Cardiovascular Exercise Physiology Under Hypoxia, Microgravity, and Heat Stress: A Review with Public Health Implications.

Aerobic exercise capacity, best quantified by maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max), varies between individuals and is dependent on cardiac output (CO) and oxygen uptake in the periphery (a-vO2 diff). Environmental stressors like hypoxia, microgravity, and heat negatively impact these parameters, thereby reducing aerobic exercise capacity. However, in response to acute and chronic exposures to these environments, compensatory processes serve to counteract reductions in VO2max. In hypoxic environments, reduced oxygen partial pressure (PO2) leads to hypoxic pulmonary vasoconstriction (HPV) and a diffus

Zinc as a central modulator of heat stress-induced intestinal and systemic dysfunction in poultry.

Heat stress (HS) is a major environmental challenge in modern poultry production, where high metabolic heat output and intensive genetic selection increase vulnerability to thermal load. Beyond impairing thermoregulation and feed intake, HS disrupts intestinal barrier integrity, induces oxidative stress and inflammation, and promotes systemic metabolic dysregulation. The gastrointestinal tract has therefore emerged as a central target and amplifier of HS-induced pathology, highlighting the importance of gut-focused nutritional interventions. Zinc (Zn), an essential trace element with broad cat

Modeling changes in rumination time and milk yield to detect the onset of heat stress in lactating dairy cows of different physiological traits.

Determining the temperature-humidity index (THI) threshold for the onset of heat stress (HS) can serve as a decision-making tool in HS mitigation management in dairy cows. Although classic thresholds are based on production losses, other physiological and behavioral changes may appear at lower THI. The objective of this observational study was to model the changes of daily rumination time (RT) and milk yield (MY) of lactating dairy cows to identify potential HS thresholds of different indicators. Daily RT and MY were collected from Chinese Holstein cows of 1,007 cow-lactations (532 ± 72.8 min/

Bovine testicular heat stress: From climate change to effects on microRNA profile.

Heat stress is caused by exposure of animals to high temperatures and humidity, outside their thermal comfort zone. This can have negative outcomes, including adversely affecting general well-being and reducing productive and reproductive performance. In males, heat stress can disrupt testicular thermoregulation, with deleterious effects on spermatogenesis and consequently, decreases in sperm quality and fertility potential. Thus, high environmental temperature is considered one of the most important factors that predisposes bulls to subfertility and has already been the subject of many studie

Protective effects of Lactobacillus on heat stress-induced intestinal injury in finisher broilers by regulating gut microbiota and stimulating epithelial development.

Heat stress (HS) is a critical challenge in broilers due to the high metabolic rate and lack of sweat glands. Results from this study show that implementing a cyclic chronic HS (34 °C for 7 h/d) to finisher broilers decreased the diversity of cecal microbiota and impaired intestinal barrier, resulting in gut leak and decreased body weight (both P < 0.05). These alterations might be related to inflammatory outbursts and the retarded proliferation of intestinal epithelial cells (IECs) according to the transcriptome analysis. Considering the potential beneficial properties of Lactobacillus on int

Heat stress in a temperate climate leads to adapted sensor-based behavioral patterns of dairy cows.

Most research on heat stress has focused on (sub)tropical climates. The effects of higher ambient temperatures on the daily behavior of dairy cows in a maritime and temperate climate are less studied. With this retrospective observational study, we address that gap by associating the daily time budgets of dairy cows in the Netherlands with daily temperature and temperature-humidity index (THI) variables. During a period of 4 years, cows on 8 commercial dairy farms in the Netherlands were equipped with neck and leg sensors to collect data from 4,345 cow lactations regarding their daily time bud

[New approaches in preventing health risks and excess mortality of older persons during extreme heat].

More and longer heatwaves can be expected in Germany as a consequence of climate change. Older persons are predominantly threatened with the associated health-related problems and premature death. So far, heat action plans have failed to prevent excess mortality. Therefore, new approaches of prevention must be found.General practitioner, ambulant care, hospital, and nursing home settings were investigated in a project funded by the German ministry of health. Workshops were conducted and the results are presented here.Sufficient knowledge and continuous care are available in hospitals and nursi

[Acute heat stress increases HSP70 expression in the testis, epididymis and vas deferens of adult male mice].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of acute heat stress on the expression patterns of heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) in the testis, epididymis and vas deferens of adult male mice. METHODS: Thirty-two 8-week-old male mice were randomly divided into a control and 3 heat stress groups. After a week of pretreatment, the latter 3 groups were exposed to heat stress at (39 +/- 0.5) degrees C for 0.5, 1 and 3 hours, respectively, followed immediately by collection of the blood and determination of glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (GOT) concentration. Sperm suspension was made from one epididymis f

Impaired DNAJB2 Response to Heat Shock in Fibroblasts from a Neuropathy Patient with DNAJB2/HSJ1 Mutation: Cystamine as a Potential Therapeutic Intervention.

