Tending The Garden: What organic youth peer support can teach us about building systems that care.

Youth peer support (YPS) is an evidence-based model of care in which young people with lived experience (YPWLE) provide recovery-oriented support to peers navigating similar challenges. On many college campuses this work already happens informally, without training, compensation, or institutional recognition. This narrative essay examines The Garden, a unit of a student mentor-mentee program at the University of California, San Diego, that organically evolved into de facto YPS, providing students mutual aid spanning acute crisis, identity formation, and navigation of the hidden curriculum of h

A mixed-methods investigation of firearm experiences among sexual and gender minority young adults of color in Detroit.

BACKGROUND: Firearm violence is a pressing public health crisis in the United States and disproportionately impacts sexual and gender minority (SGM) young adults of color who already face systemic inequities. Despite elevated risks of suicidality and violence victimization, firearm violence research rarely focuses on SGM populations. PURPOSE: This study examined firearm experiences among SGM young adults of color in Detroit, MI, to inform trauma-informed care, firearm safety education, and inclusive prevention strategies. METHODS: Using a community-engaged convergent parallel mixed-methods d

Early Mental Recovery After Job Loss: Uncovering Critical Factors Through a Novel Fuzzy Decision-Making Framework.

In corporate life, job loss is a multidimensional crisis that not only threatens individuals' economic security but also profoundly shakes psychological balance, sense of identity, and future expectations. The aim of this study is to identify the factors that most significantly impact the early mental recovery process after job loss in corporate life and to develop an integrated decision-making model to guide decision-makers based on these factors. In this study, a total of 17 criteria are first identified through a literature review. Then, the N-gram technique is used to identify the seven mo

Continuing the Role: Lived Experiences of Family Caregivers after Placement of a Relative With Dementia in Residential Care.

Placement of a relative with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) in residential care is often assumed to reduce caregiver burden. However, little is known about how informal caregivers experience their role after placement. This descriptive phenomenological study explored the lived experiences of 9 informal family caregivers whose relatives with ADRD resided in residential care settings. Semi-structured interviews lasting 60 to 120 minutes were conducted and analyzed using Colaizzi's method to identify the essential structures of post-placement caregiving. Brief quantitative measu

Identification of potential vaccine targets for elicitation of host immune cells against SARS-CoV-2 by reverse vaccinology approach.

The COVID-19 pandemic has emerged as a critical global health crisis, demanding urgent and effective strategies for containment. While some knowledge exists about epitope sequences recognized by human immune cells and their activation of CD8+ T cells within the HLA context, comprehensive information remains limited. This study employs reverse vaccinology to explore antigenic HLA-restricted T-cell epitopes capable of eliciting durable immunity. Screening reveals 187 consensus epitopes, with 23 offering broad population coverage worldwide, spanning over 5000 HLA alleles. Sequence alignment analy

Race-specific associations: inflammatory mediators and chronic low back pain.

Chronic low back pain (cLBP) is a global health crisis that disproportionately burdens non-Hispanic Black (NHB) individuals, compared with those who identify as non-Hispanic White (NHW). Despite the growing personal and societal impact of cLBP, its biological underpinnings remain poorly understood. To elucidate the biological factors that underlie the racial disparities in cLBP, this study sought to determine whether inflammatory mediators associated with pain interference (PI), pain at rest (PAR), and movement-evoked pain (MEP) differ as a function of racial identity. Blood samples were colle

Innovative method for rapid detection of falsified COVID-19 vaccines through unopened vials using handheld Spatially Offset Raman Spectroscopy (SORS).

Preventing, detecting, and responding to substandard and falsified vaccines is of critical importance for ensuring the safety, efficacy, and public trust in vaccines. This is of heightened importance in context of public health crisis, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, in which extreme world-wide shortages of vaccines provided a fertile ground for exploitation by falsifiers. Here, a proof-of-concept study explored the feasibility of using a handheld Spatially Offset Raman Spectroscopy (SORS) device to authenticate COVID-19 vaccines through rapid analysis of unopened vaccine vials. The results sho

Adults Experiencing Homelessness in the US-Mexico Border Region: A Photovoice Project.

