Narcolepsy is a sleep disorder that has been shown to be tightly associated with HLA DR15 (DR2). In this study, 58 non-DR15 patients with narcolepsy-cataplexy were typed at the HLA DRB1, DQA1 and DQB1 loci. Subjects included both sporadic cases and narcoleptic probands from multiplex families. No association has been found between HLA-A,B, or HLA-C antigens and Bell's palsy. We performed HLA-DR typing on 30 patients with Bell's palsy. Our results suggest possible associations with HLA-DR2, -DR4, -DRW6, and -DRW7 antigens. A significant association between HLA-DR and Bell's palsy may indicate a genetic basis for susceptibility to this disease.

Matching for the HLA-A and -B antigens was found to have a significant influence on the outcome of 459 cadaveric first transplants, with a difference in graft survival of 21% at one year between best and worst matched grafts (p = 0.003). Matching for the HLA-DR antigens seemed to have an even greater influence. A case of familial pemphigus vulgaris is described in an uncle and his niece who developed the disease 18 years apart. The man died from pemphigus in 1964. The diagnosis was confirmed histopathologically in both cases, but immunofluorescent microscopic studies were performed only in the woman because the technique was not available in 1964. HLA typing in the woman and her daughter and sister showed A 26, BW 38 and DRW 4 in all of them. Clinical disease did not develop in the other family members.

Fifty-five Caucasoid patients with polymyalgia rheumatica or giant cell arteritis were typed for HLA, A, B, C and DR locus antigens. In the total patient group, DR4 had a significantly increased frequency. The prevalence of CW3 and CW6 was also significantly increased, the rise of CW3 possibly being attributable to its well-documented linkage disequilibrium with DR4. The rise in CW6 cannot be attributed to its known linkage disequilibrium with DR7.

Several clinical and epidemiological studies have shown the role of genetic factors in the pathogenesis of primary open angle glaucoma (POAG). In this study, 30 patients affected by this disease were tissue-typed for HLA Class I and Class II antigens. The results pointed up an increased incidence of some antigens and, particularly, a statistically significant association with DQ1 and DR11 alleles.
