine samples, is given as an alternate protocol. The tests described in this unit only require simple equipment and can be adopted readily by

Ethanol familiarity and naltrexone treatment affect ethanol responses in rats.

In the present study, the effects of ethanol familiarity on the ability of naltrexone to alter ethanol palatability and consumption were examined. One group of rats was allowed continuous access to 10% vol/vol ethanol and water for 3 weeks. A second group received only water. At the end of this time, the groups were further subdivided and injected with either 3mg/kg naltrexone or saline (total of four groups; n=11-13 per group) before ethanol taste reactivity tests with 10% vol/vol ethanol and ethanol consumption tests. Results showed that naltrexone effectively decreased ingestive responding

Effects of cosmonaut vestibular training on vestibular function prior to spaceflight.

The purpose of this study was to quantify the effects of repetitive Coriolis and cross-coupled stimulations, similar to the vestibular training the cosmonauts are exposed to prior to their spaceflight. on vestibular function in control subjects on Earth. Ten volunteers were passively rotated in yaw on a rotating chair while executing standardized pitch head-and-trunk movements. The chair stopped to change direction after 12 head-and-trunk movements were made. The runs were grouped in sessions of ten, which were repeated daily for 10 days. The severity of motion sickness was assessed by subjecti

The role of background movement in goldfish vision.

In experiments described in the literature objects presented to restrained goldfish failed to induce eye movements like fixation and/or tracking. We show here that eye movements can be induced only if the background (visual surround) is not stationary relative to the fish but moving. We investigated the influence of background motion on eye movements in the range of angular velocities of 5-20 degrees s(-1). The response to presentation of an object is a transient shift in mean horizontal eye position which lasts for some 10 s. If an object is presented in front of the fish the eyes move in a d

Visual-vestibular habituation and balance training for motion sickness.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: This case report describes physical therapy for motion sickness in a 34-year-old woman. The purpose of the report is twofold: (1) to provide an overview of the literature regarding motion sickness syndrome, causal factors, and rationale for treatment and (2) to describe the evaluation and treatment of a patient with motion sickness. CASE DESCRIPTION AND OUTCOMES: The patient initially had moderate to severe visually induced motion sickness, which affected her functional abilities and prevented her from working. Following 10 weeks of a primarily home-based program of vi

Overprediction of fear in panic disorder patients with agoraphobia: does the (mis)match model generalize to exposure in vivo therapy?

The purpose of this study was to test the (mis)match model of Rachman and co-workers during real life exposure therapy in panic disorder patients with agoraphobic avoidance. The results showed that although the patients tended to overpredict their expected fear before the exposure sessions, their predictions did not show a tendency to become more accurate in the course of treatment. After an overprediction predicted fear tended to decrease and self-efficacy tended to increase; after a correct match both predicted fear and self-efficacy remained unchanged. Patients reports of fear tended to dec

[Habituation in visceral systems].

Arterial blood pressure, heart rate and dynamic of neuronal activity in the cerebral cortex and medulla oblongata were selected as indices of the visceral habituation to stimulation of the splanchnic and mesenteric nerves. The habituation was more rapid in primary projection zones of the cerebral cortex rather than in the medulla oblongata nuclei and more obvious in unspecific structures of the brain (associative cortex, gigantocellular, reticular and ventral nuclei of the medulla oblongata). Evoked potentials recorded in the area S1 during long-term stimulation of the pelvic nerve revealed de

Successful transfer of adaptation acquired in a slow rotation room to motion environments in Navy flight training.

Two flight students, grounded for the reason they were highly susceptible to motion sickness, completed their training after gradually adapting to 10 rpm, achieved by executing head movements during small stepwise increases in angular velocity. Subject 1 executed a total of about 77 000 head movements with a period of 5 months and Subject 2 executed about 108 000 head movements within a period of 42 days. The transfer of adaptation acquired in the laboratory to most motion environments aloft was good; the notable exception involved weightless maneuvers in the case of Subject 1. Both were on fl

Retrograde amnesia: production of skseletal but not cardiac response gradient by electroconvulsive shock.

Rats given a single electroconvulsive shock immediately after but not 60 seconds after an aversive conditioning trial exhibited behavioral retention deficits 24 hours later in a one-trial passive avoidance task. In contrast to these differential performance deficits, similar heart-rate changes, indicative of fear retention, were seen in punished animals irrespective of the time of delivery of the shock. These data suggest retention of a generalized fear to the training experience that was not revealed by the behavioral measure. The potential usefulness of concomitant behavioral and physiologic

Anxiogenic and anxiolytic modulators differentially affect thigmotaxis and thrashing behavior in adult zebrafish during habituation to the open field test.

The Open Field Test (OFT) is a valuable paradigm to study the effects of distinct anxiety-like states on exploratory dynamics. Zebrafish responds to anxiogenic and anxiolytic protocols in the OFT, but the influence of such manipulations on the habituation process is still unclear. Here, we aimed to elucidate how distinct anxiety modulators influence thigmotaxis over time and thrashing behavior. For this, adult zebrafish (Danio rerio) were submitted to the morphine (1.5 mg/L) withdrawal protocol (MOR) and acute conspecific alarm substance (CAS) at 3.5 mL/L for 5 min as anxiogenic exposures. For

Habituation Learning Is a Widely Affected Mechanism in Drosophila Models of Intellectual Disability and Autism Spectrum Disorders.

BACKGROUND: Although habituation is one of the most ancient and fundamental forms of learning, its regulators and its relevance for human disease are poorly understood. METHODS: We manipulated the orthologs of 286 genes implicated in intellectual disability (ID) with or without comorbid autism spectrum disorder (ASD) specifically in Drosophila neurons, and we tested these models in light-off jump habituation. We dissected neuronal substrates underlying the identified habituation deficits and integrated genotype-phenotype annotations, gene ontologies, and interaction networks to determine the

Development of an apparatus and methodology for conducting functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) with pharmacological stimuli in conscious rhesus monkeys.

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is a technique with significant potential to advance our understanding of multiple brain systems. However, when human subjects undergo fMRI studies they are typically conscious whereas pre-clinical fMRI studies typically utilize anesthesia, which complicates comparisons across studies. Therefore, we have developed an apparatus suitable for imaging conscious rhesus monkeys. In order to minimize subject stress and spatial motion, each subject was acclimated to the necessary procedures over several months. The effectiveness of this process was then eva
