Optimum side for fitting a monaural hearing aid. 1. Patients' preference.

The criteria generally used to decide in which ear to fit a monaural hearing aid are based on theory or anecdote and have not been verified by experimental observation. In this study to determine optimum side of fitting, 58 new hearing aid users were fitted with a hearing aid in one ear for 10 weeks, and then fitted in the other ear for a further 10 weeks. Subsequently, the subjects were asked their preference for side of hearing aid use and their reasons for this preference. 30 (52%) subjects reported better hearing with their aid in one ear than in the other; 24 (80%) of these preferred the

Management of non-organic hearing loss in children - A case study.

A 10 year-old girl was admitted due to the claim of progressively developing hearing loss. The impedance audiometry showed no abnormalities but it was impossible to obtain reliable outcomes during pure tone audiometry assessment. The girl was additionally sent for speech audiometry, indicating a bilateral hearing loss and objective evaluations such as distortion product otoacoustic emissions and auditory brainstem responses, which results indicated a normal hearing. On the second day, repeated subjective audiometric tests showed also normal hearing, despite constantly reported hearing loss. Af

[The active middle ear implant for the rehabilitation of sensorineural, mixed and conductive hearing losses].

Active middle ear implants, such as the Vibrant Soundbridge, are used as an important part in the rehabilitation of sensorineural, conductive hearing, or mixed hearing loss. The attachment of the Vibrant Soundbridge at the round window and the usage of the Vibroplasty couplers strongly expanded the application of the Vibrant Soundbridge. The Vibrant Soundbridge is developed for patients who have an intolerance to hearing aids and a moderate to profound sensorineural hearing loss. The VSB also provides an optimal solution for patients with failed middle ear reconstructions or patients with atres

Evaluation of audiovestibular status in leprosy.

One hundred twenty five cases of lepromatous leprosy and 25 cases of tuberculoid leprosy were investigated for audiovestibular status. Impaired hearing was detected in 52 percent and vestibular hypofuction in 7.2 per cent of lepromatous cases. Conductive deafness was due to eustachian tube catarrh secondary to atrophic rhinitis associated with the disease. The perceptive deafness and vestibular hypofuction were due to end organ lesion probably due to E.N.L. reaction. The vestibulococlear nerve involvement was considered to be unlikely. In tuberculoid leprosy derangement in hearing was not obse

Gap detection and ear of presentation: examination of disparate findings: re: Sininger Y.S., & de Bode, S. (2008). Asymmetry of temporal processing in listeners with normal hearing and unilaterally deaf subjects. Ear Hear 29, 228-238.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this Letter is to address incongruent findings reported in two current papers concerning an ear advantage for gap detection. The methodology of one of the studies was closely replicated in order to determine whether those data were confounded by a floor effect. A novel methodology not prone to a floor effect was also implemented to test for an ear advantage. DESIGN: In the replication of one of the studies, gap detection was measured for three stimuli: a 400-Hz tone, a 4000-Hz tone, and a broad band noise. Temporal gaps were positioned at the midpoints of 500-ms wav

Two new otolaryngologic findings in child abuse.

We reviewed cases of early childhood hoarseness caused by vocal nodules and functional hearing loss as being possible manifestations of child abuse. This is a retrospective review set in two urban referral centers. The patients consisted of four children with vocal nodules and known histories of abuse, and four children with functional hearing loss and histories suggestive of abuse. Vocal nodules or functional hearing loss may be indicators of an abusive situation. Child abuse should be considered in the differential diagnosis of these problems.

Functional hearing impairment common in Parkinson's disease: Insights from a pilot study.

INTRODUCTION: Hearing impairments in Parkinson's Disease (PD) have received limited attention in the past, possibly because PD patients often report no perceived hearing disability, yet negative consequences of hearing impairment might aggravate communication difficulties and social withdrawal. OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to investigate functional hearing (speech in noise recognition) in PD and evaluate its relationship to neuropsychiatric symptoms, cognition and quality of life. METHODS: Participants with PD were recruited in a tertiary movement disorder clinic. Demographic, audiological, neurop

Associations Between Paternal Play and Executive Function in Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children.

PURPOSE: Responsive and dynamic aspects of father-child play are associated with behavioral and neurocognitive development in children and could represent an important contributor to executive function (EF) skills for children who are deaf and hard of hearing (DHH). This study examined associations between paternal behaviors during play and EF skills of DHH children and children with typical hearing (TH). METHOD: Father-child dyads in families with DHH children (n = 30) and TH children (n = 29) participated in a 15-min video-recorded free-play session that was coded for parental behaviors usi

Viral causes of hearing loss: a review for hearing health professionals.

