Exploring the Relationship between Persons with Hearing Loss/Deafness and Their Hearing Dogs.

The reported positive outcomes of animal-assisted services have led to an emerging interest in many different aspects of human-animal interactions. The influence of an assistance animal is thought to encompass several psychosocial domains in the life of a person with a significant health impairment. However, little is known about the mechanisms underlying the relationship between Hearing Dogs and their owners. A prospective study design using a written questionnaire method was utilized to survey 58 current and 23 prospective Australian Lions Hearing Dogs owners. The Pet Expectations Inventory …

The Association of Hearing Loss With Active Music Enjoyment in Hearing Aid Users.

OBJECTIVE: Hearing aids (HAs) are designed for speech rather than music listening. The impact of HAs on music enjoyment is poorly studied. We examine the effect of HAs on active music enjoyment in individuals with varying levels of hearing loss (HL). STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. SETTING: Tertiary medical center and community. METHODS: Adult (≥18 years) bilateral HA users and normal hearing (NH) controls actively listened to musical stimuli and rated their enjoyment across 3 measures (pleasantness, musicality, naturalness) with and without HAs using a visual analog scale. Multivariab…

Neuroprotective factors and incident hearing impairment in the epidemiology of hearing loss study.

OBJECTIVE: Hearing impairment (HI) is common in aging adults. Aldosterone, insulin-like growth factor (IGF1), and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) have been identified as potentially protective of hearing. The present study aims to investigate these relationships. METHODS: The Epidemiology of Hearing Loss Study is a longitudinal population-based study of aging in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin, that began in 1993. Baseline for the present investigation is the 1998 to 2000 phase. Follow-up exams occurred approximately every 5 years, with the most recent occurring from 2013 to 2016. Hearing was …

The Influence of Hearing Aid Use on Outcomes of Children With Mild Hearing Loss.

PURPOSE: This study examined the effects of consistent hearing aid (HA) use on outcomes in children with mild hearing loss (HL). METHOD: Five- or 7-year-old children with mild HL were separated into 3 groups on the basis of patterns of daily HA use. Using analyses of variance, we compared outcomes between groups on speech and language tests and a speech perception in noise task. Regression models were used to investigate the influence of cumulative auditory experience (audibility, early intervention, HA use) on outcomes. RESULTS: Full-time HA users demonstrated significantly higher scores on…

Do I hear what you hear? Two cases and discussion.

It is fascinating to note the astute observations of clinicians almost a century ago. Familial hematuria was described in 1902 by Dr. Leonard Guthrie. Dr. Cecil Alport refined the disease description in 1927. (Both papers are still available online.) Applications for life insurance were recently received on two women who had Alport syndrome as a known diagnosis. The cases will be presented and used as a springboard to discuss Alport syndrome and benign familial hematuria (BFH).

[Status of hearing aid use by children in schools for the hearing impaired and deaf].

To evaluate and possibly improve the hearing aid fittings of children attending the Westphalian School for the Hearing Impaired or the Westphalian School for the Deaf, regular pedaudiologic consulting hours were established at both schools. During a 2-year period, 115 children were examined once, 35 children twice, and 5 children three times. The examinations comprised ear microscopy, audiometry, and a check of the hearing aids with a 0.6-cm3 coupler (children up to 7 years) or 2-cm3 coupler, respectively. The following criteria were used to assess the quality of the hearing aid setting: statu…

Cooperation of hearing-impaired elderly subjects for participation in a hearing screening program.

Presbyacusis, the auditory disorder which accompanies the aging process, is well known. However, the practical assistance available to alleviate the breakdown in the communication ability of the older person is unsatisfactory, and provision for public awareness of a rehabilitation strategy has not yet been established in many countries. Four hundred and ninety-eight elderly subjects, aged 65-94 years, were hearing tested in different setups, a geriatric nursing home and in the community. It was found that the need for rehabilitation was high and the willingness to participate in a hearing scre…

Effects of Hearing Aids in a Simulated Open-Plan Office: A Laboratory Study Involving Normal-Hearing Participants and Simulated Hearing Loss.

OBJECTIVE: Over the past decade, the prevalence of hearing aid users in open-plan offices has risen significantly. This study investigates the potential effects of wearing hearing aids on cognitive performance and psychological state in noisy office environments. METHODS: A laboratory experiment involved 46 normal-hearing participants. Four sound conditions mixed speech with open-plan office noise at varying signal-to-noise ratios. Stimuli were recorded in a semi-anechoic room using an acoustic dummy head with and without hearing aids, and moderate hearing loss was simulated. Participants per…

Hearing Benefit and Rated Satisfaction in Children with Unilateral Conductive Hearing Loss Using a Transcutaneous Magnetic-Coupled Bone-Conduction Hearing Aid.

BACKGROUND: Bilateral hearing is important for learning, development, and function in complex everyday environments. Children with conductive and mixed hearing loss (HL) have been treated for years with percutaneous coupling through an abutment, which achieves powerful output, but the implant site is susceptible to skin reactions and trauma. To overcome these complications, transcutaneous magnetic coupling systems were recently introduced. PURPOSE: The purpose of the study was to evaluate whether the new transcutaneous magnetic coupling is an effective coupling paradigm for bone-conduction he…
