Inventory of the Recommendations for Patients with Pollen Allergies and Evaluation of Their Scientific Relevance.

Pollens are responsible for allergic rhinitis, conjunctivitis, and asthma. The incidence of these diseases, which have adversely impacted the social and professional lives of people who are allergic to pollen, has tripled in the past 25 years. Official institutes, health care institutions, public interest groups, and mainstream news media provide people who are allergic to pollen with advice aimed at reducing their symptoms. The aim of this work was to provide an inventory of the prevention guidelines in the world and to evaluate their scientific relevance. A PubMed search was carried out usin

Inherited disorders in the conversion of methionine to homocysteine.

During the last decade much important new information relating to the metabolic pathway from methionine to homocysteine has been gained. Interest has been stimulated by the discovery of two novel disorders, glycine N-methyltransferase deficiency and S-adenosylhomocysteine hydrolase deficiency. Another disorder in this pathway, methionine adenosyltransferase deficiency, has been increasingly detected, thanks to the expansion of newborn screening programmes by tandem mass spectrometry technology. These significant steps allow important insight into the pathogenesis of these three disorders, as w

Evidence-based recommendations for monitoring bone disease and the response to enzyme replacement therapy in Gaucher patients.

BACKGROUND: Bone disease is a serious complication of Gaucher disease. Untreated, it can result in pain, permanent bone damage and disability. Enzyme replacement therapy reverses many of the clinical signs of Gaucher bone disease but early assessment and treatment, and regular monitoring, are essential in optimising outcomes. SCOPE: In September 2005, a group of European experts met to review current knowledge and identify best practice and unmet needs in the monitoring of Gaucher bone disease and the response to enzyme replacement therapy. METHODS: Medline searches of peer-reviewed literatu

Inadequate protection against yellow fever of children visiting endemic areas.

The guidelines of the World Health Organization call for immunization against yellow fever at least 10 days before travel to endemic areas. The goal of this study was to determine whether these guidelines have been applied in 2 travel clinic settings in teaching hospitals in Israel and the United Kingdom specifically for children traveling to endemic areas. Two groups of children aged 9 months to 15 years (n = 98), who were planning to travel to yellow fever-endemic areas, were evaluated regarding characteristics related to the administration of yellow fever vaccine before travel. Overall, 19

A Multifaceted Intervention to Reduce Pediatric Acid-Suppressant Prescriptions for Gastroesophageal Reflux: What Have We Learned?

OBJECTIVE: Acid-suppressant prescriptions for children have increased over past decades, despite guideline recommendations to prescribe prudently. Acid suppressants are often ineffective and may lead to side effects. We aimed to reduce inappropriate acid-suppressant prescriptions for gastroesophageal reflux in a tertiary care setting through active implementation of national guideline recommendations and to evaluate intervention effect. METHODS: Implementation consisted of 2 steps. First, all pediatric clinicians in an academic hospital received information on appropriate acid-suppressant pre

Effectiveness of a guideline implementation tool for supporting management of mental health complications after mild traumatic brain injury in primary care: protocol for a randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Mental health problems frequently interfere with recovery from mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) but are under-recognised and undertreated. Consistent implementation of clinical practice guidelines for proactive detection and treatment of mental health complications after mTBI will require evidence-based knowledge translation strategies. This study aims to determine if a guideline implementation tool can reduce the risk of mental health complications following mTBI. If effective, our guideline implementation tool could be readily scaled up and/or adapted to other healthcare sett

The perinatal bereavement project: development and evaluation of supportive guidelines for families experiencing stillbirth and neonatal death in Southeast Brazil-a quasi-experimental before-and-after study.

BACKGROUND: For most parents, getting pregnant means having a child. Generally, the couple outlines plans and has expectations regarding the baby. When these plans are interrupted because of a perinatal loss, it turns out to be a traumatic experience for the family. Validating the grief of these losses has been a challenge to Brazilian society, which is evident considering the childbirth care offered to bereaved families in maternity wards. Positively assessed care that brings physical and emotional memories about the baby has a positive impact on the bereavement process that family undergoes.

Core components of a specialty-wide model of care for transition to adult healthcare services: a systematic review of guidelines.

BACKGROUND: Young people with complex healthcare needs diagnosed in childhood require transition to adult services. Without a structured process for transition, the transfer of care is a challenging event for young people during a vulnerable period of their lives. Loss to follow-up can lead to long-term health complications. We conducted a specialty-wide systematic guideline review of clinical practice guidelines on transition care to assist health organisations to develop a model of care for transition services that can apply across medical specialties by synthesising best-practice internatio

Cross-sectional assessment of government health center needs to implement long-acting reversible contraception services in rural Rwanda.

BACKGROUND: There is unmet need for family planning in Rwanda. We previously developed an evidence-based couples' family planning counseling (C)FPC program in the capital city that combines: (1) fertility goal-based family planning counseling with a focus on long-acting reversible contraceptive (LARC) for couples wishing to delay pregnancy; (2) health center capacity building for provision of LARC methods, and (3) LARC promotion by community health workers (CHW) trained in community-based provision of oral and injectable contraception. From 2015 to 2016, this service was integrated into eight