Homelessness is a social, economic, and political crisis in the United States. In particular, the US-Mexico Border region has seen a surge of homelessness, specifically among veterans, women victims of intimate partner violence, and immigrants. In 2014, 12 persons in El Paso, TX, with experience of being homeless used the photovoice methodology to participate in a project titled, "The Voices and Images of the Residents of the Opportunity Center for the Homeless: A Visual Project on the Identity and Challenges Homeless Adults Face on the Border Region." The project was led by faculty from the D

[Delayed identity development, family relationships and psychopathology: Links between healthy and clinically disturbed youth].

This study compared three groups of various age and health status (total N = 732) with respect to their identity status, stress level, and parental behavior. As expected, patients were characterized by delayed identity development, particularly ruminative exploration. Further, patients experienced high identity stress and described high levels of anxious paternal rearing and intrusive maternal psychological control. The patients‘ levels of both internalizing and externalizing symptomatology were high, and the impact of externalizing symptoms on identity arrest was strong. Identity status was d

Envisioning a Humane and Accessible US Methadone Treatment System: Generating Policy and Practice Recommendations From the Liberate Methadone Movement.

Methadone treatment (MT) for opioid use disorder saves lives, but the US MT system has long been dominated by punitive policies and practices that make MT inaccessible, burdensome, and traumatic for patients. After generations without changes to methadone regulations, a confluence of circumstance-including the COVID-19 pandemic and an overdose crisis that has taken over a million lives-has begun to shift the MT advocacy and political landscape. This commentary describes the building of the "Liberate Methadone" movement; a grassroots effort led by people with lived and living experience with me

Identification and Elimination of Antifungal Tolerance in Candida auris.

Antimicrobial resistance is a global health crisis to which pathogenic fungi make a substantial contribution. The human fungal pathogen C. auris is of particular concern due to its rapid spread across the world and its evolution of multidrug resistance. Fluconazole failure in C. auris has been recently attributed to antifungal "tolerance". Tolerance is a phenomenon whereby a slow-growing subpopulation of tolerant cells, which are genetically identical to susceptible cells, emerges during drug treatment. We use microbroth dilution and disk diffusion assays, together with image analysis, to inve

[Results and current indications of bone marrow allograft in sickle cell disease].

Since 1988, 34 pediatric patients with severe sickle cell disease have received bone marrow transplantation (BMT) from HLA-identical siblings in France. After 1992, documentation of the favorable effect of hydroxyurea therapy on the frequency of vasoocclusive crisis (VOC) left a history of stroke (n = 16) as the main indication for BMT. Among patients treated by genoidentical BMT, 85% were cured and 9% died. All deaths were due to severe graft-versus-host disease. The rejection rate fell from 25% to 5% after addition of ATG to the conditioning regimen. BMT reversed some sickle cell disease-rel

Monoclonal antibody M195: a diagnostic marker for acute myelogenous leukemia.

Monoclonal antibody (mAb) M195 is a mouse IgG2a reactive with a myelomonocytic differentiation antigen found on early myeloid cells and monocytes. The reactivity of M195 with fresh hematopoietic neoplasms in the blood or bone marrow from 227 patients at Memorial Hospital was determined by flow cytometry. M195 was positive on 67% of 61 myeloblastic leukemias. Seventy percent of Tdt-negative ANLL and 30% of Tdt-positive ANLL were positive; 100% of CMMOL and 100% of CML in myeloblastic crisis or accelerated phase were positive. In contrast, M195 was positive on only 8% of 51 lymphoblastic leukemi

[Psychological adaptation in coronary patients].

Summarizing some essential results from empirical investigations about the individual adaptation and coping with coronary heart diseases five principles are formulated: It ist not possible to predict the individual reactions to a coronary disease from the knowledge of the pathophysiological aspects. The behaviour pattern of these patients are different and complex determined. The individual reactions to the outbreak of the disease equally depend on familial, occupational, social and public health care factors on one side and on intrapsychical factors of the patient on the other side (i.e. pers

[Clinical and electrophysiological peculiarities of seronegative myasthenia].

Thirty-seven patients with myasthenia gravis (MG) underwent AChR-Ab analysis, clinical study and neurophysiological examination - repetitive nerve stimulation (RNS). About 16,2% of MG patients who were anti-AChR-negative constituted a so-called seronegative MG group (SNMG). Compared to the AChR-Ab positive patients (SPMG), the SNMG was characterized by the higher female/male ratio (6:1), higher frequency of infantile onset of MG (33,3%), absence of association with thymoma and highest frequency of myasthenic crisis (83,3%). The clinical pattern of SNMG differed from SPMG and was characterized
