Prevalence and impact of complications on hospitalization outcomes following surgical repair for craniosynostosis.

PURPOSE: The objective of the present study was to examine the association between different types of complications and hospitalization outcomes in patients having surgical repair for craniosynostosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The Nationwide Inpatient Sample for 2004 through 2010 was used. All patients up to 3 years old who underwent surgical repair for craniosynostosis were selected for analysis. The primary independent variable was occurrence of different types of complications. The outcomes of interest included hospital charges and length of hospital stay. RESULTS: During the study period, …

The cost of a pediatric neurocritical care program for traumatic brain injury: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Inpatient care for children with severe traumatic brain injury (sTBI) is expensive, with inpatient charges averaging over $70,000 per case (Hospital Inpatient, Children Only, National Statistics. Diagnoses- clinical classification software (CCS) principal diagnosis category 85 coma, stupor, and brain damage, and 233 intracranial injury. Screening for inhalational anthrax due to bioterrorism: evaluating proposed screening protocols.

Eleven known cases of bioterrorism-related inhalational anthrax (IA) were treated in the United States during 2001. We retrospectively compared 2 methods that have been proposed to screen for IA. The 2 screening protocols for IA were applied to the emergency department charts of patients who presented with possible signs or symptoms of IA at Inova Fairfax Hospital (Falls Church, Virginia) from 20 October 2001 through 3 November 2001. The Mayer criteria would have screened 4 patients (0.4%; 95% CI, 0.1%-0.9%) and generated charges of 1900 dollars. If 29 patients (2.6%; 95% CI, 1.7%-3.7%) with >

A multicenter randomized comparison of laparoscopically assisted vaginal hysterectomy and abdominal hysterectomy in abdominal hysterectomy candidates.

OBJECTIVE: To compare intraoperative and postoperative outcomes between laparoscopically assisted vaginal hysterectomy and abdominal hystere … hysterectomy (4.1 days and 38.0 days, respectively). There were no significant differences in mean hospital charges between the study groups (laparoscopic $8161, abdominal $6974). CONCLUSION: Except for operating time, there are no differences between laparoscopically assisted vaginal hysterectomy and abdominal hysterectomy regarding intraoperative characteristi …

Trends in Hospitalizations for Sickle Cell Disease Related-Complications in USA 2004 - 2012.

BACKGROUND: Sickle cell disease (SCD) affects 100,000 patients in the USA. However, no recent data was available for annual national trends in hospitalization rates, in-hospital mortality, hospital length of stay (LOS) and costs of SCD admissions due to its complications. METHODS: This study was conducted to study the trends of hospitalization rates, in-hospital mortality, LOS and hospital charges due to SCD-related complications in African American (AA) patients from 2004 to 2012 in the USA. Complications included acute chest syndrome, splenic sequestration, bacterial pneumonia, sepsis, stro…

Early primary repair of tetralogy of Fallot does not lead to increased postoperative resource utilization.

BACKGROUND: Although early primary repair of tetralogy of Fallot has gained wider acceptance, there is some speculation that repair at a younger age may be associated with increased morbidity and resource utilization. METHODS: A retrospective review of all consecutive patients undergoing tetralogy of Fallot repair between September 2004 and December 2011 was performed. Primary end points were hospital charges, and surrogates of postoperative hospital resource utilization, including ventilation time, intensive care unit (ICU) stay, and hospital stay. The secondary end point was operative death…

Recent Trends in Hypoparathyroidism-Related Inpatient and Emergency Department Admissions and Costs in the United States.

Hypoparathyroidism (HypoPT) is a rare disease associated with high morbidity. Its economic impact is not well understood. This retrospective, cross-sectional study used data from the United States-based National Inpatient Sample and the Nationwide Emergency Department Sample from 2010 to 2018 to quantify overall trends in number, cost, charges, and length of stay (LOS) for inpatient hospitalizations and number and charges for emergency department (ED) visits for HypoPT-related and for non-HypoPT-related causes. Additionally, the study estimated the marginal effect of HypoPT on total inpatient

Relationship between hospital volume and outcomes of esophageal variceal bleeding in the United States.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Esophageal variceal bleeding has a high mortality rate and requires complex management. High provider volume has been ass … riceal bleeding. The effects of hospital volume on in-hospital mortality, length of stay (LOS), and hospital charges were evaluated by using logistic regression models with adjustment for demographic and clinical factors. Hospital volume was classified on the basis of the average annual number of esophageal variceal bleeding admissions during the study interval (l …

Lumbar spine arthrodesis. A comparison of hospital costs between 1986 and 1993.

The purpose of this project was to evaluate the hospital costs of one- and two-level spinal arthrodesis and to determine areas where costs m … nters showed such a drastic increase. Increasingly sophisticated technology has dramatically raised hospital charges. Strategies to reduce the overall cost of spinal surgery should concentrate on controlling the cost of spinal implants.

Direct medical charges in a population-based systemic lupus erythematosus cohort.

AIM: This study aimed to obtain estimates for the direct medical charges associated with hospitalizations and emergency department visits of validated SLE cases in a diverse Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) population. METHODS: The Georgians Organized Against Lupus (GOAL) cohort is a population-based cohort of adult SLE patients from metropolitan Atlanta, GA USA, an area having a diverse SLE population. The GOAL cohort aims to study the impact of social determinants of health (SDoH) on outcomes relevant to patients, healthcare providers, and policymakers. For this study, survey data collect

Economic burden of not recognizing panic disorder in the emergency department.

The objective of this cohort study was to examine the diagnostic patterns and resource utilization of patients presenting to the Emergency Department with chest pain of unknown origin who may be experiencing a panic attack. Patients were excluded if they had coronary artery disease. In the 155 patients meeting study criteria, unspecified chest pain (78%) was the most common diagnostic code assigned. Total charges for the index hospitalization were $1,263,391 (median/visit = $7340). During the 1-year follow-up, 41% of patients had at least one repeat hospital visit and generated $1.6 million in

Cholecystectomies performed in children by pediatric surgeons compared to general surgeons in North Carolina are associated with higher institutional charges.

INTRODUCTION: The delivery of pediatric surgical care for gallbladder (GB) and biliary disease involves both General Surgeons (GS) and Pediatric Surgeons (PS). There is a lack of data describing how surgeon specialty impacts practice patterns and healthcare charges. METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of the North Carolina Inpatient Hospital Discharge Database (2013-2017) on pediatric patients (≤18 years) undergoing surgery for biliary pathology. We performed multivariate linear regression comparing surgeons with surgical charge. RESULTS: 12,531 patients had GB or biliary pathology
