Nodular hyperplasia of the thyroid is a process whereby the gland experiences growth by nodular expansion of thyroid parenchyma. We have encountered 45 patients in whom the process was caused by the growth of well-defined and sharply circumscribed but unencapsulated nodules composed of oncocytic thyroid follicular cells. The lesions arose in 39 women and 6 men, aged 25-69 years (mean = 50.3 years). The surrounding thyroid parenchyma showed features of chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis. The nodules varied from microscopic to 5 cm and appeared to compress the surrounding thyroid parenchyma. Most o…

Pediatric adrenocortical hyperplasias are rare; they usually present with Cushing syndrome (CS); of them, isolated micronodular adrenal disease and its variant, primary pigmented adrenocortical disease are the most commonly encountered. Most cases are due to defects in the cyclic AMP/protein kinase A (cAMP/PKA) pathway, although a few cases remain without an identified genetic defect. Another cause of adrenal hyperplasia in childhood is congenital adrenal hyperplasia, a group of autosomal recessive disorders that affect steroidogenic enzymes in the adrenal cortex. Clinical presentation varies …

In small animal practice, prostatic diseases are increasingly encountered. All dogs may experience prostatic disease, but there should be particular attention to breeding dogs, as prostatic disease may decrease semen quality and fertility. The most common prostatic disease is benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a non-cancerous enlargement of the gland affecting intact adult dogs, part of an aging process, including both an increase in cell numbers (hyperplasia) and in cell size (hypertrophy). Acute and chronic prostatitis, prostatic abscess, prostatic neoplasia and prostate squamous metaplasia…

Bilateral symmetrical fibrous palate hyperplasia is not a common case in the literature. The cause of this pathological change is not completely known. The development of hyperplasia may also be associated with a genetic mutation in the gingival soft tissue or gingival injury. We present a case of a 47-year-old patient who developed a formation that manifested bilaterally in the hard palate. After the excision, there were no histological elements in the material that indicated aggressive behavior of the formation. The clinical and histological diagnosis was the bilateral symmetrical palate hyp…

The advent of new high throughput sequencing technologies has paved the way for microbiome research, opening up entirely new perspectives on the complex and diverse ecosystems of the human body. One of the main findings was that it became clear that in contrast to the widely held dogma the urinary tract is not a sterile environment. As for all niches of the human body, a well-balanced microbiome is an essential part for the physiological functioning of the urinary tract and therefore it must be considered a prerequisite for health. The dysbalance of the microbiome is now seen as having a consi

Five syndromes share predominantly hyperplastic glands with a primary excess of hormones: neonatal severe primary hyperparathyroidism, from … dren with hypertension and hypokalemia. The grouping of these five syndromes highlights predominant hyperplasia as a stable tissue endpoint and as their tissue stage for all of the hormone excess. Comparisons were made among this and two other groups of syndromes, forming a continuum of gland staging: predominant oversecretions express little or no hyperplasi …

Benign smooth muscle cell proliferation commonly involves a variety of body organs, yet is a rare finding in the spermatic cord or paratesticular tissue of the male genital tract. Here we discuss a case of smooth muscle hyperplasia of the epididymis which presented as an intrascrotal mass. This is a very rare condition and should be considered in the differential diagnosis of any paratesticular mass.

Angiolymphoid hyperplasia with eosinophilia (ALHE) is an uncommon dermal angioproliferating tumor, characterized by red to brown papules or nodules on the head and neck, though also occurring in the mouth, trunk, extremities and inguinal area. The palm is a very unusual site for ALHE, and there have been very few cases reported globally thus far. ALHE can be pruritic and painful and histopathologic findings show vascular proliferation with infiltration of eosinophils and lymphocytes in the dermis. Plump endothelial cells protrude into the lumen. We report a case of ALHE occurring at an unusual…

Swelling of the Bartholin gland is most often due to inflammation and/or cysts, whereas solid lesions are rare. The majority of solid lesions are carcinomas and only a few cases of benign solid lesions have been reported in the literature, and these are either nodular hyperplasia or adenoma. In this case report, a woman presented with swelling of the labium majus, and she was clinically thought to have a Bartholin cyst. The lesion was excised, and histological examination revealed nodular hyperplasia of the Bartholin gland.

Two men, aged in their 20s, presented with multiple, soft, rounded papules on the prepuce. The lesions were centrally umbilicated, resembling molluscum contagiosum, but clearly distinct from Tyson's glands. Surface microscopy showed well-defined, milky-white, bag-shaped structures, which under histological examination were found to be sebaceous glands with various features of hyperplasia. A lymphocytic T-cell infiltrate, closely associated with progressive degeneration and destruction of the sebocytes, was visible around the glands. In the differential diagnosis of penile papular lesions, this…

Congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) is a family of autosomal recessive disorders caused by mutations that encode for enzymes involved in one of the various steps of adrenal steroid synthesis. These defects result in the absence or the decreased synthesis of cortisol from its cholesterol precursor. The anterior pituitary secretes excess adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH) via feedback regulation by cortisol, which results in overstimulation of the adrenals and causes hyperplasia. Symptoms due to CAH can vary from mild to severe depending on the degree of ensymatic defect. In the classical form…

The caruncle is an ocular adnexal structure composed of both mucosal and epidermal elements. Consequently, a number of benign and malignant lesions of epithelial and supportive tissues may arise in this area. Lesions of the caruncle are rarely reported, and their appropriate diagnosis and management may be uncertain. One such lesion is sebaceous gland hyperplasia. Of all caruncular lesions that undergo excision, sebaceous gland hyperplasia is infrequently encountered. We have observed four cases of sebaceous gland hyperplasia of the caruncle over the last 2 years. Our observations suggest that…
