OBJECTIVE: Bicycle helmet use has become an important measure of the effectiveness of bicycle safety programs and the effectiveness of helmet legislation. Accounts of analytical comparisons of observation site selection methods are scarce. This report addresses this gap by reporting the relative effectiveness and costs of two alternative approaches to the selection of observation sites for helmet use counts.
METHODS: The community based (COBA) method of site selection entailed asking community informants to identify locations frequented by young bicycle riders. In the bicycle club/map (CLMA)

It appears from this review of the literature that both linear and angular accelerations are important in the production of injury to the brain. These mechanical inputs to the head result in differential movements or strains in the contents of the head. These strains, if large enough, produce the irreversible loss of function or physical disruptions of neural or other tissue, observed following head impacts. Owing to the difficulties in measuring these strains, criteria for injury levels are written in terms of external movements of the head, and for the more easily measurable linear accelerat

BACKGROUND: Surfing's Olympic inclusion has spotlighted it as an internationally popular, high-impact sport with risks of neurosurgical-relevant trauma. However, research on these injuries remains sparse and heterogenous and no synthesis has mapped this literature. All athletic levels of surfers face unique biomechanical forces from wave impacts, board collisions, and seafloor contact, which results in a significant, yet under-quantified, neurotrauma prevalence. Despite parallels with other action sports, surfing-specific epidemiology, helmet efficacy, and standardized return-to-play guideline

Air-filled chambers offer a promising approach for designing lightweight and portable bicycle helmets, yet their effectiveness in real-world cycling accidents, particularly under oblique impacts, remains unexplored. Here, for the first time, we evaluated the brain injury mitigation performance of a commercially available air-filled helmet, Ventete aH-1, under oblique impacts, and compared it with three conventional cycle helmets, ranking high, middle and low in a recent study of 30 cycle helmets. Helmets were fitted to a new headform with more biofidelic physical properties than other existing

Physical surrogates of the human head are commonly used to model cranial impacts, assess helmet efficacy and assess likelihood of head injuries. The Brain Injury Protection Evaluation Device (BIPED mk2) is a head form that contains a brain simulant, cerebrospinal fluid layer (CSF), connective membranes, a skull and a skin layer, and can be configured to measure kinematics, pressures and strains. In design efforts to increase the biofidelity of surrogates, finite element models play a significant role in assessing design iterations that better mimic the biological response of the head during im

CONTEXT: A sport-related concussion (SRC) is a traumatic brain injury that is caused by biomechanical stresses and results in a complex pathophysiological process in the brain. Some in the sporting community believe that headgear (HG) can prevent SRC, and several professional Australian sports organizations, including rugby, football, and soccer clubs, recommend its use.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to determine whether HG is effective in lowering the prevalence of SRC in sports.
DATA SOURCES: A systematic search for related studies published between 1985 and 2023 was conducted us

Endoscopic strip craniectomy followed by postoperative remodeling helmet therapy for scaphocephaly is widely accepted, but the requirement of several helmets might burden patients or their families. This study examined whether craniectomy via a bicoronal approach without molding helmet therapy is worth considering. The authors retrospectively reviewed patients with nonsyndromic sagittal suture synostosis who underwent the modified Renier H technique between 2016 and 2021. We collected data on preoperative and postoperative cephalic index (CI), operative time, estimated blood loss, and blood tr

The article presents the results of the analysis of electric scooter user kinematics after a crash against a vehicle. The share of electric scooters (e-scooters) in urban traffic has been growing in recent years. The number of road accidents involving e-scooters is also increasing. However, the safety situation of electric scooter users is insufficiently researched in terms of kinematics and injury outcomes. The article presents the importance of this problem based on an in-depth literature analysis of e-scooter-related types of accidents, injuries percentages, and helmet use. Subsequently, fo

BACKGROUND: How the modification of saddle fitting parameters in horse riding affects rider's kinetics is very uncertain. The aim of this study is to describe how manipulating the two main adjustments that an end-user is likely to perform (saddle tilt and stirrup length) affects the biomechanics of a horse rider on a living horse.
METHODS: Eleven showjumpers volunteered to take part in this study. Each participant performed a 120-strides standardization trial at trot and canter, with 0° saddle tilt and stirrup length that would position the rider's knee at 90°. Following the standardization t

Currently, molded helmet therapy is used to treat infants with deformational plagiocephaly. However, the indices of normal cranial shape remain unclear, and thus, the prevalence of deformational plagiocephaly is unknown, particularly in Japan. We investigated the reference values for cranial morphological characteristics in 1-month-old Japanese infants using a three-dimensional scanner, to determine the prevalence of deformational plagiocephaly. One hundred fifty-three healthy infants who visited three hospitals (from April 2020 to March 2021) were enrolled. Cranial shape was measured using a

Bicycle utilization continues to increase annually, and this trend was recently accelerated by the coronavirus disease of 2019 pandemic. There is limited epidemiologic data, however, regarding the prevalence and nature of bicycle-related injuries. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to characterize trends in bicycle-related injuries. The National Electronic Injury Surveillance System was queried for bicycle-related injuries from 2012 to 2021. Patient demographic and injury data were collected and analyzed to describe trends in incidence, patient demographics, and injury patterns associated

Spiked helmet sign is a novel electrocardiogram marker that reflects a poor prognosis, and may mimic myocardial infarction, especially in patients with an acute alteration of mental status or out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. In cases where a spiked helmet sign is missed, there may be a delay in surgical intervention for the underlying conditions because of unnecessary cardiac catheterization. In addition, antiplatelet agents for acute coronary syndrome in such cases can lead to catastrophic complications. Therefore, early recognition of spiked helmet sign is useful for timely correction of the

INTRODUCTION: This effort, motivated and guided by prior simulated injury results of the unprotected head, is to assess and compare helmet pad configurations on the head for the effective mitigation of blast pressure transmission in the brain in multiple blast exposure environments.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A finite element model of blast loading on the head with six different helmet pad configurations was used to generate brain model biomechanical responses. The blast pressure attenuation performance of each pad configuration was evaluated by using the calculated pressure exposure fraction in
