Reductions in size and left-right asymmetry of teeth in human oligodontia.

Tooth size and left-right asymmetry of tooth dimensions in oligodontia were compared with those of a control group. Both early and late developing teeth were severely affected, and almost all teeth had significant reductions, compared to the control group, in mesiodistal and labiolingual dimensions. Left-right asymmetry of tooth dimensions was also found, but for the mesiodistal dimensions these were not significantly different from the control group. The occurrence of reductions in tooth size and left-right asymmetries suggests that oligodontia is not just an isolated phenomenon. The left-rig

Applying an Indigenous and gender-based lens to the exploration of public health and human rights implications of COVID-19 in Canadian correctional facilities.

Due to overcrowding and subsequent unavoidable close contact, poor ventilation, and decreased hygiene standards and healthcare services as compared with in the community setting, the prison environment is highly conducive to the transmission of infections, including COVID-19. Physical distancing measures may be difficult to implement without introducing interventions that may violate human rights. Given that Indigenous women represent over 41% of federally incarcerated women, this is a cause for concern. Indigenous women are also more likely to have higher rates of numerous chronic conditions,…

A legal-realist assessment of human rights, right to health and standards of healthcare in the Malawian prison system during COVID-19 state disaster measures.

PURPOSE: The first case of COVID-19 in the Malawi prison system was reported in July 2020. Human rights organisations raised concerns about the possibility of significant COVID-19 outbreaks and deaths in the prison system, because of the poor infrastructure, lack of healthcare and adequate COVID-19 mitigation measures, existing co-morbidities (tuberculosis, HIV and hepatitis C), malnutrition and poor health of many prisoners. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: The authors conducted a legal-realist assessment of the Malawian prison system response to COVID-19 during state disaster measures, with a s…

Human rights versus societal norms: a mixed methods study among healthcare providers on social stigma related to adolescent abortion and contraceptive use in Kisumu, Kenya.

INTRODUCTION: Adolescent pregnancy represents a serious public health issue in sub-Saharan Africa, and stigmatising attitudes are contributi … and contraception is common among PAC providers. Their work is characterised by a conflict between human rights and societal norms, thus highlighting the need for interventions targeting PAC providers to reduce stigma and misconceptions related to abortion and contraception among adolescent women.

The perception of quality of care and respect of human rights in mental healthcare facilities among users during and after the pandemic in Sardinia, Italy.

BACKGROUND: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has strongly challenged health systems, but Italian community mental health services, rooted in the Basaglia reform and the World Health Organization (WHO) QualityRights framework, may have preserved a high perception of care quality and respect for human rights. This study compared users' perceptions of quality of care, human rights, and resource adequacy in public mental healthcare facilities during and after the pandemic in Sardinia, Italy. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted in 2025 among users attending three commun…

Stalled Progress in HIV Prevention for Trans Women in San Francisco: A Call for Upstream Solutions and Renewed Support for Public Health and Human Rights.

We compare indicators of HIV prevention and care in two rounds of National HIV Behavioral Surveillance for transgender women (NHBS-Trans) in San Francisco. NHBS-Trans recruited 201 trans women in 2019/20 and 339 in 2023/2024 through peer referral methods. The proportion of trans women on ART significantly improved from 90% to 98% ([Formula: see text]=6.33, p = 0.018) over this time period. Additionally, methamphetamine use decreased overall from 32% to 22% (χ2 = 7.08, p = 0.008). Among trans women living with HIV, the proportion reporting injection drug use also decreased from 22% to 11% (χ2 =

Migrants' human rights and health protection during the COVID-19 pandemic in the Mediterranean Sea: what we have learnt from direct inspections in two Italian hotspots.

This study aims to assess the situation of Italian hotspots for migrant reception during the COVID-19 pandemic, and specifically analyzing the situation of two hotspots located in the Sicily Region (Pozzallo harbor and Lampedusa Island), to identify critical issues. At the same time, we hypothesize solutions to guarantee the respect of human rights and suggest an operational protocol to be applied in similar situations, considering that the migration phenomenon is increasing and involving new geographical areas. Based on data obtained through the site inspections, the facilities of Pozzallo an…

A common gene signature of the right ventricle in failing rat and human hearts.

