Simulation of low-energy impacts on the human hand for prediction of peak reaction forces and bone fracture.

Hands of workers in extractive and heavy-duty industries are susceptible to suffering injuries of varying severity. Improved safety procedures and new technologies for production and maintenance tasks have contributed to reducing the severity of injuries. However, manual tasks with high-risk factors can still lead to hand injuries. Hand bone fractures and dislocations can be caused by relatively small objects impacting a region of the hand at velocities in the range of 1.3 to 1.6 m per second. This impact can produce significant functional, physical, and psychological consequences in those aff

Validation of automated bone age analysis from hand radiographs in a North American pediatric population.

BACKGROUND: Radiographic bone age assessment by automated software is precise and instantaneous. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of an automated tool for bone age assessment. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We compared a total of 586 bone age radiographs from 451 patients, which had been assessed by three radiologists from 2013 to 2018, with bone age analysis by BoneXpert, using the Greulich and Pyle method. We made bone age comparisons in different patient groups based on gender, diagnosis and race, and in a subset with repeated bone age studies. We calculated Spearman

Sex and External Size Specific Limitations in Assessing Bone Health From Adult Hand Radiographs.

Morphological parameters measured for the second metacarpal from hand radiographs are used clinically for assessing bone health during growth and aging. Understanding how these morphological parameters relate to metacarpal strength and strength at other anatomical sites is critical for providing informed decision-making regarding treatment strategies and effectiveness. The goals of this study were to evaluate the extent to which 11 morphological parameters, nine of which were measured from hand radiographs, relate to experimentally measured whole-bone strength assessed at multiple anatomical s

Learning Curve of Two Handed Endoscopic Ear Surgery on Sheep Temporal Bone: A Fellow's Perspective.

BACKGROUND: Migraine is a common, chronic, neurovascular disorder, generally characterised by attacks of severe headache and autonomic nervous system dysfunction. Triptans are selective serotonin 5-HT(1B/1D) receptor agonists that represent effective therapeutic options for moderate-to-severe migraine attacks but with higher acquisition costs relative to usual care therapies. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to examine the cost effectiveness of rizatriptan treatment compared with 'Usual Care' or other triptans available in Canada for patients with moderate-to-severe migraine for who

Aneurysmal bone cyst of the hand. An unusual location in the first phalanges of the first finger. Case report.

A 40-year-old woman presented with a lesion on the first phalanx of her right thumb, which on radiography appeared to be a cystic lesion. This was treated with curettage and bone graft but recurred a year later. It was treated in the same way, and 18 months later there has been no sign of recurrence. Histological examination confirmed that it was an aneurysmal bone cyst.

In vivo analysis of bone calcium by local neutron activation of the hand: results in normal and osteoporotic subjects.

Mineral loss from bone can be measured accurately and reproducibly by neutron activation of the hand bones using a 5-min irradiation (10(6) n/cm2-sec) with two 200-microgram sources of Cf-252. The hand dose is 7.5 rad equivalent and the dose to the rest of body is 1.5 mrem. Controls (132) and osteoporotic patients (45) were compared. Between ages 20 and 60 the control group showed a bone calcium concentration of 0.177 +/- 0.025 g/cm3, independent of age. Between 60 and 70 the content remained unchanged in men but declined in women to 0.15 +/- 0.2 g/cm3. In all age groups osteoporotic patients …

Osteoblastoma of the thumb with a novel PRSS44::ALK fusion and literature review of osteoblastoma of hands and feet bones.

Osteoblastomas (OBs) are benign neoplasms constituting approximately 1% of primary bone tumors with a predilection for the spine and sacrum. We describe an OB of the proximal phalanx of the left thumb in a 38-year-old female. MRI of left hand demonstrated a 29-mm mildly expansile enhancing lesion involving the entire proximal phalanx of the first digit. Histology displayed a bone-forming tumor consisting of trabeculae of remodeled woven bone framed by plump osteoblasts in a vascularized background. Next-generation sequencing analysis identified a PRSS44::ALK fusion gene.

Is Bone Elevation in Hand Muscle Attachments Associated with Biomechanical Stress? A Histological Approach to an Anthropological Question.

In anthropological sciences, muscle attachments are typically utilized for reconstructing the physical activities of past human populations. This approach relies on the concept that entheseal bone morphology is influenced by cumulative biomechanical stress. A fundamental criterion for assessing the stage of entheseal change involves the proportion of elevated bone area. However, it is not yet clear if bone elevation is associated with biomechanical forces exerted during physical activity, while the histology of the entheses of the human hand, the least-bodyweight-bearing anatomical area, is no

Bone healing after secondary surgery on hand allografts under sirolimus-based maintenance immunosuppression.

Composite tissue allograft transplantation is a recognized option for reconstruction in upper limb amputees. Sirolimus is an immunosuppressive drug that prevents organ rejection and improves kidney function, but its use has been associated with impaired healing. Two recipients of bilateral hand allografts underwent arthrodeses of 6 joints as secondary procedures while being treated with sirolimus. We found no clinical or radiologic evidence of bone healing delay or bone nonunion. The functional evaluation revealed an improvement in the performance of activities of daily living after the transp

Hand bone densitometry associates with nailfold capillaroscopic severity of microvascular damage in systemic sclerosis: a pilot study.

OBJECTIVES: Patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc) exhibit systemic and more pronounced micro- and macro-architectural bone damage compared to healthy subjects (HS). The extent of the microvascular damage in SSc may be associated with the severity of compromised systemic bone integrity. The aim of this study is to investigate and score the status of the hand bone mineral density (BMD) in patients with SSc, using a new dedicated hand software and to score the microvascular status of the same hands by using nailfold videocapillaroscopy (NVC). METHODS: Bone mineral density (BMD/g/cm2) and bone m

Opportunistic hand radiographs to screen for low forearm bone mineral density: a prospective and retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Low bone mineral density affects 53% of women over age 65 in the US, yet many are unaware and remain untreated. Underdiagnosis of forearm osteoporosis and related fragility fractures represent missed warning signs of more deadly, future fractures. This study aimed to determine if hand radiographs could serve as early, simple screening tools for predicting low forearm bone mineral density (BMD). METHODS: We evaluated posterior-anterior (PA) hand radiographs (x-rays) and Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scans of 43 participants. The ratio of the intramedullary cavity to total
