Pulmonary hypoplasia (PH) is a leading contributor to the lethality of congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH). Studies now suggest that PH arises prior to visceral herniation. Growth factors (GF) are pivotal to this embryonic lung growth. With striking in-vitro effects on lung morphogenesis, GF are under investigation as therapies for PH. BACKGROUND: Ligneous conjunctivitis is a rare acute or subacute membranous conjunctivitis of unknown etiology for which no generally accepted form of treatment is available.
METHODS: Between 1972 and 1993, 17 patients with ligneous conjunctivitis were treated with excision biopsy, meticulous hemostasis, and immediate, intensive topical treatment with heparin, steroids, and, in 12 patients, alpha-chymotrypsin until all signs of conjunctival inflammation had subsided.

Dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) is an effective treatment of symptomatic patients with detrusor mastocytosis but it is associated with frequent relapses. A group of patients (N = 25) followed for twelve months showed a relapse rate of 59 percent. Our experience with a combination of DMSO and heparin has suggested that the relapse rate may be lower. Heparin is a glycosaminoglycan that may afford protection to the urothelium and may reduce the relapse rate. Multiple vertebral compression fractures occurred in the 33rd week of pregnancy in a breast-feeding mother receiving heparin (20,000-25,000 units/die over 5 months), for deep vein thrombosis. Osteoporosis under heparin therapy is a rare complication and this diagnosis was not made despite obvious clinical signs. It follows from this observation, that heparin therapy should be substituted by oral anticoagulant therapy and discontinued directly after delivery.

Histamine and heparin, both free and cellular, were assayed in the nasal mucosa of 11 atopic and 15 nonatopic patients undergoing turbinectomy for chronic rhinitis.
