Recurrent urticaria, abdominal pain, peripheral eosinophilia, hyperimmunoglobulin E and small bowel abnormalities on roentgenograms prompted evaluation of a 36 year old man for intestinal parasitism. Evidence for helminthiasis as the cause of his symptoms included changing antibody titers to helminth antigens and a dramatic response to therapy. Helminth larvae or eggs were not recovered. Diagnosis of strongyloidiasis, the most likely cause of the illness, is discussed.

African elephants maintain a delicate balance between high intestinal helminth numbers and symptoms of poor health. However, calves and weaners face survival threats from damage caused by helminth infections and infestations during periods of starvation. Using coprological evaluations, we compared helminth infection patterns and selected risk factors in elephants from Tsavo and the Laikipia-Samburu ecosystem (LSE). Eggs and adult worms were identified and classified into genera using morphological and morphometric characteristics. Overall prevalence rates were high at 95.6% and 98.5% for Tsavo

BACKGROUND: Soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections remain a public health problem in Uganda despite biannual national deworming campaigns implemented since the early 2000s. Recent surveys have indicated a heterogeneous STH infection prevalence, suggesting that the current blanket deworming strategy may no longer be cost-effective. This study identified infection predictors, estimated the geographic distribution of STH infection prevalence by species, and calculated deworming needs for school-age children (SAC).
METHODOLOGY: Bayesian geostatistical models were applied to STH survey data (2

Infection with helminth parasites affects more than 1.5 billion people and is concentrated in global areas of extreme poverty, having a significant impact on public health, social life and the economy. Upon entry into the host, helminth parasites often migrate through specific tissues triggering host immunity. The immune response triggered by helminth infections is complex and depends on parasite load, site of infection, acuteness/chronicity of the infection and is species-dependent. In general, susceptibility or resistance to the infection involves the participation of the innate immune respo

The prevalence of intestinal helminthiasis is measured by means of stool examinations. Larvae of S. stercoralis are seen in 9.8% of the specimens, eggs of A. lumbricoides in 51.4%, eggs of T. trichiura in 85.2% and eggs of N. americanus in 64.1%. Strongyloidiasis occurs in foci and affects 16.8% of the inhabitants in one of the studied villages.

The reported incidence of atopic disease in the tropical environment, albeit somewhat controversial, has often been very low. This has been postulated to be due to an inhibitory influence of intestinal helminthiasis, although the predominantly rural nature of the populations studied might also be an important factor to consider. We evaluated two tropical groups in Venezuela that were basically comparable, both being highly parasitized but one of which was urban and the other rural. The apparent incidence of allergic conditions in the urban group was, in fact, comparable to that in temperate co…

Even with a national control programme in place, intestinal schistosomiasis continues to be a major public health problem in school-aged children and other community members in Uganda. This is especially the case in the environments around the Great Lakes, where disease transmission is high, such as Lake Victoria. Moreover, in the most remote areas, some schools might periodically miss large-scale drug administrations owing to inaccessibility. To provide contemporary monitoring and surveillance data, 27 schools along the lakeshore were surveyed with a rapid assessment protocol to determine bot

Schistosomiasis and soil transmitted helminthiases (STH) are still prevalent in Rwanda. We aimed to identify factors associated with the persistence of infection in selected sentinel sites that will be used to monitor the progress towards elimination. Infection prevalence and intensity were assessed using the Kato Katz (KK) and the Circulating Cathodic Antigen (CCA for schistosomiasis). Scooping and shedding were used to determine snail distribution and infectivity. Risk factors were collected through a structured questionnaire. Overall, the prevalence of STH and schistosomiasis on KK were 12.

BACKGROUND: Schistosomiasis (SCH) and soil-transmitted helminthiasis (STH) are endemic in Chad, particularly in areas with inadequate water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) infrastructure. This study aimed to assess the prevalence and spatial distribution of SCH and STH among school-age children (SAC) to optimize mass drug administration (MDA) strategies.
METHODS: A cross-sectional parasitological survey was conducted in 308 schools in 247 subdistricts across 25 health districts of seven provinces in Chad. Kato-Katz and urine filtration techniques were used to examine 15 828 SAC for Schistosoma…

BACKGROUND: Control of soil-transmitted helminthiasis and schistosomiasis relies heavily on regular preventive chemotherapy. Monitoring drug efficacy is crucial to provide early warning of treatment failures. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends a survey design in which only egg-positive individuals are retested after treatment. Although this practice makes more efficient use of resources, it may lead to biased drug efficacy estimates.
METHODS: We performed a simulation study to assess the potential for bias when evaluating drug efficacy using the World Health Organization-recommend…

This study aimed to assess the current situation of STH in pregnant women, explore factors associated with STH and evaluate the effects of its treatment. A cohort study was conducted in four southernmost provinces. All pregnant women who presented at their first prenatal care visit at participating hospitals were interviewed by trained health care providers and their stool specimens were examined for Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichuris trichiura and hookworm eggs. Women with STH were treated with 400 mg of albendazole after 14 weeks of gestation and treatment outcomes were evaluated three weeks af

The situation with helminthiases has been studied on the right tributaries of the Dnieper, the upper reaches of Kremenchug storage pond and in the storage ponds of the South Bug basin. The existence of genuine opisthorchiasis foci in Kremenchug storage pond is at present impossible due to the absence of Codiella mollusks. Fish of the carp family is infected in the right tributaries of the Dnieper. No diphyllobothriasis foci have been identified in the upper reaches of Kremenchug storage pond. Opisthorchiasis and diphyllobothriasis foci have not been identified in storage ponds of the South Bug
