UNLABELLED: Helicobacter pylori (Hp) infection influences cell metabolism and apoptosis in the epithelium and lymphocytes of gastric mucosa. It may cause difficulties in the elimination of bacteria and lead to chronic gastritis. THE AIM OF THE STUDY was to find if there is a relationship between periapoptotic markers such as Fas, FasL and Bcl-2 in gastric mucosa in children with chronic gastritis and with Hp infection.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Forty-nine children with chronic abdominal pain were included in the study. They, were divided into three groups: group I without Hp (22) group II with (2

UNLABELLED: The purpose of this study is to evaluate symptomatology, endoscopic and histopathologic changes of Helicobacter pylori infection and gastritis lesions without Helicobacter pylori infection on children diagnosed with celiac disease.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: 15 children under gluten-free diet were selected and, because of the recurrence of the dyspeptic syndrome, an upper digestive endoscopy associated with histopathologic exam was performed. Considering the histopathologic result we made two groups: first group (8 children with celiac disease and Helicobacter pylori infection) and seco

A possible association between Helicobacter pylori infection and eye diseases, including Sjögren syndrome, blepharitis, central serous chorioretinopathy and uveitis, has been proposed. Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness in the world, after cataracts, and the leading cause of irreversible blindness, but many aspects of its pathogenesis remain unknown. H pylori infection may influence the pathophysiology of glaucoma by releasing various proinflammatory and vasoactive substances, as well as by influencing the apoptotic process, parameters that may also exert their own effects in th

INTRODUCTION: Helicobacter pylori (H pylori) infection is a focus of attention nowadays. It has been found to cause gastrointestinal disorders and also extra-intestinal disorders. The aim of this paper is to explore the role of H pylori in urological diseases and to keep urologists up to date in this subject.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Medline and PubMed were searched from 1950 to December 2007 for the following combined terms: Helicobacter pylori together with urology, urological diseases, kidney, kidney cancer, ureter, bladder, bladder cancer, prostate, prostate cancer, benign prostatic hyperpl

Helicobacter pylori has been implicated in the pathogenesis of a number of digestive tract disorders, such as chronic active gastritis, peptic ulceration, gastric cancer, and mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma. Disease outcome is dependent on many factors, including bacterial genotype, host physiology and genetics, and environmental factors such as diet. Researchers continue to explore the complexities of H. pylori infection, seeking to explain why some individuals have asymptomatic infection, whereas others experience clinical disease. The importance of treating H. pylori infection in

The approach to the treatment of Helicobacter pylori infection has changed during the last years. In fact, during the last decade, the success rate of usual eradication regimens, based on a proton pump inhibitor plus clarithromycin associated with amoxicillin or metronidazole, declined from over 90% to about 80%, a critical threshold under which the eradication rate is considered unsatisfactory, according to current guidelines. This finding is mainly due to the raising prevalence of clarithromycin resistance, which is in turn linked to the widespread use of this antibiotic for respiratory trac

Helicobacter pylori colonizes the gastric mucosa in humans and causes chronic gastritis. NF-kappaB has a key role as a mediator in mucosal inflammation. In this study, we examined the expression of NF-kappaB in the antral epithelial cells of H. pylori-infected and H. pylori-uninfected biopsies and examined these processes in relationship with grade and activity of gastritis, density of H. pylori, presence of the intestinal metaplasia, and atrophy. Fifty biopsies (35 H. pylori-positive patients and 15 H. pylori-negative controls) were studied. NF-kappaB immunohistochemical stain was performed.

This paper critically reviews the current literature on extragastric diseases associated with Helicobacter pylori infection, with an emphasis on methodologic issues that complicate interpretation of study findings. This review reveals common study limitations and overall uncertainty that H. pylori infection plays a role in extragastric diseases, although such a role has not been clearly ruled out for specific diseases of relevance. Evidence suggests that anti-H. pylori therapy may lead to improvement of a few extragastric diseases, in particular, idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura, iron defic

Helicobacter pylori infection is implicated in the development of two different gastric cancers: gastric adenocarcinoma and gastric MALT lymphoma. The association with the gastric MALT lymphoma is strong and causal. It is currently the only cancer which can be treated by a simple antibiotic treatment. However, the evolution of an H. pylori infection towards lymphoma is exceptional. Host susceptibility factors and environmental factors predisposing a patient to lymphoma have not yet been determined. The bacterial factors are currently being identified.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Chronic infection with Helicobacter pylori affects approximately half the world and results in malignancy in a small subset of this population. Although the frequency of infection in developed nations is falling with a resultant decline in H. pylori-associated peptic ulcer disease, gastric cancer remains the second major cause of cancer death worldwide, with H. pylori infection being a major attributable factor in the development of gastric cancer. This review provides an update on the pathogenesis of Helicobacter infection, the malignancies associated with infection, and ho

Helicobacter pylori infection is one of the most common gastrointestinal infections worldwide and almost invariably causes chronic gastritis in the infected host. A predominant Th1 profile has been demonstrated in H. pylori-infected mucosa from adults, but no previous study has evaluated in situ cytokine expression in children. We therefore examined expression of proinflammatory, anti-inflammatory, and regulatory cytokines by immunohistochemistry in cryopreserved antral biopsy specimens from 10 H. pylori-infected and 10 uninfected children and correlated expression of cytokines with histology

A treatment strategy for idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) is considered with the aim of cure or management of the bleeding tendency. In 1998, Gasbarrini et al reported a high prevalence of Helicobacter pylori infection in patients with ITP and showed that platelet recovery occurred after eradication therapy in most cases. Since then, many studies were performed to evaluate eradication therapy. This article discusses the incidence of H pylori infection in ITP, characteristic clinical features in H pylori-positive ITP, the effectiveness of eradication on platelet count increase, and the

There are increasing data on the association between Helicobacter pylori infection and idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura and the significant increase in platelet count after bacterial eradication. The aim of this review was to consider the studies so far published on Helicobacter pylori infection and idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura in order to evaluate a possible correlation between these two conditions. A review of the literature showed that 306 out of the 524 patients investigated (54.8%) were positive for Helicobacter pylori infection and that the bacterium was eradicated in 83% of ca

We present the results of our investigations in the epidemiology of H. pylori infection in Peru during the last two decades. The prevalence of Helicobacter pylori infection in Lima is decreasing in people of middle and high socioeconomic status and continues stationary in people of low socioeconomic status. This decrease is similar in Peruvian and Japanese population in this city, and is associated to the decrease of the gastrointestinal diseases related to this bacterium: peptic ulcer and stomach adenocarcinoma. The infection is slightly greater in males and is acquired in early ages of life.

The last twenty years have been the witness of the major revolution in the medical science and practice. Pathogenesis of gastric ulcer disease has probably undergone the most serious change both in the conception and in practice. Though the number of information concerning Helicobacter pylori (Hp) is rising explosively, our understanding of the specific and detailed role of Hp infection in the pathogenesis of various Hp related diseases remains modest.
