Factors Associated with Breast Cancer Mammographic Screening Behavior among Iranian Women.

UNLABELLED: Breast cancer is one of the most common diseases of women, which can increase the survival of patients with its early diagnosis. Despite the existence of relatively sensitive methods of early detection of breast cancer, such as mammography, statistics show that a small number of women perform mammography according to the recommended clinical guidelines. Using the health belief model, this study aims to determine the factors affecting mammography among women teachers in Hamedan. METHODS: This study was conducted on 458 female teachers aged 40 years and older of Hamadan city, in wes…

Determinants of women's decision to undergo early mammography: A survey study.

For young women, mammography has limited effectiveness and entails exposure to radiation, discomfort, and additional expense. This study identifies factors associated with women's willingness to undergo mammography despite official guidelines to the contrary. Using the Health Belief Model, we surveyed Israeli women aged 40-51 who are not at high risk of breast cancer and who had or had never undergone mammography. The results show that sociodemographic characteristics, private insurance coverage, out-of-pocket payments to physicians, and three Health Belief Model categories - lower perceived b…

Pap test adherence, cervical cancer perceptions, and HPV knowledge among HIV-infected women in a community health setting.

The Health Belief Model (HBM) has been widely used as a framework to explain health behaviors in diverse populations, but little HBM research has focused on HIV-infected women and their increased risks for cervical cancer. We used Champion's Health Belief Model and Self-Efficacy scales to assess relationships between Pap test adherence and constructs of the HBM among 300 HIV-infected women. In addition, we assessed the relationship between HPV and cervical cancer knowledge and key HBM concepts. Participants reported low levels of knowledge regarding risk for cervical cancer and HPV. They perce…

An integrated HIV and chronic disease intervention to reduce HIV infection risk among older men who have sex with men in China: a randomized controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Population ageing has altered the health profile of men who have sex with men (MSM) in China, with older MSM experiencing overlapping challenges related to sexual health risks, chronic diseases, and stigma-related barriers to care. Conventional HIV interventions often fail to address these age-specific health priorities. This study evaluated an integrated HIV and chronic disease intervention, informed by the Health Belief Model (HBM), to examine its impact on HIV infection risk among older MSM. METHODS: A 6-month, single-blind, parallel-group randomized controlled trial was condu…

Belief towards caesarean section: A community based study of male partners in Ebonyi State, Nigeria.

INTRODUCTION: Caesarean section is a surgical procedure used in delivering a baby by incising the abdomen and uterus of the mother. In a typical Nigerian culture, it is seen as a method to deliver a baby when the mother is not strong. Based on this premise, most men show a very negative attitude towards the procedure. This negative attitude may translate to a belief which might not be wholesome. OBJECTIVES: To assess the belief of male partners towards caesarean section. METHODS: A sample of 400 male partners was investigated. The instrument used for data collection was a 22-item valid and r

An exploration of illness beliefs in mothers with postnatal depression.

OBJECTIVE: to explore illness beliefs in women with postnatal depression and suggest an appropriate health belief model. About 10% of recently delivered mothers suffer from depression. Postnatal depression may differ from depression occurring at other times in an individual's life not only symptomatically but also experiences, perceptions and beliefs about the illness differ because of the individual's specific role as a carer for a newborn baby. Whilst illness beliefs have been extensively examined using models from physical health, recent studies have pointed out that physical health models …

Preventive skin care beliefs of people with spinal cord injury.

Although health beliefs have been correlated with self-care adherence in other chronic conditions, little is known about skin care beliefs after spinal cord injury (SCI). The purpose of this qualitative study was to identify the skin care beliefs of individuals with SCI. The conceptual framework was the Health Belief Model (HBM), which proposes that adherence to a health regimen is motivated by beliefs about susceptibility, severity, barriers, benefits, and self-efficacy. Purposive sampling was used to recruit 22 people with SCI. Content analysis of data collected using semistructured question…

Validity and reliability assessment of health belief scales for mammography screening in Greek asymptomatic women.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose was to assess the validity and reliability of health belief model variables (perceived benefits, perceived barriers, and self-efficacy beliefs) that are often the target of mammography screening interventions. METHODS: Based on Champion's health belief model scales, questionnaire data were obtained from a nationally representative sample of 408 Greek women, 40 years of age or older and with no personal history of cancer. RESULTS: Using confirmatory factor analysis, we found all items to load significantly on their respective factors. Standardized factor loadings ranged…

Anticipation of deteriorating health and information avoidance.

We integrate anticipatory utility and endogenous beliefs about future negative health shocks into a life-cycle model of physiological aging. Individuals care about their future utility derived from their health status and form endogenous beliefs about the probability of a negative health shock. We calibrate the model with data from gerontology and use the model to predict medical testing decisions of individuals. We find that anticipation in combination with endogenous beliefs provides a quantitatively strong motive to avoid medical testing for Huntington's disease, which explains the low test

Injuries and use of protective equipment among college in-line skaters.

In-line skating injuries and protective gear use were explored in a sample of college students (n = 217). A minority of respondents wore protective gear. One third of skaters had experienced at least one minor injury, and a smaller percentage had experienced fractures or head injuries. Most minor injuries occurred during the first 1-2 times skating, while more serious injuries tended to occur after at least 50 times on in-line skates. Psychosocial predictors of protective gear use were explored. Four major Health Belief Model constructs (perceived barriers to wearing gear, perceived susceptibi…

Supernatural explanatory models of health and illness and healthcare use in China among men who have sex with men.

People's beliefs in supernatural explanatory models of health and illness - beliefs in divine and/or supernatural forces to inform how they perceive, interpret, and respond to health and illness - may have important implications for their use of healthcare services, especially among individuals with lower socioeconomic status (SES). However, the relevance of such research for contexts with strong Confucian and Buddhist traditions and sexual minority subpopulations remains unclear. We conducted a nation-wide survey in China of 503 men who have sex with men (MSM) to test hypotheses examining how

The role of health beliefs in COVID-19 vaccination acceptance: A Meta-analysis.

This study employed a meta-analytic approach to examine the relationships between the Health Belief Model (HBM) constructs and COVID-19 vaccination acceptance. A comprehensive literature search identified 77 eligible studies with a combined sample size of 83,995 participants. Quantitative synthesis of the extracted data revealed that perceived benefits (r = 0.40) was the strongest positive predictor of individuals' vaccine acceptance, indicating a medium-to-large effect. Perceived severity (r = 0.17) and susceptibility (r = 0.18) to COVID-19 were also significant positive predictors, each with…

Exercise Behavior to Prevent Osteoporosis.

BACKGROUND: Although the benefits of exercise in osteoporosis prevention are well documented, research indicates that women's engagement in physical activity remains suboptimal. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to assess the Health Belief Model constructs and the self-regulation concept derived from Social Cognitive Theory concerning exercise behaviors for osteoporosis prevention. METHODS: The study used a cross-sectional survey of 250 women who were premenopausal (ages 30-49 years). The data collection instruments were comprised of health beliefs, self-regulation, awareness, and exerci…

The impact of health beliefs on treatment decision conflict through treatment expectations mediation in patients with lumbar disc herniation.

Low back pain is a leading cause of disability worldwide. Lumbar disc herniation (LDH), a prevalent etiology of low back pain, has various treatment options. This study investigated the impact of health beliefs on decision conflict regarding treatment choices in patients with LDH. A cross-sectional survey was administered to 737 patients with LDH. Three key constructs were assessed using validated instruments: health beliefs (Health Belief Scale), decision conflict (Decision Conflict scale), and treatment expectations (Treatment Expectation Questionnaire). The goodness-of-fit of the hypothesiz