A number of viral infections can cause hearing loss. Hearing loss induced by these viruses can be congenital or acquired, unilateral or bilateral. Certain viral infections can directly damage inner ear structures, others can induce inflammatory responses which then cause this damage, and still others can increase susceptibility or bacterial or fungal infection, leading to hearing loss. Typically, virus-induced hearing loss is sensorineural, although conductive and mixed hearing losses can be seen following infection with certain viruses. Occasionally, recovery of hearing after these infections

Functional consequences of extended high frequency hearing impairment: Evidence from the speech, spatial, and qualities of hearing scale.

Hearing loss in the extended high frequencies, despite a normal audiogram, could affect speech-in-noise recognition. However, it is not known if extended high frequency (EHF) hearing loss is associated with everyday listening and communication deficits. The present study aimed to determine the functional effects of impaired EHF hearing among adults using the Speech, Spatial, and Qualities of Hearing Scale (SSQ). A secondary objective was to evaluate the relationship between objective (speech-in-noise recognition) and subjective (SSQ) measures of hearing function. Listeners with EHF hearing los

[Hearing in old age. Hearing loss is never physiologic].

The common form of hardness of hearing seen in old age is not, in the first instance, due to physiological age-related changes as is, for example, presbyopia, but rather to a complex sensorineural pattern of injury. The underlying causes are not yet fully understood. Typical medical risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes mellitus, etc. apparently play a smaller role than increasing environmental noise and modern life styles. The various forms of presbyacusis and their presentation in the pure tone audiogram are discussed.

Effects of earmold type on ability to locate sounds when wearing hearing aids.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether the choice of earmold type can affect aided auditory localization. HYPOTHESES: 1) for sensorineural hearing losses with good low-frequency hearing (Low group, n = 10), the use of open earmolds could avoid decrements in horizontal plane localization found with closed (occluding) earmolds; 2) for sensorineural losses with good high-frequency hearing (High group, n = 12), the use of open earmolds could result in better vertical plane localization than could the use of closed earmolds; and 3) for conductive/mixed hearing losses (CM group, n = 19), the choice of ear

A stepwise approach to the diagnosis and treatment of hereditary hearing loss.

What To Do Do suspect a genetic cause in all cases of hearing loss. Do develop a working knowledge of common types of HHI that you may draw on to aid in diagnosis. Do think of HHI when the audiogram reveals a hearing loss with a "cookie bite" configuration. Do refer the infant to a geneticist in cases where you suspect a syndromic HHI, a nonsyndromic HHI, and in cases of "cryptogenic" hearing loss where an underlying HHI may be present. Often, the associated symptoms are subtle and best detected by a professional who deals with these issues on a daily basis. Do get the infant or family plugged

Cortical deafness of following bilateral temporal lobe stroke.

Cortical deafness is an extremely rare clinical manifestation that originates mainly from bilateral cortical lesions in the primary auditory cortex. Its main clinical manifestation is the bilateral sudden loss of hearing. Diagnosis is difficulty due to its rarity and similarity with other language and communication disorders, such as Wernicke's aphasia, auditory agnosia or verbal deafness. Herein, we present a case report of a young woman with a sudden bilateral loss of auditory comprehension. Initially, a psychiatric nature of the disorder was considered, but the persistence of the symptoms,

Hyperbaric oxygen treatment restores sudden hearing loss in a patient with Fabry disease.

Fabry disease is an X-linked inherited disorder of glycosphingolipid metabolism due to the deficient activity of a lysosomal enzyme, alpha-galactosidase A. The resultant systemic accumulation of sphingolipids can lead to progressive and sudden hearing loss alongside renal, cardiac and cerebrovascular complications. Although replacement therapy seems to be beneficial for cochlear function, few data are available regarding treatment of sudden hearing loss. This case report describes the course of a unilateral sudden hearing loss in a young (15-year-old) male patient and its improvement following

Evaluation of intake of aged garlic extract and organosulfur compounds on progressive hearing loss in DBA/2J mice.

Garlic is rich in organosulfur compounds with high antioxidant capacity and is known to have various health benefits. Aged garlic is a particularly effective source of these active compounds because it contains fewer toxic components. This study evaluated the effects of S-allyl cysteine (SAC), a major functional organosulfur compound in garlic, and aged garlic extract (AGE) on the suppression of progressive hearing loss. SAC and AGE were dissolved in drinking water at 1% (w/w) and administered to DBA/2J mice, a model of early progressive hearing loss, for 12 weeks, starting at 4 weeks of age.

A Prognostic Model to Predict Hearing Recovery in Patients With Idiopathic Sudden Onset Sensorineural Hearing Loss.

IMPORTANCE: The prognosis of idiopathic sudden onset sensorineural hearing loss (iSSNHL) is uncertain, which creates challenges in clinical decision-making for ear, nose, and throat (ENT) physicians and adds to the burden of the condition experienced by patients. OBJECTIVE: To develop and internally validate a prognostic model for hearing recovery among patients with iSSNHL to support ENT surgeons in making informed and individualized treatment decisions. DESIGN, SETTINGS, AND PARTICIPANTS: This prognostic study and model used cohort data from the Sudden Onset Sensorineural Hearing Loss stud
