Urban streams are increasingly regulated by the interaction of climate-driven thermal stress and episodic infrastructure disturbances, yet their combined influence on dissolved oxygen (DO) dynamics remains insufficiently resolved across temporal scales. This study quantified the combined effects of temperature, hydrology, and combined sewer overflow (CSO) activity on DO across four urban watersheds in Philadelphia, USA, using 12 years of high-frequency monitoring integrated with precipitation, streamflow, and modeled CSO data. A multi-scale framework combining event-stratified comparisons, dis…

Coastal upland forests are exposed to intensifying precipitation regimes and sea level rise, increasing tree mortality and transforming thes … ecosystem-scale flooding event in TEMPEST. Following a 9-hour experimental treatment, the system's hydrology was temporarily and significantly impacted, but there were subtle effects on biogeochemical and vegetation components of the ecosystem. This suggests that this temperate deciduous forest was resistant to a single novel flooding event, even if the wa …

The hydrologic benefits of catchment-scale implementation of stormwater control measures (SCMs) in mitigating the adverse effects of urbanization are well established. Nevertheless, recent studies indicate that the Unified Stormwater Sizing Criteria (USSC) regulations, mandating the combined use of distributed and storage stormwater controls, do not protect channel stability, despite their effectiveness in reducing runoff from impervious surfaces. The USSC are the basis of SCM design in 11 U.S. states and the District of Columbia. This study employed a calibrated, sequential modeling approach,

Mercury (Hg) contamination is a serious environmental problem due to its toxicity and bioaccumulation in aquatic communities. In the Amazon, hydrological fluctuations influence plankton structure and abundance, while gold mining constitutes an important anthropogenic source of Hg, releasing the metal into the water column and facilitating its incorporation by biota. In this study, we assessed total Hg (THg), methylmercury (MeHg), and the MeHg:THg ratio in the planktonic community of the upper Madeira River basin (Brazil) over a 10-year period. Mean concentrations of THg, MeHg, and MeHg:THg wer

The streambed point velocity probe (SBPVP) measures in situ groundwater velocities at the groundwater-surface water interface without reliance on hydraulic conductivity, porosity, or hydraulic gradient information. The tool operates on the basis of a mini-tracer test that occurs on the probe surface. The SBPVP was used in a meander of the Grindsted Å (stream), Denmark, to determine the distribution of flow through the streambed. These data were used to calculate the contaminant mass discharge of chlorinated ethenes into the stream. SBPVP data were compared with velocities estimated from hydrau

Diffusion is regarded as the dominant transport mechanism into and out of low permeable subsurface lenses and layers in the subsurface. But, some reports of mass storage in such zones are higher than what might be attributable to diffusion, based on estimated diffusion coefficients. Despite the importance of diffusion to efforts to estimate the quantity of residual contamination in the subsurface, relatively few studies present measured diffusion coefficients of organic solutes in saturated low permeability soils. This study reports the diffusion coefficients of a trichloroethylene (TCE), and

Deep fracture zones in Finnish crystalline bedrock have been isolated for long, the oldest fluids being tens of millions of years old. To accurately measure the native microbial diversity in fracture-zone fluids, water samples were obtained by isolating the borehole fraction spanning a deep subsurface aquifer fracture zone with inflatable packers (500 and 967 m) or by pumping fluids directly from the fracture zone. Sampling frequency was examined to establish the time required for the space between packers to be flushed and replaced by indigenous fracture fluids. Chemical parameters of the flu

Headwaters-that is headwater streams and the watersheds they drain-strongly influence water quality, ecosystem services, and hydrologic connectivity, yet remain poorly mapped, monitored, and understood at large spatial scales. Using available spatial data to classify headwater "types" could therefore enhance the utility of sparse monitoring data to advance research and watershed planning-and help update literature-based perceptual models of headwaters as steep, forested, and minimally disturbed watersheds. Here, we analyze headwaters across the contiguous United States to quantify how their at

