Parasite transmission through suspension feeding.

Suspension-feeding bivalve molluscs are confronted with a wide range of materials in the benthic marine environment. These materials include various sized plankton and the organic material derived from it, macroalgae, detritus and a diversity of microbial parasites that have adapted life stages to survive in the water column. For bivalve parasites to infect hosts though, they must first survive and remain infectious in the water column to make initial contact with hosts, and once in contact, enter and overcome elaborate pathways for particle sorting and selection. Even past these defenses, biv

Coendangered hard-ticks: threatened or threatening?

The overwhelming majority of animal conservation projects are focused on vertebrates, despite most of the species on Earth being invertebrates. Estimates state that about half of all named species of invertebrates are parasitic in at least one stage of their development. The dilemma of viewing parasites as biodiversity or pest has been discussed by several authors. However, ticks were omitted. The latest taxonomic synopses of non-fossil Ixodidae consider valid 700 species. Though, how many of them are still extant is almost impossible to tell, as many of them are known only from type specimens

Interactions among bacterial strains and fluke genotypes shape virulence of co-infection.

Most studies of virulence of infection focus on pairwise host-parasite interactions. However, hosts are almost universally co-infected by several parasite strains and/or genotypes of the same or different species. While theory predicts that co-infection favours more virulent parasite genotypes through intensified competition for host resources, knowledge of the effects of genotype by genotype (G × G) interactions between unrelated parasite species on virulence of co-infection is limited. Here, we tested such a relationship by challenging rainbow trout with replicated bacterial strains and fluk…

Host-mediated filtering and interspecific associations structure strongyle parasite communities in Sable Island horses.

Mixed-species parasite infections are common in wildlife, yet the ecological processes that structure these communities remain poorly understood. We hypothesized that host-mediated and extrinsic environmental filtering, alongside biotic interactions, act concurrently to shape parasite community composition, and that these structuring patterns would depend on parasite traits or evolutionary history. We applied nemabiome DNA metabarcoding to 3147 faecal samples from 916 feral horses with no history of anthelmintic treatment, collected over 10 years as part of a long-term individual-based study o

Co-occurrence patterns of internal parasitic nematodes and coccidia in wild bighorn sheep depend on host geography and environment.

Heterogeneity of internal parasite communities amongst host animals is shaped by processes at multiple scales, including landscape distribution of parasites, individual host suitability, and parasite interactions within a host. As a result, pathogen co-occurrence patterns vary across space and time and among host populations. Often the challenges of wildlife sampling limit understanding of the drivers of pathogen community heterogeneity in host animals. In this study, we explore patterns and drivers of parasite community heterogeneity amongst wild bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis) hosts over tim

Host cell actin remodeling in response to Cryptosporidium.

Cryptosporidium exhibits a complex strategy to invade and establish productive infection sites, involving complimentary parasite and host cell processes. While the work regarding host cell actin remodeling has greatly enhanced our understanding of the molecular pathways involved in the parasite induced actin reorganization, the specific function of host cell actin remodeling is still equivocal. We contend that host cell actin polymerization contributes to the development of productive C. parvum infection sites by generating membrane protrusion events, which may assist in the retention of the p

Phenotypic plasticity of 'off-host' parasite stages in response to heatwaves in the Daphnia-Pasteuria system.

Heatwaves challenge our understanding of how environmental stressors reshape host-parasite interactions, particularly during the critical "off-host" stages of endoparasites. These stages, often dismissed as inert and unaffected by environmental changes, remain a black box in ecological research despite their key role in parasites' life cycle. Here, we examined how heatwaves affect the infectivity and progression of infection of Pasteuria ramosa, a bacterial parasite of the planktonic crustacean Daphnia magna. In order to measure the respective influences of the bacterial genotype and the heatw…

Morphology and Phylogeny of Thylacoplethus squillae (Rhizocephala: Thompsoniidae), a Parasite of the Mantis Shrimp Harpiosquilla harpax.

Parasitic barnacles (Cirripedia: Rhizocephala) are among the most highly specialized parasitic groups, exhibiting profound morphological modifications and a remarkable capacity to manipulate crustacean hosts. Thompsoniidae, a family of highly derived rhizocephalans parasitizing a wide range of hosts (stomatopods, anomurans, and brachyurans), remains poorly studied. Here, we reconstructed the phylogeny of Thompsoniidae and investigated the morphology of Thylacoplethus squillae, a parasite of the mantis shrimp Harpiosquilla harpax, with particular emphasis on the interna. Our phylogenetic analys

Trematode genetic patterns at host individual and population scales provide insights about infection mechanisms.

Multiple parasites can infect a single host, creating a dynamic environment where each parasite must compete over host resources. Such interactions can cause greater harm to the host than single infections and can also have negative consequences for the parasites themselves. In their first intermediate hosts, trematodes multiply asexually and can eventually reach up to 20% of the host's biomass. In most species, it is unclear whether this biomass results from a single infection or co-infection by 2 or more infective stages (miracidia), the latter being more likely a priori in areas where preva

Emerging parasite zoonoses: the role of host-parasite relationship.

