Haemophilus ducreyi is the etiologic agent of chancroid, a sexually transmitted disease that increases the rate of transmission of human immunodeficiency virus. Chancroid ulcerations are difficult to distinguish from those produced by syphilis and herpes. Diagnosis based solely on clinical grounds is inaccurate, and culture is insensitive. Highly sensitive PCR has largely superseded culture as the preferred method of laboratory diagnosis; however, neither culture nor PCR is feasible where chancroid is endemic. A review of Haemophilus influenzae (Hi) infections in Mexico over the past 32 years was conducted. The proportion of Hi isolates in relation to positive cultures for distinct diseases was distributed as follows for meningitis (9-69%) and for pneumonia with empyema (6-28%). We describe the use of a DNA probe for genotyping clinical isolates of Haemophilus influenzae. The probe, containing capsulation genes, differentiates between the six Haemophilus serotypes in a Southern blotting procedure. Routine procedures used to isolate Haemophilus ducreyi in a busy laboratory are reported. Identification was based on colony morphology and nutritional and biochemical properties of 120 fresh isolates of H. ducreyi. The purpose of this report is to describe the lesions of otitis and meningitis associated with Haemophilus somnus infection in a heifer.The animal was found dead in its pen. At necropsy, there was a severe fibrinopurulent meningitis and suppurative otitis media and interna. The external ear canal contained inspissated debris. Haemophilus somnus was recovered in pure culture from the meningeal exudate. The identity of the organism was confirmed by fluorescent antibody and agar gel immunodiffusion tests. Possible pathogenetic mechanisms are discussed.

Of 300 men in Nairobi, Kenya, with culture-proven chancroid, 57% had acquired infection from prostitutes. The majority of infections were acquired in the city of Nairobi. Brodie's abscess is a form of subacute osteomyelitis which is defined by a particular constellation of clinical, radiological and pathological features. Its occurrence in infants is extremely rare. This case documents just such an occurrence. To our knowledge, the pathogen Haemophilus influenzae has not been previously recognized as a cause of Brodie's abscess in particular or subacute osteomyelitis in general. The clinical presentation and diagnostic pitfalls which may be encountered in this age group are discussed.

An indirect fluorescent antibody technique which allows the detection of antibody against or the recognition of Haemophilus ducreyi has been developed. Heat inactivated antiserum was reacted uith prepared smears of Haimophilus species and selected organisms commonly associated with penile ulcerations. In serum absorbed with Haemophilus sp no fluorescence was observed with 156 heterologous organisms, but all six strains of bacteriologically confirmed H. ducreyi gave significant reactions with the absorbed anti-WD-68 serum.

Strains of Diplococcus pneumoniae and Haemophilus influenzae were tested for susceptibility to numerous antibiotics by a twofold agar dilution method using an inocula replicator.
