Health Services Use Among Jailed Women with Alcohol Use Disorders.

Correctional facilities now house unprecedented numbers of women with complex treatment needs. This investigation applied the Behavioral Model for Vulnerable Populations to study 168 jailed women with alcohol use disorders. It described the sample's predisposing (age, race, victimization), enabling (health insurance), and need (self-reported medical, substance use, and mental health problems) factors and examined associations of these factors with pre-incarceration services utilization. Most participants had clinically significant levels of depression and PTSD symptoms, most took psychiatric m

Pharmacy-Based Travel Health Services: State Approaches to Prescriptive Authority.

Pharmacists have provided travel health services in some capacity for more than 25 years. The ability of pharmacists to autonomously prescribe travel medications is growing. Three states (California, Idaho, and New Mexico) allow pharmacists to autonomously prescribe medications for international travel using the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Yellow Book as a guide. Idaho also allows pharmacists to autonomously prescribe select medications appropriate to domestic travel (motion sickness prevention and Lyme disease prophylaxis), and Florida allows for the prescribing of drugs for mo

Caregiver perceptions about mental health services after child sexual abuse.

The objective of this study was to describe caregiver perceptions about mental health services (MHS) after child sexual abuse (CSA) and to explore factors that affected whether their children linked to services. We conducted semi-structured, in-person interviews with 22 non-offending caregivers of suspected CSA victims<13 years old seen at a child advocacy center in Philadelphia. Purposive sampling was used to recruit caregivers who had (n=12) and had not (n=10) linked their children to MHS. Guided by the Health Belief Model framework, interviews assessed perceptions about: CSA severity, the c

Influence of living arrangements on health services utilisation in Australia.

BACKGROUND: The number of people living alone is increasing markedly. Others live as couples only, couples with child(ren) and single adult with child(ren). Health service utilisation could differ for people in different living arrangements as a result of varying levels of risk factors, health status, access to informal care and decision-making for accessing care. OBJECTIVE: To identify the association between living arrangements and health service use. METHODS: The Australian Bureau of Statistics' National Health Survey 2001 data for people 18-65 years old were analysed for household compos

Health services utilization during terminal illness in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

OBJECTIVES We describe modern and alternative health services use in terminal illness of adults, and assess whether utilization patterns of TB/AIDS patients are distinct from those of patients suffering from other illnesses. METHODS Data are from post-mortem interviews with close relatives or caretakers of the deceased. We provide descriptive statistics of health care utilization in adults and discuss their covariates in multivariate analyses. RESULTS Over 85% of terminally sick patients visited a modern medical facility, but less than 40% spent more than 24 hours in a medical facility and onl

The impact of global nursing migration on health services delivery.

A number of common issues and challenges face every country; however, their impact varies greatly across different countries. A particular concern in relation to nurse migration is its effect on adding to the imbalance in nursing resources that already exists in different regions and different countries. The number of nurses recruited into developed countries has increased significantly during the past decade, particularly from developing countries. Understanding and addressing the impact of migration requires not only examining what pulls nurses into destination countries but also what pushes

Indicators predicting use of mental health services in Piedmont, Italy.

BACKGROUND: Since the 1978 Italian reform, an integrated network of community mental health services has been introduced. With few exceptions, research on determinants of mental health service use at the district level has focused on inpatient activities and social deprivation indicators. The European Psychiatric Care Assessment Team (EPCAT) standardized methodology allows for an evidence-based comparison of mental health systems between geographical areas. AIMS: To compare service provision and utilization between local catchment areas; to explore quantitative relationships between residenti

Does relative deprivation predict the need for mental health services?

BACKGROUND: Several studies postulate that psychological conditions may contribute to the link between low relative income and poor health, but no one has directly tested the relationship between relative deprivation and mental health disorders. In this paper, we investigate whether low income relative to a reference group is associated with a higher probability of depressive disorders or anxiety disorders. Reference groups are defined using groups of individuals with similar demographic and geographic characteristics. We hypothesize that perceptions of low social status relative to one's refe

Providing mental health services to Arab Americans: recommendations and considerations.

Arab Americans are an extremely heterogeneous and frequently misunderstood group whose unique characteristics and cultural heritage have received little attention in the mental health literature. To effectively address the needs of Arab Americans, mental health professionals need to be aware of their own biases and misperceptions regarding Arab Americans, have an accurate understanding of Arab cultural and sociopolitical backgrounds, and be able to identify culturally appropriate interventions for use with Arab American clients. This article reviews common stereotyped beliefs many Americans ha

Developing community mental health services for children in South Africa.

As a result of South Africa's Apartheid history, mental health care for black people, especially in rural areas, has been grossly inadequate and even non-existent in many areas. Children have been severely neglected in this regard. This paper describes an attempt by clinical psychologists to develop a community intervention programme for children with emotional problems. From their hospital base the authors set out, on a monthly basis, to outlying areas up to 250 km away to (1) train primary care nurses and other personnel in the basic techniques of identifying and dealing with uncomplicated p

[Counseling concepts and services of health-associated self-help initiatives].

Self-help groups formed increased since the beginning of the eighties; in the field of health especially chronically ill persons met to cope with their daily illness-related problems. As these self-help-initiatives developed into suppliers of services this study should provide information about the special quality of counselling concepts and other services. A telephone interview with 224 self-help initiatives revealed a high proportion of counselling activity (75%). Based on the concept of Grounded Theory a qualitative analysis shows that the perspectives "service provision" and "social suppor

Evaluation in the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.

The evaluation policy of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) is described in this article. Three studies are presented that exemplify SAMHSA's evaluations. These include evaluations of a program to prevent substance abuse among pregnant and postpartum women and their infants; a Job Corps treatment enrichment program; and the McKinney program for homeless persons with severe mental illnesses. Each of these evaluations demonstrated the effectiveness of the programs in reducing substance abuse or homelessness and in improving the health and well-being of the con

Use of traditional and orthodox health services in urban Zimbabwe.

BACKGROUND: Health care in Zimbabwe is provided by both orthodox and traditional care providers. With formal medical services under economic strain it is important to understand the extent of consulting with traditional care providers and their effectiveness. METHODS: A cross-sectional community survey recorded consultations and self-treatment for episodes of illness among 1251 individuals in 222 households randomly selected in two high-density suburbs of Harare, Zimbabwe. Three dependent variables (illness experience, consultation behaviour and choice of care provider) were analysed against
