Dietary fats modulate a wide variety of T cell functions in mice and humans. This study examined the effects of four different dietary fats, predominantly polyunsaturated sunflower oil, margarine, and predominantly saturated butter, clarified butter, on the T cell-mediated, systemic suppression of contact hypersensitivity by ultraviolet radiation in the Skh:HR-1 hairless mouse. Diets containing either 200 g/kg or 50 g/kg butter or clarified butter as the sole fat source protected against systemic photoimmunosuppression, whether the radiation source was unfiltered ultraviolet B (280-320 nm) or

In this report, we present a retrospective assessment of our experiences in maintaining a colony of Mecp2-deficient mice, and present conditions that we have found to foster breeding success of this mutant mouse strain. Data from our colony of mutant Mecp2 mice show that the Mecp2-null allele is under-represented in the weaned litter population, that litters born to heterozygous Mecp2-null females are consistently smaller in number than wild-type, and that fewer litters from heterozygous Mecp2-null females survive to weaning age than wild-type. Our results also reveal that overall litter viabi

BACKGROUND: Angiogenesis is a pathological phenomenon contribute to the development of chronic liver diseases, and anti-angiogenic therapy is an effective strategy to alleviate liver fibrosis. Carthami flos, a medicinal and edible herb, has the effects of improving blood circulation and regulating angiogenesis. However, the anti-angiogenic effect of Carthami flos in liver fibrosis remains unknown.
METHODS: We investigated the protective effect and therapeutic mechanism of Carthami flos extract (CFE) on carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)-induced liver fibrosis in mice. The liver injury and collagen d

The present study was undertaken to examine the possible roles of sodium nitroprusside in protection against oxidative damage due to zinc toxicity in sunflower plants. Physiochemical parameters in sunflower plants exposed to Zn2+ (100, 200 and 300 mg/kg soil) alone or combined with SNP were measured. The results showed that excess of Zn decreased plant growth, seed yield components and photosynthetic pigments content. On the other hand, Zn stress increased the level of non-enzymatic antioxidants (ascorbic acid and reduced glutathione) and enzymatic antioxidants (superoxide dismutase, ascrobate

To date, the existence of the plant inner membrane anion channel (PIMAC) has been shown only in potato mitochondria, but its physiological role remains unclear. In this study, by means of swelling experiments in K(+) and ammonium salts, we characterize a PIMAC-like anion-conducting pathway in mitochondria from durum wheat (DWM), a monocotyledonous species phylogenetically far from potato. DWM were investigated since they possess a very active potassium channel (PmitoK(ATP)), so implying a very active matching anion uniport pathway and, possibly, a coordinated function. As in potato mitochondri

The objectives were to determine if a diet enriched in alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) would influence ovarian function, early embryo survival, conception rates, and pregnancy losses in lactating dairy cows. Beginning 28 d before breeding, Holstein cows (55 +/- 22 d postpartum; mean +/- SD) were assigned to diets supplemented with either rolled flaxseed (FLAX; 56.7% ALA, n = 62) or rolled sunflower seed (SUNF; 0.1% ALA, n = 59) to provide approximately 750 g of oil/d. Diets continued for 32 d after timed artificial insemination (TAI, d 0) following a Presynch/Ovsynch protocol. Barley silage- and ba

The rapidly increasing prevalence of overweight and diabetes mellitus is a serious global threat to healthcare. Nowadays, medicinal plants and natural treatments are becoming more and more popular. Diabetes has historically been treated with plants or plant derived formulations in different cultures, mainly in China, Asia and India. Different mechanisms for the antidiabetic effect of plants have been proposed: increased release of insulin, reduction of intestinal glucose absorption, enhancement of glycogen synthesis. The scientific evidences for most of these plants are still incomplete. The l

Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) and dipeptidyl peptidase-IV (DPP-IV) play critical roles in the development of hypertension and type 2 diabetes, respectively. Inhibiting ACE and DPP-IV activity using peptides has become part of new therapeutic strategies for supporting medicinal treatment of both diseases. In this study, oilseed proteins, including soybean, flaxseed, rapeseed, sunflower and sesame are evaluated for the possibility of generating ACE and DPP-IV inhibitory peptides using different integrated bioinformatic approaches (UniProt knowledgebase, ProtParam, BLAST, BIOPEP, PeptideRan

The aim of this study is to investigate Clostridium botulinum at a Saxony dairy farm with 159 cows and 18 heifers. The animals exhibited clinical symptoms of chronic botulism. To determine the source of the infection, feces, blood, organs, and gastrointestinal fluids of dead or euthanized cows; as well as soil, water, silage and manure were tested for C. botulinum spores and BoNTs using ELISA. BoNT/C and C. botulinum type C were detected in 53% and 3% of tested animals, respectively, while BoNT/D and C. botulinum type D were detected in 18% of the animals. C. botulinum also was detected in org

Changes in food intake, body weight, liver weight, hepatosomatic index and hepatic fatty acid composition were studied in growing male Wistar rats fed a diet containing sunflower oil that had been used repeatedly for frying. During a period of 27 days, the animals were fed semi-synthetic diets containing either 15% used oil with 19.1% polar material (group 2) or 15% unused oils with 5.1% polar material (group 1). Although food intake was similar in both experimental groups, final body weight, body weight gain, food efficiency ratio and protein efficiency ratio were significantly lower in group

Background: RNA therapeutics represent a rapidly advancing field with significant potential for treating viral infections and cancer. This review examines the current landscape of RNA-based strategies, including siRNA, miRNA mimics, and antisense oligonucleotides. For viral infections, the focus is on hepatitis B (HBV) and C (HCV), HIV, and SARS-CoV-2. Approaches include targeting viral transcripts directly (e.g., siRNAs against HBV surface antigen) or host factors critical for viral replication (e.g., anti-miR-122 miravirsen for HCV). The successful development of mRNA vaccines for COVID-19 i

Pectin is an acidic heteropolysaccharide found in the cell walls and the primary and middle lamella of land plants. To be authorized as a food additive, industrial pectins must meet strict guidelines set forth by the Food and Agricultural Organization and must contain at least 65% polygalacturonic acid to achieve the E440 level. Fruit pectin derived from oranges or apples is commonly used in the food industry to gel or thicken foods and to stabilize acid-based milk beverages. It is a naturally occurring component and can be ingested by dietary consumption of fruit and vegetables. Preventing lo

Caffeic acid (CA) is a polyphenol belonging to the phenylpropanoid family, commonly found in plants and vegetables. It was first identified by Hlasiwetz in 1867 as a breakdown product of caffetannic acid. CA is biosynthesized from the amino acids tyrosine or phenylalanine through specific enzyme-catalyzed reactions. Extensive research since its discovery has revealed various health benefits associated with CA, including its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer properties. These effects are attributed to its ability to modulate several pathways, such as inhibiting NFkB, STAT3, and ERK