The molecular mechanisms of progressive right heart failure are incompletely understood. In this study, we systematically examined transcriptomic changes occurring over months in isolated cardiomyocytes or whole heart tissues from failing right and left ventricles in rat models of pulmonary artery banding (PAB) or aortic banding (AOB). Detailed bioinformatics analyses resulted in the identification of gene signature, protein and transcription factor networks specific to ventricles and compensated or decompensated disease states. Proteomic and RNA-FISH analyses confirmed PAB-mediated regulation

Analysis of DCM associated protein alterations of human right and left ventricles.

Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is characterized by ventricular chamber enlargement and impaired myocardial function. Endomyocardial biopsies (EMB) enable immunohistochemical and molecular characterization of this disease. However, knowledge about specific molecular patterns and their relation to cardiac function in both ventricles is rare. Therefore, we performed a mass spectrometric analysis of 28 paired EMBs of left (LV) and right ventricles (RV) of patients with DCM or suspected myocarditis allowing quantitative profiling of 743 proteins. We analysed associations between protein abundance of

Quantitative analysis of collagens and fibronectin expression in human right ventricular hypertrophy.

One of the main features in human tetralogy of Fallot (TF) is right ventricular hypertrophy (RVH) due to pressure (sub-pulmonary stenosis) and volume overload (ventricular septal defect). Currently, primary correction at a young age is the treatment of choice. To unravel the role of extracellular matrix in RVH, we examined myocardial expression of collagens and fibronectin in TF patients with primary correction (TF1, age 0.7 +/- 0.2 yr.), secondary surgery (TF2, age 36.9 +/- 4.6 yr), and in age-matched control patients. Sirius red staining quantified by video imaging showed significantly incre

CIROZ is dispensable in ancestral vertebrates but essential for left-right patterning in humans.

Four genes-DAND5, PKD1L1, MMP21, and CIROP-form a genetic module that has specifically evolved in vertebrate species that harbor motile cilia in their left-right organizer (LRO). We find here that CIROZ (previously known as C1orf127) is also specifically expressed in the LRO of mice, frogs, and fish, where it encodes a protein with a signal peptide followed by 3 zona pellucida N domains, consistent with extracellular localization. We report 16 individuals from 10 families with bi-allelic CIROZ inactivation variants, which cause heterotaxy with congenital heart defects. While the knockout of Ci

Electrophysiologic characteristics of paroxysmal and chronic atrial fibrillation in human right atrium.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to analyze the electrophysiologic characteristics of paroxysmal (PAF) and chronic (CAF) atrial fibrillation (AF) in the human right atrium (RA). BACKGROUND: Differences that exist between PAF and CAF and the mechanisms of self-sustenance of these arrhythmias are incompletely understood. METHODS: A total of 53 patients with PAF (25 patients, mean age 59 +/- 6.1 years, 3 women) and CAF (28 patients, mean age 59 +/- 13 years, 7 women) underwent multisite mapping of the RA during ongoing AF using a 64-electrode basket catheter. Observations on the biphasic nature of digitalis electrophysiological actions in the human right atrium.

Cardiac electrophysiological effects of a digitalis glycoside have been investigated by right atrial intracardiac stimulation and recording in 12 patients with paroxysmal supraventricular tachyarrhythmias. Measurements were made of atrial effective refractoriness by pacing together with programmed premature extrastimulation. Simultaneous recordings of atrial action potential duration from a site close to the sinoatrial node and from a more distal atrial site were made using an endocardial contact-injury potential technique. All subjects received methyldigoxin 10.0 micrograms X kg-1 intravenous

Differences in and associations between belief in just deserts and human rights restrictions over a 3-year period in five countries during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Discrimination, which arose during the coronavirus disease 2019 outbreak, is a global public health issue. This study aimed to provide fundamental knowledge in proposing control measures to mitigate discrimination. We focused on two psychological variables: belief in just deserts (BJD, i.e., the belief that the infected individual deserves to be infected), a psychological factor that potentially promotes discrimination and prejudice, and human rights restrictions (HRR; i.e., the degree of individuals' agreement with government restrictions on citizens' behavior during emergencies). Differences…