The establishment of mass spectrometry in New Zealand coincided with the transition of wartime nuclear physics into civilian research applications in geochemistry, hydrology, geothermal studies, mineral resources and environmental science. George Page (1920-1967) played a central but often overlooked role in New Zealand. Drawing on wartime and post-World War II experience in isotope separation and instrumentation, Page was directly responsible for the construction of New Zealand's first operational mass spectrometer at the Dominion Physical Laboratory. Working with Athol Rafter and Gordon Ferg…

Investigations were conducted in the context of the landscape-biocenological concept. The formation of water-storage basins in the valley of the Angara River was shown to give rise to the transformation of the morphological structure and hydrological regimen of a landscape, which determined a change in some environmental conditions and factors of a combination of foci and the emergence of others. The morphological structure and hydrological regimen of a landscape, the species composition of ecosystems, the populations of hosts, and their biocenotic relations were transformed due to the direct

Temperate forests are key terrestrial carbon sinks, yet their capacity to sequester carbon is often limited by nitrogen (N), a nutrient whose availability is declining in many ecosystems. Among factors contributing to declining N availability, climate-driven changes in soil hydrology could force N loss via the emission of both nitric oxide (NO) and nitrous oxide (N2O); however, forecasting these losses is challenging because they are regulated by soil moisture, a factor that regulates microbial activity and substrate availability but varies significantly across space and time. Here, we ask: ho…

Climate change is expected to alter the hydrology and vascular plant communities in peatland ecosystems. These changes may have as yet unexplored impacts on peat mercury (Hg) concentrations and net methylmercury (MeHg) production. In this study, peat was collected from PEATcosm, an outdoor, controlled mesocosm experiment where peatland water table regimes and vascular plant functional groups were manipulated over several years to simulate potential climate change effects. Potential Hg(II) methylation and MeHg demethylation rate constants were assessed using enriched stable isotope incubations …

In January 1992, there was a major pollutant event for the River Carnon and downstream with its confluence to the River Fal and the Fal estuary in the west Cornwall. This incident was associated with the discharge of several million gallons of highly polluted water from the abandoned Wheal Jane tin mine that also extracted Ag, Cu and Zn ore. Later that year, the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology (CEH; then Institute of Hydrology) Wallingford undertook daily monitoring of the River Carnon for a range of major, minor and trace elements to assess the nature and the dynamics of the pollutant discha…

The federally threatened American crocodile (Crocodylus acutus) is a flagship species and ecological indicator of hydrologic restoration in the Florida Everglades. We conducted a long-term capture-recapture study on the South Florida population of American crocodiles from 1978 to 2015 to evaluate the effects of restoration efforts to more historic hydrologic conditions. The study produced 10,040 crocodile capture events of 9,865 individuals and more than 90% of captures were of hatchlings. Body condition and growth rates of crocodiles were highly age-structured with younger crocodiles presenti

In the Athabasca Oil Sands Region in northeastern Alberta, Canada, oil sands operators are testing the feasibility of peatland construction on the post-mining landscape. In 2009, Syncrude Canada Ltd. began construction of the 52 ha Sandhill Fen pilot watershed, including a 15 ha, hydrologically managed fen peatland built on sand-capped soft oil sands tailings. An integral component of fen reclamation is post-construction monitoring of water quality, including salinity, fluvial carbon, and priority pollutant elements. In this study, the effects of fen reclamation and elevated sulfate levels on

The Tibetan Plateau (TP), known as the Asian Water Tower, supplies water to billions of people but is undergoing rapid warming and wetting. Whether this increased moisture stabilizes the regional hydrological system or merely provides a transient buffer remains unclear. Here we apply an entropy-based framework to quantify the structural organization of the TP's soil moisture system. During 2000-2024, regional wetting has driven a long-term decline in entropy, reflecting an increase in system order and enhanced hydrological buffering capacity. This ordering is modulated by ENSO, which regulates

Climate change is likely to add further pressures to water quality degradation across the globe. The development of robust climate-smart mitigation measures necessitates understanding the impact of extreme hydrological events on catchment hydrology and nutrient losses. Here, empirical modelling (EM) was applied on 14 years of sub-hourly water quality and weather data from six hydrologically diverse agricultural catchments in Ireland to understand the climatic factors that trigger an increase in phosphorus (P) losses [manifested as increase of 0.01 mg L- 1 in total phosphorus (TP) and increase …
