Alternatives to incarceration for parents: a scoping review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: The USA has the highest incarceration rate in the world, with 1 in 48 adults under correctional supervision. Approximately half of state and federal prisoners are parents, nearly 80% of women in jails are mothers, and an estimated 1 in 14 children have had an incarcerated parent. Incarceration increases the risk of physical and mental health issues, family strain and disconnection and housing and employment instability. Children of incarcerated parents are particularly vulnerable to health problems, behavioural issues and academic struggles. Given these impacts, there is growing …

Diabetes in the context of incarceration: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: The burden of chronic conditions, like diabetes, is disproportionately carried by people facing social disadvantages (e.g., those with experiences of incarceration). A dearth of knowledge remains about this topic. We conducted a scoping review to determine the extent of literature about diabetes management and/or self-management in relation to incarceration. METHODS: We used the Arksey and O'Malley five stage process, recommendations by Levac et al., and the PRISMA Extension for Scoping Reviews Checklist. Core search terms for diabetes were combined using the Boolean operator AND …

Prevalence of dementia and mild cognitive impairment before incarceration.

BACKGROUND: Accumulating evidence indicates that behaviors in Alzheimer's disease and related dementias could result in incarceration. Yet, the proportion of persons diagnosed with dementia and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) before they were incarcerated is largely unknown. By leveraging a national sample of mid- to late-life adults who were incarcerated, we determined the prevalence of dementia and MCI before their incarceration. METHODS: In this current study, participants were Medicare-eligible U.S. veterans who transitioned from incarceration to the community in mid- to late-life from Oc…

Incarceration of small bowel following percutaneous nephrostomy tube insertion.

Percutaneous nephrostomy has become a well-established technique for providing permanent or temporary drainage of an obstructed urinary system for decades. Although it is generally considered a safe intervention, some complications might be life threatening. Here we present a case of bilateral nephrostomy insertion due to T-cell lymphoma, that presented with signs of bowel obstruction 3 weeks after intervention. Abdominal exploration showed bowel obstruction due to invagination of bowel loop between left nephrostomy tube and abdominal wall which resolved by release of bowel loop and changing n

The contingent effect of incarceration on state health outcomes.

INTRODUCTION: This study examines how growth in the population of former prisoners affects rates of communicable diseases such as tuberculosis, syphilis, chlamydia, and HIV. METHODS: We estimate state-level fixed effects count models showing how the former prisoner population affected communicable disease in U.S. states from 1987 to 2010, a period of dramatic growth in incarceration. RESULTS: We find contingent effects, based on how specific diseases are recognized, tested, and treated in prisons. The rate of former prisoners increases diseases that are poorly addressed in the prison health …

Undoing resilience: immigrant status and poor health following incarceration.

BACKGROUND: In the United States, foreign-born persons often have better health outcomes than their native-born peers, despite exposure to adversity. Nevertheless, it is unclear whether this pattern extends to the consequences of life events, such as incarceration, that separate immigrants from their supportive networks and increase exposure to adversity. Accordingly, using four waves of data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health, hierarchical generalized linear models were used to examine within-individual changes in self-rated health following first incarceration…

Eliminating Gaps in Medicaid Coverage During Reentry After Incarceration.

This commentary explores the health and social challenges associated with gaps in Medicaid health insurance coverage for adults and youths exiting the US criminal justice system, and highlights some potential solutions.Because a high proportion of recently incarcerated people come from low-income backgrounds and experience a high burden of disease, the Medicaid program plays an important role in ensuring access to care for this population. However, the Medicaid Inmate Exclusion Policy, or "inmate exclusion," leads to Medicaid being terminated or suspended upon incarceration, often resulting in…

The Disciplining Effect of Mass Incarceration on Labor Organization.

Previous research has described the criminal justice system as a "labor market institution." In recent years, however, research on the relat … evidence that this relationship results from employers' increased power over those so exposed. Mass incarceration may discipline low-wage workers by decreasing their likelihood of participating in organizations through which they might gain economic power individually and collectively.

Trans-incarceration: Reimagining confinement and the criminality of aging.

As the U.S. population continues to age and will require increasing levels of care, scholars continue to question what conventional methods of "custodial care" and rehabilitation accomplish for the individuals receiving them, relative to those providing them. To this end, critical discourse surrounding the spatial institutionalization of older adults argues that formal institutions of care and rehabilitation are simply alternative and synonymous forms of incarceration and imprisonment. Using semi-structured interviews with ten male residents of a Rhode Island nursing home and ten incarcerated …

[Jail incarceration, social sanitary confinement and ways of escape].

Jail incarceration and social confinement due to a sanitary stay-at-home law against the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic are compared to the introduction of dance workshops for imprisoned women charged with long sentences, then followed by an outside performance Soul Kitchen. The whole experience, organized by a famous contemporary choreographer Angelin Preljocaj, is filmed by Valérie Müller, producing Danser sa peine (To dance her sentence/her sorrow), nominated for an award. The sessions are planned: two hours and a half, 2 times a week, for four months, no technique required. A group of five wome…

Underutilization of HIV Testing Among Men with Incarceration Histories.

Annual HIV testing is recommended for individuals at high risk of infection, specifically incarcerated populations. Incarcerated men carry a higher lifetime risk of acquiring HIV than the general population, yet little is known about their HIV testing behaviors. We collected Audio Computer Assisted Self Interview data for 819 men entering a state prison in North Carolina. We assessed correlates of previous HIV testing, including stigmatizing attitudes and beliefs, and explored two outcomes: (1) ever HIV tested before current incarceration, and (2) recency of last HIV test. Eighty percent had b…

Chronic medical conditions in U.S. adults with incarceration history.

OBJECTIVES: To examine the associations between incarceration history and chronic medical conditions in a nationally representative sample of U.S. adults and whether risk for chronic medical conditions differ by sex and race among those with incarceration history. METHOD: The data were from the 2012-2013 National Survey of Alcohol and Related Conditions III (N = 36,133). Multiple logistic regression was used to compare odds of a self-reported diagnosis for 24 chronic medical conditions by incarceration history, as well as by sex and race within those with incarceration history. RESULTS: 12.4…

Major Mental Illness as a Risk Factor for Incarceration.

OBJECTIVE: Individuals with serious mental illness are overrepresented in correctional populations. However, little is known about the representation of persons with serious mental illness at earlier stages in the criminal justice process. This research sought to measure the prevalence of arrestees in New York State who were treated for a major mental illness in the year before their arrest and to assess whether these individuals had a disproportionate rate of incarceration. METHODS: Approximately 600,000 individuals arrested in New York State between January 1, 2010, and December 31, 2013, w…

Maternal Incarceration and the Transformation of Urban Family Life.

Incarceration intensely alters the family lives of incarcerated men and the women and children connected to them. Yet women increasingly spend time behind bars and, accordingly, they absorb direct consequences of incarceration in addition to the more commonly considered spillover consequences of men's incarceration on families. In this article, we draw on the stress process perspective to examine the consequences of maternal incarceration for three broad aspects of family life: romantic relationships, parenting, and economic wellbeing. Data from the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study (…
