Hearing in the elderly: the Framingham cohort, 1983-1985. Part I. Basic audiometric test results.

Many studies have documented the decline in auditory function with age. We broaden that data base in this the first of a series of reports emanating from the auditory testing of the Framingham cohort during biennial exam 18. The results of the auditory questionnaire, hearing sensitivity, acoustic compliance measures, and word recognition tests obtained from 1662 men and women in their 60th through 90th decades are presented. Pure-tone thresholds increased with age but the rate of change with age did not differ by gender even though men had poorer threshold sensitivity. Maximum word recognition

Did you hear about HIV self-testing? HIV self-testing awareness after community-based HIVST distribution in rural Zimbabwe.

BACKGROUND: Several trials of community-based HIV self-testing (HIVST) provide evidence on the acceptability and feasibility of campaign-style distribution to reach first-time testers, men and adolescents. However, we do not know how many remain unaware of HIVST after distribution campaigns, and who these individuals are. Here we look at factors associated with never having heard of HIVST after community-based campaign-style HIVST distribution in rural Zimbabwe between September 2016 and July 2017. METHODS: Analysis of representative population-based trial survey data collected from 7146 indi

New speech tests reveal benefit of wide-dynamic-range, fast-acting compression for consonant discrimination in children with moderate-to-profound hearing loss.

Fast-acting, wide-dynamic-range compression (WDRC) has been shown to give better discrimination of soft speech and shouted speech than linear amplification for moderately hearing-impaired young adults. For severe and profound hearing losses, higher compression ratios are needed. The resultant distortion of the temporal envelope and reduced modulation depth may offset improvements in audibility offered by WDRC. This study compares the effectiveness of WDRC and linear amplification for children with different degrees of hearing loss. Pre-recorded tests of closed-set consonant confusions and open

Maternal oral glucose tolerance test parameters and neonatal hearing screening outcomes: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) has been associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes and may influence fetal neurosensory development, particularly auditory function. However, evidence regarding its effect on neonatal hearing screening remains inconsistent. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the association between maternal Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT) glucose levels (fasting, 60-minute, and 120-minute) and neonatal hearing screening outcomes, and to explore whether maternal glycemic status, including GDM, affects early auditory function in newborns. DESIGN: Retrospective observati

From Clinic to Reality: Integrating Sound Field Testing and Hearing Quality Measures in Cochlear Implant Users.

Background: Traditional audiological assessment often does not properly reflect the challenges experienced by cochlear implant (CI) users in complex listening environments. Deficits in speech recognition and sound localization ability persist despite clinically satisfactory audiometric thresholds. Objective: The objective of this study is to evaluate the impact of acoustic environment complexity on speech recognition and sound localization ability in CI users compared to normal-hearing (NH) individuals and to assess subjective auditory performance using validated questionnaires. Methods: Thirt

Digits-In-Noise Hearing Test Using Text-to-Speech and Automatic Speech Recognition: Proof-of-Concept Study.

This proof-of-concept study evaluated the implementation of a digits-in-noise test we call the 'AI-powered test' that used text-to-speech (TTS) and automatic speech recognition (ASR). Two other digits-in-noise tests formed the baselines for comparison: the 'keyboard-based test' which used the same configurations as the AI-powered test, and the 'independent test', a third-party-sourced test not modified by us. The validity of the AI-powered test was evaluated by measuring its difference from the independent test and comparing it with the baseline, which was the difference between the Keyboard-b

Ankle Audiometry: A Clinical Test for the Enhanced Hearing Sensitivity for Body Sounds in Superior Canal Dehiscence Syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to develop a clinical test for body sounds' hypersensitivity in superior canal dehiscence syndrome (SCDS). METHOD: Case-control study, 20 patients affected by SCDS and body sounds' hypersensitivity and 20 control matched subjects tested with a new test called ankle audiometry (AA). The AA consisted of a psychoacoustic hearing test in which the stimulus was substituted by a controlled bone vibration at 125, 250, 500, and 750 Hz, delivered at the medial malleolus by a steel spring-attached bone transducer prototype B250. For each subject, it was defined a

Increased diagnostic yield in a cohort of hearing loss families using a comprehensive stepwise strategy of molecular testing.

Hearing loss is one of the most common sensory disorders in humans. This study proposes a stepwise strategy of deafness gene detection using multiplex PCR combined with high-throughput sequencing, Sanger sequencing, multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification (MLPA), and whole-exome sequencing (WES) to explore its application in molecular diagnosis of hearing loss families. A total of 152 families with hearing loss were included in this study, the highest overall diagnosis rate was 73% (111/152). The diagnosis rate of multiplex PCR combined with high-throughput sequencing was 52.6% (80/15
