The outcome of 103 pregnancies in 64 women with constant hyperprolactinemia was evaluated. Seventy-eight pregnancies had been induced with bromocriptine and 25 occurred without any treatment. In all, 66% of the pregnancies ended in delivery, 17% in miscarriage, 10% in tubal pregnancy and 7% in induced abortion. The authors used Bromocriptine tablet, made by Chemical Works of Gedeon Richter Ltd. in 11 cases to alleriate a physiological milk secretion and in 15 cases as a treatment for extra-puerperal galactorrhea. Six stable psychiatric outpatients with hyperprolactinemia and amenorrhea/oligomenorrhea associated with their neuroleptic medications were treated with bromocriptine. Daily dosages of 5-10 mg corrected the hyperprolactinemia and restored menstruation in four of the six patients. One woman, however, developed worsened psychiatric symptoms while taking bromocriptine, and it was discontinued. We have demonstrated the presence of anti-PRL autoantibody in 5 patients with idiopathic hyperprolactinemia. The clinical features were suggestive of a weak biological activity of PRL, such as regular menses and no galactorrhea. The usage of metergoline in patients with infertility and different forms (hinds) of hyperprolactinaemia was studied for 90 days at a dose of 12 mg. It gives a possibility to stimulate ovulation in 64% of patients and gain pregnancy in 8% of patients. The changes in the maternal prolactin level during pregnancy and puerperium were studied in 14 patients with occulted hyperprolactinemia, 5 patients with functional hyperprolactinemia, and 135 women with normoprolactinemia. Hyperprolactinemia is a major cause of anovulation and female infertility. However, we found 22 hyperprolactinemic patients with preserved ovarian function as assessed by midluteal plasma progesterone levels greater than 7 ng/ml. We performed a gel chromatography on the plasma of six of those patients to study the circulating pattern of prolactin (PRL). Forty women with hyperprolactinemia with and without radiologic evidence of prolactin-secreting pituitary adenoma were prospectively treated with bromocriptine.