Human-parasite relationships have played an essential role in the emergence or re-emergence of some parasitic diseases. These interactions are due to numerous causes. Some are linked to humans (immunodeficiencies due to AIDS among other causes, treatments, nosocomial contaminations, genetic predisposition), others concern the parasite (particular genotypes having modified their parasitic specificity). Several of these causes were predominant in the emergence of parasitoses such as cryptosporidiasis, microsporidioses or, to a certain point, pneumocystosis, the transmission of which has become z

Analysis of Predicted Host-Parasite Interactomes Reveals Commonalities and Specificities Related to Parasitic Lifestyle and Tissues Tropism.

The study of molecular host-parasite interactions is essential to understand parasitic infection and adaptation within the host system. As well, prevention and treatment of infectious diseases require a clear understanding of the molecular crosstalk between parasites and their hosts. Yet, large-scale experimental identification of host-parasite molecular interactions remains challenging, and the use of computational predictions becomes then necessary. Here, we propose a computational integrative approach to predict host-parasite protein-protein interaction (PPI) networks resulting from the hum…

Diseases of Gastropoda.

Gastropods (class Gastropoda) form the largest of the classes in the phylum Mollusca and inhabit terrestrial, fresh water and marine environments. A large number of these species are of major conservation importance and are an essential component of ecosystems. Gastropods may be deemed as pests, having a negative impact in horticulture and agriculture, whereas others may be used as a food source for human consumption and therefore are beneficial. Gastropods are susceptible to primary diseases and also act as intermediate hosts for diseases which affect other animals, including humans. The dise

Parasitic nematodes simultaneously suppress and benefit from coccidian coinfection in their natural mouse host.

Within-host interactions among coinfecting parasites are common and have important consequences for host health and disease dynamics. However, these within-host interactions have traditionally been studied in laboratory mouse models, which often exclude important variation and use unnatural host-parasite combinations. Conversely, the few wild studies of within-host interactions often lack knowledge of parasite exposure and infection history. Here we exposed laboratory-reared wood mice (Apodemus sylvaticus) that were derived from wild-caught animals to two naturally-occurring parasites (nematod

Molecular basis of Cryptosporidium-host cell interactions: recent advances and future prospects.

Host-parasite interactions mediating attachment of Cryptosporidium spp. to host cells and invasion of the cell membrane are complex processes that involve multiple parasite and host molecules. Knowledge of the molecular basis of these processes is crucial for understanding the pathogenic mechanisms underlying infection and for designing strategies to combat cryptosporidiosis. Recent progress in this field has been greatly facilitated by the completion of the genome sequences of Cryptosporidium parvum and Cryptosporidium hominis and by success in heterologous expression of Cryptosporidium genes…

Shifting waters: how habitat alteration affects host-parasite dynamics in freshwater ecosystems.

Human activities have profoundly altered freshwater ecosystems, reshaping host-parasite dynamics with sometimes far-reaching ecological and public health consequences. Based on the examples of stream degradation and restoration, dam construction, agriculture, and urbanization, this review synthesizes how habitat alteration influences parasite communities in freshwater systems. Restoration efforts, such as those in Germany's Emscher River, demonstrate partial recovery of parasite diversity, though persistent stressors often favour generalist taxa with simple life cycles, reflecting incomplete e

Host exposure to a common pollutant can influence diversity-disease relationships.

Hosts and parasites are embedded in communities where species richness and composition can influence disease outcomes (diversity-disease relationships). The direction and magnitude of diversity-disease relationships are influenced by variation in competence (ability to support and transmit infections) of hosts in a community. However, host susceptibility to parasites, which mediates host competence, is not static and is influenced by environmental factors, including pollutants. Despite the role that pollutants can play in augmenting host susceptibility, how pollutants influence diversity-disea

Elemental content of a host-parasite relationship in the threespine stickleback.

Parasite infections are ubiquitous and their effects on hosts could play a role in ecosystem processes. Ecological stoichiometry provides a framework to study linkages between consumers and their resource, such as parasites and their host, and ecosystem process; however, the stoichiometric traits of host-parasite associations are rarely quantified. Specifically, it is unclear whether parasites' elemental ratios closely resemble those of their host or if infection is related to host stoichiometry, especially in vertebrate hosts. To answer such questions, we measured the elemental content (%C, %

Progresses and challenges in Strongyloides spp. proteomics.

The availability of high-quality data of helminth genomes provided over the past two decades has supported and accelerated large-scale 'omics studies and, consequently, the achievement of a more in-depth molecular characterization of a number of pathogens. This has also involved Strongyloides spp. and since their genome was made available transcriptomics has been rather frequently applied to investigate gene expression regulation across their life cycle. Strongyloides proteomics characterization has instead been somehow neglected, with only a few reports performing high-throughput or targeted