Background and Objectives: Neuropathy is a debilitating disorder characterized by peripheral nerve dysfunction and damage to sensory, motor, and autonomic neurons and their axons. While homozygous mutations in DNAJB2/HSJ1 have been linked to early-onset neuropathy, a heterozygous DNAJB2 c.823+6C>T was discovered in an adult patient with severe sensory-motor polyneuropathy. This mutation is predicted to affect both isoforms of the protein. DNAJB2 (HSP40), a key member of the heat shock protein family, plays a critical role in cellular protection and stress, including response to heat shock. DNA

A Comparison Between Normal and Reddened Mung Bean Soup: Beneficial Effects on the Regulation of Oxidative Stress, Inflammation, and Gut Microbiota in Mice with Heat Stress-Induced Damages.

BACKGROUND: Mung bean soup (MBS), as a common form of mung bean consumption, is widely consumed in folk to relieve summer heat. However, MBS is prone to red discoloration during cooking and storage. Furthermore, how this color change affects its phenolic compounds composition and bioactivity remains poorly understood. OBJECTIVES: Herein, this study systematically compared the phenolic profiles and heat stress (HS)-alleviating effects of normal mung bean soup (NMBS) and reddened mung bean soup (RMBS). METHODS: Male C57BL/6J mice (six-week-old) were randomly assigned to four groups: control (n

Influence of incubation, diet, and sex on avian uncoupling protein expression and oxidative stress in market age broilers following exposure to acute heat stress.

Genetic selection for rapid growth in broilers has inadvertently resulted in increased susceptibility to heat stress, particularly in male birds. Increased oxidative stress associated with hyperthermia may be reduced by avian uncoupling protein (avUCP), which has been proposed to modulate free radical production. However, the relationship between avUCP expression and current heat stress management strategies is unclear. Embryonic acclimation or thermal manipulation (TM) and dietary fat source are 2 heat stress interventions that may alter avUCP expression and oxidative stress, but the literatu

ZJP-2, a novel wild jujube polysaccharide, enhances longevity, cognitive function, and mitigates oxidative stress via mitochondrial regulation in Caenorhabditis elegans.

Oxidative stress, caused by an imbalance between reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and antioxidant defenses, drives aging and age related functional decline. Natural polysaccharides from medicinal plants are promising interventions against oxidative stress related disorders. This study examined the protective effects of a novel polysaccharide (ZJP-2) isolated from wild jujube (Ziziphus jujuba Mill. var. spinosa) against stress induced physiological deterioration in Caenorhabditis elegans. Using lipopolysaccharide exposure, heat shock, and oxidative stress models, we assessed ZJP-2 effec

Heat exhaustion and heat stroke among active component members of the U.S. Armed Forces, 2019-2023.

The most serious types of heat illnesses, heat exhaustion and heat stroke, are occupational hazards associated with many of the military's training and operational environments. These illnesses can typically be prevented by appropriate situational awareness, risk management strategies, along with effective countermeasures. In 2023, the crude incidence of heat stroke and heat exhaustion were 31.7 and 172.7 cases per 100,000 person-years, respectively. The rates of incident heat stroke declined during the 2019 to 2023 surveillance period, but rates of incident heat exhaustion increased over the

Pathophysiology of bleeding in heat stress: an experimental study in sheep.

Widespread hemorrhagic manifestations commonly occur in patients with severe heat stroke. The pathogenesis of hemostatic disorders in these patients is not fully understood, although it is believed to be multifactorial in origin. The present investigation was designed to study the changes in blood platelets caused by heat stress in an experimental model of five merino sheep. The experiments were performed in two groups of five merino sheep each. In one group the sheep were subjected to a combination of heat (elevated environmental temperature) and exertional stress, and allowed to proceed thro

Ellagic acid mitigates heat-induced testicular detriment in a mouse model.

Heat stress has been shown to have a detrimental impact on testicular activity and spermatogenesis. Ellagic acid is a plant-derived organic compound that has a variety of biological functions. Thus, it is believed that ellagic acid may improve heat-stressed testicular dysfunction. There has been no research on the impact of ellagic acid on heat-stressed testicular dysfunction. The mice were divided into 4 groups. The first group was the normal control group (CN), and the second received heat stress (HS) by submerging the lower body for 15 min in a water bath with a thermostatically controlled

Heat Stress Nephropathy: An Emerging Epidemic of Global Warming.

Climate change has led to global warming since the last century, which has adverse health consequences. Heat stress nephropathy (HSN) is such a disorder that is emerging as an epidemic because of heat exposure, dehydration, and shortage of drinking water. HSN has been suspected to occur in different parts of the world. Many cases of chronic kidney disease of unknown etiology (CKDu) such as Mesoamerican nephropathy and Sri Lankan nephropathy are now being considered as HSN. Influences of agrochemicals (e.g., pesticides), heavy metals (e.g., cadmium, lead, arsenic, and fluoride), and genetic pol
